CHAPTER 1: REJECTED UNDER MOONLIGHT

"Alpha Julian is... delayed," the Ravencrest Pack priest mumbled, shifting his weight, looking at the Moon, his voice dripping with uncertainty. “Time is running out.”

Naomi took a deep breath, her hands trembling as she adjusted the strap of her dress.

The Super Full Moon hung heavy and bruised in the sky, casting a silvery, almost unnatural glow over the Ravencrest pack grounds. The air was thick with the scent of pine, damp earth, and the nervous, buzzing energy of hundreds of wolves. They were packed in tight, whispering, their eyes darting toward the altar where Naomi Hardin stood alone.

Naomi knew what they were saying. Even without a wolf, her hearing was sharp enough to pick up every cruel word. She stood tall in a custom cream-colored gown that hugged her curves in all the right places. The silk was liquid-smooth, draping over her hips and cascading to the floor like spilled moonlight. It was a dress meant for a queen, or at least a Luna, but right now, it felt like a shroud.

She checked her watch again. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic, trapped bird.

Nine times.

Nine times they had set this date. Nine times she had stood here, waiting for Julian Ravencrest, the Alpha of the most powerful pack in the state. And nine times, he’d stood her up. This was it—the last Super Full Moon of the season. If they didn't get the blessing tonight to register their bond with the Werewolf Council, the window would slam shut forever.

"Look at her," a voice sneered from the crowd. It was one of the pack’s elite she-wolves, a girl named Sarah. "Still acting like she’s gonna be Luna. She must be delusional to think Julian would mark a wolf less Omega like her."

"Probably thinks the moon is gonna give her a personality," another voice laughed. "Poor thing. She’s obsessed."

“She’s a charity case,” the mockery went on. “A wolfless nothing. She’s lucky Julian even lets her breathe the same air.” And they kept at it for so long Naomi's head threatened to explode.

She bit the inside of her cheek until she tasted copper, trying to stop herself from lashing back at her mockers. Hold it together, Naomi. She wasn't just some charity case. She was a woman who had spent five years bending, breaking, and rebuilding herself for a man who seemed to view her as an inconvenience. She was a medical prodigy hiding in the shadows of the pack clinic, secretly saving lives while they called her pathetic.

Naomi took a deep breath, her hands trembling as she adjusted the strap of her dress. She refused to let them see her break. She focused on the heavy, silver-white moon, telling herself that Julian will definitely show up.

An hour crawled by. The murmurs turned into a roar of hushed insults. Just as the priest cleared his throat to announce the cancellation, the heavy oak doors at the back of the clearing creaked open.

Julian stepped out. He looked every bit the Alpha—broad-shouldered, lethal, and devastatingly handsome. But he wasn't alone.

Clinging to his arm, looking like a guilty secret she had been waiting to spill, was Priya Kade. Priya was Julian's god-sister, in every sense but blood. She was wearing a dress that looked suspiciously like a wedding gown, her face glowing with a smug, sickly sweetness.

Naomi’s breath hitched. She walked toward them, her heels clicking sharply against the stone. She didn't stop until she was inches from Julian, ignoring the way the air in the clearing suddenly went dead silent.

"Julian," Naomi said, her voice steady, despite the way her world was tilting on its axis. "What took you so long? We’re an hour late. The Council delegates are already restless."

Julian didn't look her in the eye. He looked at the trees. "Naomi."

"And why is Priya here?" Naomi asked, her gaze flicking to the woman clutching his bicep like a lifeline. "This is our marking ceremony, Julian. Not a family dinner."

Julian finally heaved a sigh, a heavy, tired sound that made Naomi’s stomach drop through the floor. He squeezed Priya’s hand.

"There’s something I need to tell you," he said.

"Say it," Naomi commanded. Her voice didn't shake. She could feel the stares of a thousand wolves burning into her back.

Julian didn't answer right away.

Something moved behind his eyes that Naomi had never seen there before. It wasn't guilt, not quite. It was heavier than that. Slower. Like a man standing at the edge of something he couldn't uninitiate.

Julian stepped closer. The distance between them had never once felt this vast.

He slid his hands into his suit pockets, a gesture she'd seen him make a hundred times before difficult board announcements, before deciding on how best to settle territory disputes, before anything he needed to say and didn't want to. "Priya is pregnant, Naomi."

Naomi frowned. “Pregnant? What has that got to do with us?”

Julian heaved another sigh. “I'm responsible for her pregnancy. The pup in her womb is mine.”

The words hit her like a physical blow. She staggered back, the silk of her dress rustling loudly in the silence. She felt like she’d been blindsided by a freight train.

"What... what did you just say?" she whispered.

Julian stepped closer, his hand reaching out instinctively, but he pulled it back before he touched her. "Look, I’m sorry, okay? I didn't mean for it to happen this way. But the deed is done. For this ceremony to go on, for the pack to stay unified, you have to accept Priya. And the pup."

He said it so casually. As if he were asking her to share a dessert, not her life. He expected the usual Naomi—the one who has always done everything to please him, the one who would swallow her pride to keep the peace.

He was so, so wrong.

Naomi looked at him—at the man she had sacrificed five years for. She thought of the late nights in the infirmary, the times she’d secretly stitched up his soldiers, not asking for anything in return, the time she had taken a bullet for him and almost lost her own life. All these years, she’d kept her mouth shut while they called her names, all because she thought he was her destiny.

Her hand moved faster than thought. SMACK.

The sound of her palm connecting with his jaw echoed like a gunshot across the clearing. The pack gasped. Priya shrieked, clutching her stomach. Julian stood there, his head snapped to the side, stunned.

Naomi didn't stop. She stepped closer. “How long…how long have you been sleeping with her?”

“Naomi, please calm down.” Julian tried to take her hand but Naomi flinched, stepping away from him. “Don't touch me.”

Before Julian could say another word, she reached up to her neck, unclasped the heavy, diamond-encrusted engagement ring—the symbol of a promise that had been hollow from the start—and let it drop into the dirt. It hit the ground with a soft thud.

"Consider that your severance pay," she said, her voice cutting through the silence like a razor.

"Naomi, don't you dare—" Julian started, his Alpha aura flaring, trying to force her into submission.

"I, Naomi Hardin," she announced, her voice projected clearly, cold and absolute, "hereby reject the bond between myself and Alpha Julian Ravencrest. I choose myself."

A collective cry of shock erupted from the crowd. Severing a mate bond was supposed to be a death sentence for a wolf less Omega. The physical pain of the rupture usually caused a wolfless Omega’s heart to seize, their veins to freeze. The sheer agony was legendary.

Naomi felt the snap—a white-hot bolt of lightning tearing through her chest. Her vision blurred. Her lungs burned as if she’d inhaled molten lead.

But she didn't fall.

Within a moment, she blinked, her body steadying. She felt a strange, cold fire circulating through her blood—something that wasn't a wolf, something she couldn't explain. She stood perfectly still, her head held high, her back straight as a blade as she turned and walked towards the exit, the train of her gown dragging through the dirt.
