THE CREATURE OF HABIT

Eighteen Years Ago

The little girl sat alone on a hospital bed, clutching a worn-out stuffed rabbit.

She was only three years old.

Beyond the glass wall, scientists watched her every movement. Machines beeped around her, displaying strange readings that none of them could fully explain.

“Subject Seven is awake,” a scientist announced.

A woman in a white coat entered the room. Dr. Elena Marlowe had worked at the Moonshadow Research Facility for years, but something about this little girl had always troubled her.

“Good morning, Tina,” Elena said gently.

Tina looked up at her. “Are you staying with me today?”

Elena hesitated before smiling. “Of course, sweetheart.”

Tina held out her rabbit. “He’s scared.”

“Then we’ll keep him safe,” Elena promised.

Behind the observation glass, a monitor suddenly flickered. The readings spiked before returning to normal.

One scientist frowned. “That’s impossible.”

Elena glanced at the screen.

For a fraction of a second, Tina’s eyes changed colour.

Then everything returned to normal.

Nobody understood what had happened.

Nobody except the thing sleeping deep inside the little girl.

And it was beginning to wake.

⸻

Present Day

Eighteen years later.

The world was dying.

Cities burned beneath smoke-filled skies. Abandoned cars littered the roads, their windows shattered and their doors hanging open. Blood stained the pavements, and distant screams echoed through the ruins.

The infection had spread faster than anyone could have imagined.

At first, people thought it was a disease. Then the dead began to rise.

But the zombies were only the beginning.

Something far worse had arrived.

Inside the ruins of a city, John ran through the streets with his wife, gripping her hand as they raced toward a train station.

“Keep moving!” he shouted.

They were almost there when a creature lunged from between two abandoned cars.

His wife screamed.

The creature bit her arm.

John shot it repeatedly until it collapsed, then pulled his wife away.

“No. No, no, no.” He pressed his hands against her wound. “You’re going to be fine. Do you hear me?”

She looked at him with frightened eyes.

“John…”

“Save your strength. We’re getting to that train.”

She shook her head. The infection was already spreading beneath her skin.

Tears filled her eyes as she held his face.

“You have to go.”

“I’m not leaving you!”

“You have to live.”

John stared at her, unable to accept what was happening.

She kissed him one last time.

Then she pushed him toward the station.

He ran because she had asked him to.

But as the train pulled away, he looked back and saw the woman he loved disappearing into the smoke.

That day, something inside John died with her.

He would never again allow himself to love anyone enough to lose them.

⸻

The Enemy

Far beyond the ruined city, inside a dark chamber, a figure stood before a wall of screens.

Images of burning buildings and fleeing survivors flickered across them.

A creature knelt in the shadows.

“We have searched the facilities,” it rasped. “The girl is missing.”

The figure slowly turned.

Its face was hidden, but its eyes glowed with an unnatural light.

“Missing?” it repeated.

The creature lowered its head.

“The laboratory has fallen. We found no body.”

Silence filled the chamber.

Then the figure stepped forward.

“Find her.”

“And if she resists?”

The figure’s expression darkened.

“Bring me La Luna.”

The creature trembled.

The figure looked toward the distant city.

“She must not awaken. If she remembers what she is, everything we have built will burn.”

⸻

The Fall of Moonshadow

Alarms screamed throughout the Moonshadow Research Facility.

Tina, now eighteen, stumbled through a corridor in a thin hospital gown. Her bare feet slapped against the cold floor.

She had spent her entire life inside these walls.

She had never seen the ocean, walked through a park, or watched the sun rise without glass separating her from the world.

She had endured countless experiments. Needles, strange medicines, endless questions.

And always the same question.

What is inside you?

Tina never had an answer.

She only knew something lived within her.

Something powerful.

Something dangerous.

“Dr. Marlowe!” Tina shouted as she reached the laboratory entrance.

Elena appeared through the smoke, carrying a security card.

“Tina! Thank goodness.”

“What’s happening?”

Elena grabbed her hand. “The facility has been breached. We have to leave now.”

A deafening crash shook the building.

Something screamed beyond the corridor.

Tina froze.

Elena tightened her grip. “Don’t look back.”

They ran toward an emergency exit as the lights flickered overhead. Behind them, creatures tore through the facility, slaughtering anyone who stood in their path.

At the exit, Elena opened the door and pushed Tina outside.

“Come with me!” Tina pleaded.

Elena looked at her, tears shining in her eyes.

“I can’t.”

“No! Please!”

Elena held Tina’s face between her hands.

For the first time, Tina saw her scientist’s expression disappear, replaced by the face of a frightened mother.

“Listen to me, sweetheart.” Elena’s voice trembled. “Only you can end this.”

Before Tina could ask what she meant, Elena pushed the door shut.

Tina pounded against it.

“ELENA!”

A scream came from the other side.

Then silence.

Tina stumbled backward, tears streaming down her face.

She was alone.

⸻

The Awakening

Tina ran through the ruined streets, not knowing where to go.

A low growl sounded behind her.

She turned.

A slimy creature crouched beneath a broken streetlight. It had four powerful limbs, long claws, and a mouth filled with jagged teeth. Its strange eyes resembled rows of smaller teeth.

It stared at her.

Then it charged.

Tina screamed and ran, but the creature was faster.

It leapt onto her, driving its claws into the left side of her waist.

Pain exploded through her body.

“GET OFF ME!”

The creature snarled, pressing her into the ground.

Tina struggled, but blood spread across her gown. Her strength was fading.

Then something inside her stirred.

A whisper echoed through her mind.

Let me out.

“No,” she gasped.

The creature raised its claws.

Let me out.

Tina’s heart hammered against her chest.

“I don’t want to hurt anyone!”

The creature lunged.

And Tina disappeared.

Her skin turned ocean blue. Her eyes transformed, their whites becoming deep blue while her pupils shimmered with impossible rainbow colours. Sharp fangs emerged from her mouth, and long talons extended from her fingers.

The creature recoiled.

For the first time, the hunter was afraid.

Tina rose slowly.

She seized the creature’s claw and drove her talons into it. With a violent twist, she tore the limb apart.

The creature shrieked.

Tina attacked again, moving with terrifying speed. Her talons ripped through its body until it collapsed in a heap of slime and blood.

The street fell silent.

Then Tina dropped to her knees.

Her skin returned to its normal brown colour. Her eyes became ordinary again, and her talons vanished.

She pressed both hands against the wound in her waist.

“Please,” she whispered. “Not again.”

The pain overwhelmed her.

She dragged herself toward a nearby abandoned supermarket, leaving a trail of blood behind her.

Inside, she crawled between two aisles and curled into a ball.

She was exhausted, terrified, and alone.

And whatever had taken control of her was silent once more.

⸻

The Stranger

John entered the supermarket with a rifle in his hands.

He moved carefully between the shelves, collecting canned food and bottled water. He had learned never to trust silence.

A faint noise came from the next aisle.

He raised his rifle.

Then he saw her.

A young woman lay on the floor in a hospital gown, her hands covered in blood. She was barely conscious.

John stared at her.

“Another survivor,” he muttered.

Tina opened her eyes weakly.

“Please…”

For a moment, John remembered his wife.

He pushed the memory away.

He couldn’t save everyone. He had learned that lesson the hardest way possible.

He turned and walked toward the exit.

Behind Tina, something scraped against the floor.

A zombie emerged from the shadows.

Its cloudy eyes fixed on her.

Tina tried to crawl away, but she had no strength left.

The zombie lurched closer, reaching for her.

Outside, John stopped.

He didn’t know why.

Something pulled at him—a strange, inexplicable feeling that made his chest tighten.

He looked toward the supermarket.

“Damn it.”

He turned around and ran back inside.

The zombie raised its hand to strike.

A gunshot shattered the silence.

The zombie fell inches from Tina’s face.

John stood over it, rifle raised, breathing heavily.

Tina stared up at him.

“Why… did you come back?”

John lowered his weapon.

“Don’t make me regret it.”

He knelt beside her and examined the wound at her waist.

“This is bad.”

Tina tried to sit up, but cried out in pain.

“Stay still,” he ordered.

He tore a strip of cloth from a nearby shirt and pressed it against her wound.

Tina flinched.

“Sorry,” he muttered, his voice unexpectedly gentle.

She studied his face. There was pain behind his cold eyes, a sadness he tried desperately to hide.

“What’s your name?” she whispered.

“John.”

“Tina.”

He nodded, then glanced toward the shattered windows.

“We need to move before more of them arrive.”

Tina reached for his sleeve.

“Please don’t leave me.”

John looked down at her hand.

For a moment, he saw his wife again.

He swallowed hard.

“I’m not leaving you here.”

He lifted Tina carefully into his arms and carried her toward the back exit.

Neither of them noticed the shadow watching from the rooftop across the street.

Its eyes glowed in the darkness.

It had found her.

Far away, the figure in the dark chamber smiled.

“She’s alive.”

It rose from its throne.

“Bring me La Luna.”

A monstrous roar shook the chamber.

The hunt had begun.

And deep inside Tina, the Creature of Habit opened its eyes……
