The grand ballroom of the Romano Grand Hotel glittered like heaven.

Crystal chandeliers dripped from the ceiling like diamonds spun from starlight, casting golden reflections over marble floors so polished they mirrored every step. The air smelled of roses, expensive perfume, and champagne. Laughter floated through the room, elegant and effortless, while the city’s wealthiest elites mingled beneath silver arches and cascading white flowers.

Tonight was supposed to be the happiest night of my life.

My engagement night.

I stood at the top of the staircase in a breathtaking ivory gown, my fingers trembling as they brushed against the delicate fabric. Diamonds sparkled at my neck—my fiancé Daniel’s gift from earlier that evening. Everyone said I looked like royalty.

But royalty, I would soon learn, could still be humiliated.

“Smile, Sophia,” my mother whispered sharply beside me, her polished grin never wavering as cameras flashed below. “Tonight secures your future.”

My future.

I used to believe that future was Daniel Whitmore.

Daniel—charming, wealthy, adored by everyone. The heir to one of the city’s most powerful business empires. For three years, I had loved him with everything I had. Or perhaps… I had loved the version of him he carefully created for me.

The orchestra began to play.

A soft murmur spread through the crowd as Daniel stepped forward near the center stage, dressed in a tailored black tuxedo, devastatingly handsome beneath the lights.

My heart pounded.

This was it.

I began descending the staircase slowly, each step rehearsed to perfection, every eye locked on me.

Then I saw it.

At first, it was small—almost unnoticeable.

A lipstick stain.

Bright red.

On Daniel’s collar.

My steps faltered.

No… maybe I was mistaken.

But then Daniel glanced toward the right wing of the ballroom.

And smiled.

Not at me.

At her.

My younger sister, Vanessa.

Standing near the champagne tower in a silver dress that clung too tightly, her lips painted the exact same shade of red.

My breath caught.

No.

No, no, no.

The room suddenly felt too hot, too loud, too cruel.

I kept walking, because stopping now would cause a scene. Because years of conditioning taught me one thing: suffer beautifully.

By the time I reached Daniel, my chest was tight enough to shatter.

He took my hand.

Cold fingers.

Stranger’s fingers.

“You look beautiful,” he murmured.

I stared at him, my voice dangerously soft.

“Your collar.”

For the briefest second, panic flashed in his eyes.

Then arrogance replaced it.

Daniel leaned closer, his smile still perfect for the audience.

“Keep your voice down.”

My world cracked.

“You disgusting—”

“Ladies and gentlemen!” Daniel suddenly announced, cutting me off as he lifted a champagne glass.

The ballroom erupted in applause.

I froze.

“This evening,” he said smoothly, “is indeed a special one.”

My stomach twisted.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

He turned toward Vanessa.

And reached for her hand.

The room went silent.

My blood turned to ice.

“Because tonight,” Daniel continued, “I’ve decided to follow my heart.”

Gasps exploded across the ballroom.

Vanessa stepped beside him, pretending to look shy, though the triumph in her eyes was unmistakable.

“Daniel…” I whispered, my voice breaking.

He didn’t even look at me.

“I cannot marry Sophia.”

The words hit harder than a slap.

A collective gasp swept through the guests like wildfire.

My mother nearly collapsed.

My father looked ready to murder someone—but not for me. No. For the embarrassment.

Daniel smiled apologetically at the crowd, as though he were some noble man making a difficult choice.

“Because I’m in love with Vanessa.”

I couldn’t breathe.

The chandeliers above me blurred.

The whispers came instantly.

“How awful…”

“Her own sister?”

“Poor Sophia…”

“She’s ruined…”

Ruined.

That word echoed louder than all the others.

Vanessa finally looked at me, fake pity dripping from her poisonous smile.

“I’m sorry, sister,” she said softly, though her eyes screamed victory. “Love just happens.”

I slapped her.

Hard.

The sound cracked through the ballroom like thunder.

Vanessa stumbled, clutching her cheek.

For one glorious second, silence reigned.

Then chaos.

“You ungrateful bitch!” my father roared, storming toward me.

I turned to him, shattered.

“You’re angry at me?”

“Do you have any idea what you’ve done?” he hissed. “You’ve embarrassed this family!”

I laughed then.

Not because it was funny.

Because heartbreak had pushed me so far, insanity felt closer than tears.

“They betrayed me—”

“And you should have stayed quiet!” my mother snapped.

Something inside me died.

Not cracked.

Not broke.

Died.

I looked around the ballroom—at the guests, the cameras, Daniel’s smug face, Vanessa’s victory, my parents’ disappointment.

No one was on my side.

So I did the only thing I could.

I ran.

Out of the ballroom.

Out of the hotel.

Out into the storm.

Rain poured from the heavens as if even God could not bear my humiliation. My heels slipped against wet pavement, mascara staining my face, my engagement dress dragging through puddles.

I didn’t know where I was going.

I only knew I couldn’t stay.

I reached the roadside just as thunder split the sky.

And then—

A sleek black car stopped inches from me.

Luxury. Power. Darkness.

The tinted window rolled down slowly.

A man sat inside.

Sharp jaw. Cold gray eyes. Black suit. Dangerous calm.

He looked like the kind of man mothers warned daughters about.

And fantasies ignored.

His gaze swept over me—drenched, broken, still wearing another man’s betrayal.

Then his lips curved slightly.

“Get in.”

I blinked.

“What?”

His voice was deep. Commanding. Unmoved.

“If you want revenge,” he said, “I can give it to you.”

Lightning flashed.

“Who are you?”

He held my gaze with terrifying certainty.

“Your second chance.”

And for reasons I couldn’t explain…

I opened the car door.
