She initially started reading out of curiosity because a supporting character shared her name. Who would have thought that this namesake was the most loathed and malicious woman in the whole book?

In the novel, the supporting character, Xu Shishuang, in order to avoid going to the countryside, coerced her parents into fulfilling a marriage agreement with the Lu family. Because of this, the original character ended up in prison and got executed, with an ignominious death.

Lu Xingjian, because of his wife's actions, had his promising future destroyed and lost his legs in a bomb explosion during a battle with the spies. He became handicapped and had to spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair.

But once the female antagonist was defeated and exited the scene, the male protagonist surely wouldn't hang around.

Despite being disabled, Lu Xingjian chose to venture into business. He carved out a place for himself in the world through sheer determination and eventually established himself as a business titan. However, in his midnight dreams, he would always see the malicious face of his ex-wife and wake up covered in cold sweat.

In the end, of course, the female protagonist, Xia Xiaomei, transforms him with her affectionate care. Along with their adopted son, Xie Yelin, they live a happily fulfilled life as a family.
