Perfect Hubby, Perfect Stranger

Chapter 2

Deloria's POV

At 10:30 AM, I was sitting in a café not far from the jewelry store where I worked.

I didn't expect Daphne to be so efficient. She called me less than half an hour after I spoke to her.

She told me that her friend agreed to meet me today.

I rubbed the coffee cup with my fingers. It sounded like Daphne's friend was eager to get married, which made me feel a bit nervous.

Soon, the empty café echoed with a creak.

I looked up and saw a well-dressed man come in. He was wearing a vintage striped shirt and casual trousers. A classic British style.

I watched as he stepped in and walked toward my seat.

Finally, he sat down across from me.

I gazed at him in a daze. I didn't expect he would be so handsome.

With impeccable features and eyes like the ocean, he exuded an innate nobility.

Was he the man that Daphne wanted to set me up with?

How could a man like him be unable to find a wife?

"Miss, are you just gonna keep staring at me?" he said as he looked at me with a smile.

Hearing his voice as deep as a cello, I realized that I had been gazing at him for a long time. My face couldn't help burning.

I immediately said, "Sorry... um, hello, I'm Deloria."

'Oh my god, why am I stuttering?' I was a bit frustrated.

"I know, Deloria. I'm Gerald," he smiled again.

His voice was intoxicating, or why was I feeling drunk?

I thought, 'Wait, Daphne told me what her friend's name was. I can't believe I forgot it."

I looked at his handsome face and blurted out, "Gerald, when are we getting married?"

A look of surprise came over Gerald's face, and then he chuckled.

"Are you in such a hurry? We've just met."

Realizing what I had just said, I sipped at my coffee with embarrassment.

After taking a few deep breaths, I managed to calm myself down.

I looked at Gerald and said, "I guess Daphne has already told you about me. Let me introduce myself again. I am Deloria Higgins, and I live with my mother, Maeve. I work at a jewelry store, but my income is not high. So I can't afford a house in Los Angeles yet. Oh, by the way, I used to be in a relationship, but I've been single for a long time now. There is one more thing you should know in advance. I lost some of my memories, but I'm perfectly healthy. If you don't trust me, I'll go to the hospital with you for a check-up."

After speaking, I looked at Gerald, quietly observing his reaction.

"You're so frank." Gerald paused. Then he continued, "Aren't you afraid that I might have ulterior motives? Or I might use the information you told me to harm you?"

I breathed a sigh of relief when I noticed that Gerald didn't show any signs of disgust. "I'm here cuz I wanna get married. Of course I needa be honest with you," I continued. "I don't want you to feel deceived."

After pondering for a while, Gerald looked at me and said, "My name is Gerald Locksley. I rented an apartment here in LA, and I also got a car. My income is stable. Currently, I'm single and in good health."

He paused for a few seconds and went on, "I can get married anytime."

Hearing his words, I felt my face heat up again.

I bowed my head slightly and whispered, "Don't worry, though my income isn't high, I can support myself. So I won't spend your money. I only have one request. I hope I can live with my mother after marriage. Don't worry, I'll pay part of the rent."

"Not a problem. My apartment has enough rooms for you and your mother."

Gerald casually tapped his index finger on the back of his hand. It seemed he was pondering over my words.

Suddenly, he asked, "Do you really wanna marry me? I gotta tell you that marrying me may not improve your quality of life. You may still struggle to make ends meet."

I looked up at Gerald and guessed his bluntness was probably the reason why he couldn't get himself a wife.

I replied with a smile, "It's fine. We can go Dutch after we get married. I'm sure life'll be better as long as both of us work hard."

Gerald nodded, put down the cup, and stood up. He was tall and muscular, just like a model.

Through snug shirt, I could vaguely see his perfect abs.

Gerald lifted his left hand to check his watch and said, "Let's go. If we head to the county clerk's office now, we can get our marriage license today."
