Evelyn pov

I woke up that morning expecting nothing unusual. The same ceiling, the same quiet room, the same routine waiting for me. For a brief moment, I lay still, staring upward, letting the calm fool me into thinking my life was still in place, then I pushed the covers aside and got up.

Everything felt ordinary. I showered, dressed up and stood in front of the mirror longer than I should have. I adjusted my blouse, smoothed my hair, and studied my face like I was trying to convince myself I was ready for something bigger. Today mattered cause it was my first day going out to look for a job cause I needed it.

Not just for money, but for independence and control over a life that never truly felt like mine.

I picked up my bag and stepped out, locking the door behind me. The morning air was cool, brushing gently against my skin as I told myself to stay focused while maintaining one step at a time.

My phone rang before I even reached the end of the street.

I glanced at the screen,Amara.

I answered without thinking. “Hey, I’m heading out now. Wish me luck.”

There was no immediate response; Just silence. The kind that feels heavy before something bad is said.

“Evelyn… where are you exactly?” Her voice sounded tight.

“I just left home. Why?”

Another pause. I could hear her breathing.

“I just saw your fiancé.”

My steps slowed. “Okay… and?”

“He’s not alone.”

I frowned slightly, more confused than concerned. “Amara, what are you talking about?”

“He’s with your mom.”

Everything inside me stilled.

“That doesn’t make sense,” I said, my tone flat. “Why would he be with her?”

“I don’t know, but they’re at a café on Adeline Street. And Evelyn… it doesn’t look normal.”

I let out a small breath, trying to steady myself. “What do you mean not normal?”

“They’re close like the closeness is too close. I think you should come.”

For a moment, I wanted to laugh it off, I wanted to tell her she was imagining things. But something deep inside me twisted, sharp and unsettling.

“Send me the location.”

She did.

I didn’t think about it, I just moved.

The ride felt longer than it should have. My thoughts kept spinning, searching for explanations that made sense, maybe it was a coincidence, maybe my mom ran into him, maybe there was a reason.

I held onto those maybes like they could save me.

When I arrived, I spotted them almost immediately

They were standing outside the café.

And everything inside me went into a slow pause.

They stood too close, hand rested at her waist like it belonged there, like it had always been there. They were smiling, talking in low voices I could not hear.

Then he leaned in.

And kissed her.

My breath caught.

It was not quick nor was it accidental. It was deliberately Intimate.

My fiancé kissed my mother.

For a second, the world felt distant, like I was watching someone else’s life fall apart. Then reality crashed in, heavy and unforgiving.

I walked toward them before I could stop myself.

“What is going on?”

My voice sounded strange, like it did not belong to me.

They both turned.

He looked startled, almost guilty. My mother did not look surprised at all.

“Evelyn,” he said, stepping forward, “I can explain.”

“Explain what?” My voice rose despite myself.

“Explain why you just kissed my mother?”

He hesitated, searching for words that never came.

Before he could speak, she stepped forward.

“Are you really going to do this here?” she asked, her tone calm, almost bored.

I stared at her. “Do what?”

“Create a scene.”

My chest tightened. “A scene? What I just saw is not normal.”

She sighed like I was exhausting her. “You are overreacting.”

“Overreacting?” I repeated, disbelief creeping into my voice. “That is my fiancé.”

“No,” she said, her expression sharpening, “he is not.”

Silence pressed down around us.

I shook my head slowly. “What are you saying mom?”

She looked directly at me, her gaze cold. “He is with me now.”

The words did not register at first.

“With you?” I echoed.

“Yes.”

I turned to him, hoping for denial, for something to prove this was not real. “Tell me she is lying.”

He looked away.

That hurt more than anything else.

A hollow feeling spread through me, swallowing every emotion until I felt numb.

“You cannot be serious,” I said quietly.

She shrugged. “Things change.”

“Not like this,” I said. “Not like this.”

She did not respond. Instead, she turned, slipping her arm through his.

He went with her.

Just like that.

No apology nor explanation. Nothing.

I stood there long after they disappeared, trying to understand how everything could fall apart so quickly.

But the day kept moving, whether I was ready or not.

I forced myself to continue with my plans, I had interviews lined up and I could not afford to waste any for some piss of shit.

I walked into offices with a composed face, answered questions, handed over my resume. I tried to sound confident, tried to act like nothing had happened.

But my mind kept drifting, every question felt distant, every rejection felt heavier than it should have.

By the end of the day, I had nothing.

No job nor progress.

Just exhaustion.

With nowhere else to go, I decided to stop by school. Maybe I could at least focus on that. Maybe something in my life was still stable.

I was wrong.

“You cannot attend classes,” the administrator said, barely looking at me. “Your fees have not been paid.”

“I will pay soon,” I said quickly. “I just need some time.”

He shook his head. “Until then, you are not allowed to continue.”

I felt the tears before I could stop them.

My mom didn’t care, it’s not like she doesn’t have it, unfortunately for me she is my biological mother, yet she keeps taking any man I get with her money and trying to ruin my life.

“I am trying,” I whispered.

He did not respond.

There was nothing left to say.

I left the office with blurred vision, my chest tight, my thoughts scattered. Everything I depended on was slipping away, one piece at a time.

By the time I got home, I felt empty.

I pushed the door open slowly, expecting silence.

Instead, I heard laughter.

Familiar voices.

My heart dropped.

I stepped inside, my movements slow and cautious. Something told me I already knew what I was about to see.

And I did.

They were in the living room.

On the couch.

Close, intimately close.

He had his hand on her, she was leaning into him, smiling like nothing was wrong.

Like this was normal and Like I did not exist.

The sight hit harder than before, it was not just betrayal now but replacement.

This was my home.

And yet, I felt like a stranger.

Neither of them noticed me at first.

I stood there, watching, my hands trembling at my sides.

Everything inside me screamed, but no sound came out.

Then he looked up.

Our eyes met.

For a moment, something flickered in his expression. Guilt and maybe regret, I could not tell.

She followed his gaze and saw me.

There was no shame in her eyes.

Only irritation

“Why are you standing there?” she asked.

I could not answer.

Because in that moment, I understood something clearly.

I had lost everything.

And the worst part was not that it happened.

It was that they did not care at all, like not even a little.
