Avery’s pov
I like sleeping, it’s the closest thing to death.
“Ave! Ave! Ave!” She says shoving my shoulder.
“What, Elena?”
“Finally! you’re awake!”
She folds her arms.“It’s the first day of spring break. How can you be sleeping?”
I groan and roll over to face her.
‘Ave’
I’ve never liked that nickname. It sounds like she’s calling me a bird.
“What am I supposed to be doing, Ms.happy pants?”
Elena gives me a look that suggests I must be crazy
“Are you kidding Ave? Don’t be silly, it's our first ever spring break! we should be making plans, you know, parties, picnics,oh! oh! That festival that’s coming up soon we should go there too i heard there will be cute boys”
She pokes my arm, grinning.
“I don’t know about all that, Elena."
I reach for the bottle of water on my night stand and take a sip.
Elena has always been the social one between us. If it weren’t for her I don't think I would’ve left my dorm room at all this semester. She practically forced me to be her friend.
I’m grateful for that .
Elena gets up from the bed like she’s about to give me a lecture.
“So you’re telling me you have absolutely no plans for this break?”
“I don’t know. I’ll probably just go home”
Her face lights up.
“Go home to see Eli” she says with a smile on her face.
“Can I come? I wouldn’t mind seeing Mr rich and handsome”
She’s always had this weird crush on my brother.
I pull the blanket over my face. “Oh my gosh ewww, Elena. Stop being nasty. that’s my brother”
She laughs.
“Well he’s not my brother for a reason”.
I remove the blanket from my face and stare at her. “I find it hard to believe you’d miss all your parties and events just to see Eli.”
“Try me and see,” she winks.
“Gross.”
She walks toward the door.
“Well, since you’ve decided to be booooorinnggg, I’ll leave you to it. I’m going to see what fun activity I can insert myself into”
She opens the door.
“Text me if you need anything, bye!”
“Bye,El”
The door shuts behind her.
Finally peace and quiet.
I can’t help but notice how messy the room is,clothes and shoes scattered everywhere,my textbooks piled up on the desk, and Elena’s suitcase has been sitting open for the two days because apparently she thinks packing happens magically.
I chuckle.
For about 10 seconds, I try to sleep but then I start thinking about what elena said
What exactly am I going to do this spring break? I definitely can’t spend the entire week sleeping.
Maybe I should go to that festival she mentioned.
Nah,I wouldn’t enjoy it anyway. I’ll just go home, Eli will probably have something planned or he’d know what I could do. He always does.
I smile at the thought. Going home sounds good.
My stomach growls, loudly.
I ignore it as if it would somehow make the noise go away.
“Okay, fine.”
I drag myself out of bed.
I freshen up and change into a pink floral dress and slippers then grab my phone and head out.
The hallway is quiet. It's quite unusual. Most students have already left for spring break, and the few still around are either dragging their suitcase behind them or just boring potatoes like me.
I make my way to the cafè.
The warm scent of vanilla cake hits me as I walk in.
I find an empty table near the window and order my usual Iced vanilla latte and a blueberry muffin, before taking a seat.
While I wait I pull out my phone and scroll through my messages.
Nothing interesting.
I’m about to put it away when someone drops into the chair across from me.
“Seriously?”
I look up.
Noah.
My childhood friend. We practically grew up together and somehow he has managed to follow me all the way to college.
He grins.
“What?”
“What are you doing here all by yourself?”
“I could ask you the same thing.”
He shrugs. “I was hungry.”
“So was I.”
He glances at the empty seat beside me.
“Where’s Elena?”
“Probably somewhere planning how to make this spring break the most eventful week of her life.”
Noah laughs.
“Sounds like her.”
“Yeah I know.”
He shakes his head. “And what about you? Don’t tell me you plan on staying here the whole week.”
I let out a huge sigh. “I’m going home.”
“So soon?”
“Yeah,I’m going to call Eli to pick me up.”
His smile fades. “Right. Your brother.”
Something about the way he says it makes me look at him.
“You guys used to be so close.”
“Yeah,I know.”
I touch his shoulder. “You know you can always talk to me about what happened between you two.”
He forces a faint smile. “Nothing happened, people just grow apart.”
“Whatever, if you say so.”
Our food arrives, for a while we talk about school, movies, latest gossip and absolutely nothing important.
After we finish eating,we leave the cafè together.
“I’ll see you when you get back,” Noah says.
“Probably.”
“Probably?”
“I don’t make promises.”
He laughs.
“Have a good break, Avery.”
“You too.”
I watch him walk away before heading back to my dorm.
I find the room exactly how I left it.
Messy.
I wonder when Elena plans on packing her things and cleaning up,well that's a problem for another day I guess.
I start packing my clothes into my suitcase. Thankfully i don’t have much to take with me.
I grab my charger and a few other things from around the room before picking up my phone and calling Eli.
“Hey.”
“Hey kiddo, what’s up?”
“I’m packed. Can you come pick me up?”
“Already?”
“Yes, already.”
He chuckles. “Give me twenty minutes.”
“Okay.”
I hang up and look around the messy room.
Elena was right. Maybe I do need a break.
