My name is Ahulani, second daughter of King Haku and Queen Alani of the Kalama Kingdom. I go to DarkWood High School, where I am the captain of the cheer team and the most popular girl in school. Do I like being the center of attention? Not really, but I got used to it and just learned to accept it. My sister, Lily, used to go here, she graduated last year and is now in college and has her own place.
We are the first from generations of royal mermaids to not only go to a school for both humans and all mythical creatures, but to also go to college. Lily is the spitting image of our father, with waist length black hair that falls in perfect waves and eyes the color of pink coral. When she's in her mermaid form, her tail is a sparkly purple with pink hues.
I am the spitting image of our mother. My moon silver hair falls in loose curls to my waist and my eyes are a pearl white with hints of blue that change color depending on how I feel. My tail is a sparkly blue with pinkish purple hues when I shift to my mermaid form. I am the only mermaid within the entire kingdom to be able to shift at will. It comes in handy when I really need it to.
I also have a pet shark I named Poseidon that I visit every day after school even when I have practice. I'm currently in English class which is my last class of the day the teacher, Mr. Brooks, is having us do a book report on 'The Great Gatsby' after making us read the book and watch the movie. He isn't really strict, just likes getting things done in a certain amount of time and he's really nice. He lets us have extensions if we need them.
Prince Vlad of the Moonlight Kingdom of vampires is in this class too and he sits right behind me. We don't talk unless we have to. He's the star captain of the football team and today we have practice after class on the field. Our coaches told us that the boys would have one side of the field while us girls have the other side.
I feel a tap on my shoulder and I look to see who tapped my shoulder and it was Lilo. "Could I get a pencil? Mine broke and I forgot to buy more."
"You can have one of mine, I have a lot." I say and let her choose which one she wants and thanks me when she gets the one she wants. I feel eyes boring into the back of my head and I know exactly who it is. I don't turn to look and instead ignore him.
When the bell rings I'm one of the last students out of the class because Mr. Brooks has me stay back for a minute to talk to me about an upcoming game and asks if I need a couple more days to catch up on homework. I tell him that I do and that I really appreciate the extension.
After talking to Mr. Brooks I walked out of the classroom and out to the football field. I wore my black and red cheer uniform all day today. The top was cropped just above my belly button and the skirt went to mid-thigh. I had my hair in a high ponytail and I decided to wear a black plain choker today to go with the uniform.
Once out on the field, the guys were on the right side of the field and the other cheerleaders were on the left. It was split horizontally between us. We were practicing a cheer when the football came flying at me and I caught it before it hit me in the face.
"Oh my God, are you okay Lani?" One of the girls asks.
"Yeah, I'm fine." I say and walk over to the guys and give the ball back to their coach.
"Are you okay? That ball was flying right at your face." He looks at me concerned and I just smile at him.
"I'm fine, I caught it before it did any real damage. I'm just glad I noticed it before it hit me, or I really wouldn't have been fine." I say giggling a little before running back to the other side of the field and we go back to practicing without further delay.
It was dark out before we were allowed to go home. I texted my sister asking her to come pick me up, but she said she had to work late and couldn't until way later so I decided to walk home. I was halfway out of the parking lot of the school when someone pulled up on a motorcycle beside me. I was paying attention to my phone and had my earbuds in listening to music.
I look up from my phone when I noticed them and it was Vlad. What does he need? I turn my music off and take my earbuds out when he wakes his hand to talk to me.
"What is it?" I ask, tilting my head to the side.
"Do you need a ride?" He asks and I look at him a little shocked.
"Yeah." I say and nod.
"Get on and hold on tight." He says and I put my phone in between my breasts and put my earbuds in my backpack before getting on behind him and holding on. Once I'm settled he leaves the parking lot and heads towards my sister's apartment complex. He only knows where to go because he's taken me there a couple of times when my sister couldn't pick me up.
It was about fifteen minutes before we got to the complex and I got off the bike once he was parked. I was about to leave when he grabbed my arm. "I'm, sorry, about the ball. Luke had bad aim today. He felt bad about it almost hitting you." He says, shocking me when he apologizes for something he didn't do.
"It's okay, really. No harm done. It was an accident. Even if it did hit me I wouldn't have been mad about it. Accidents happen." I tell him. Standing in front of him, with the cold October wind blowing towards me, I can smell a hint of freshly cut leather and pinewood along with the scent of those white and tan sticks that the football players sometimes smoke when they're stressed about a game.
"He wanted me to ask you if you could meet him after school, says he wants to make it up to you. He said to meet him on the field." Vlad says as he lets my arm go.
"Oh, okay. He doesn't have to, but if it'll make him feel better then I will meet him. Is that all?" I ask turning to him fully and look into his beautiful garnet colored eyes. He's hot, with his almost shoulder length black hair that fell in waves. He had tan skin that looked almost olive colored. I wanted to curl my fingers into his hair but fought the urge.
We haven't really talked much even though we're both star captains and popular. I can sometimes hear people ask when we're going to get together, but I usually just ignore them. We both have too much to do. Especially since we're both royals. We don't really have time for romance. Plus, we're looking for our mates.
"I'll let him know, goodnight." He says and the rides out of the parking lot, leaving me standing and watching him leave. He didn't let me say goodnight back. I shake my head then head up the stairs to the fourth floor of the apartment building and unlock the door and walk inside.
I go to my room and put my backpack on my closet door handle before I take off my uniform and get in the shower. After I shower and get dressed in my PJ shorts and a take top I lay in bed and call Kamea, my best friend who is a werewolf.
"Hey girl, how was practice?" She asks after answering on the first ring. We were on a video chat because I wanted to see what she was doing.
"Exhausting. I also almost got hit in the face with a football. Luke had a bad aim today and was throwing the ball left and right. The coach made him sit out after the sixth attempt at hitting me by accident. I caught every single one of course." I tell her as I watch her cook food.
"Damn girl, are you okay?! Makaio told me how badass you looked catching the ball with one hand. How is your hand? It's gotta hurt after catching it so many times." Her voice kept getting higher from her usual low and velvety tone as she talked and asked her questions.
I rolled my eyes at her and smiled. "I'm fine, why everyone keep asking me if I'm okay? I would tell you if I wasn't."
"True, but that doesn't keep us from worrying about you. Did Vlad take you home or was your sister able to pick you up?" She asked, shoving a piece of cheese into her mouth.
"Yeah, yeah, whatever. To answer your question, yes, Vlad brought me home and no she wasn't. She has to work until one in the morning tonight." I tell her and sit up on my bed, crisscrossing my legs as I set up my phone on my pillows.
"I have a feeling he has a thing for you but won't admit it. I mean, how could he not? You're a fucking snack girl." She says and fake checks me out, making me laugh.
"Yeah right, as if. We don't talk to each other unless we have to or we're third wheels to your dates with Makaio." I tell her.
"We have been trying to set you two up for months! You can't tell me that you don't like him even a little bit." She raises a brow at me.
"I do like him, just, not like that." I say. We talk for a few more hours before we fall asleep on the phone.
