Chapter 2

"One must make the most of the joyous moments in life," my brother got drunk that day.

In the end, it was Sister Yumò and I who sent him home.

Our house is located in a deep alley on the outskirts of Licheng, filled with old houses from the previous century. Previously, Sister Yumò lived in the alley as well, but her family is wealthy and moved out long ago.

After helping my brother to bed, Sister Yumò also looked worn out with a flushed face, panting breathlessly as she sat on the edge of the bed.

I said, "Sister Yumò, it's getting late. Let me take you home."

Sister Yumò glanced at me and retorted, "When did I say I was going home tonight? I'm your brother's girlfriend. He's drunk. Shouldn't I stay and take care of him? Doesn't your wife take care of you when you're drunk?”

Biting my teeth, I forced a bitter smile on my face.

I don’t even have a wife, not to mention a girlfriend.

Seeing my silence, Sister Yumò got up and continued, "Why are you silent? Am I not speaking the truth? Not to mention staying to look after him, shouldn’t it be completely normal for us to share a bed?”

I thought to myself, isn't it that you already slept with my brother? Why are you pretending to be innocent, acting as if it never happened? But knowing about them sleeping together is one thing, could I openly expose her?

Although I felt reluctant to admit defeat to my brother, I had to accept reality, didn’t I?

“Tell me, did you only sleep with your wife after getting married?” Sister Yumò pressed on. Her gaze fixed onto me and her beautiful face close to mine, my heart beating fast, I hastily took a few steps back.

Avoiding the subject, I said there’s an empty room upstairs, I would clean it up, and she could sleep there tonight while I took care of my brother.

Just as I turned around, Sister Yumò pulled me back. "Why should I sleep upstairs? He gave me this diamond ring today, which must cost several thousand at least, right? Since my brother treats me so well, I should give him the most precious thing I have!"

"I mean, Sister Yumou, your family is so wealthy. Are you really moved by just a ring?" I asked.

Sister Yumou snorted, "It's as if you've ever given me a more expensive gift, isn't it?"

I was speechless in response.

She continued, "Let alone gifting me, you almost forgot me, didn't you?"

"I didn't!" I shouted out.

After dropping out, I changed my phone number and deleted Sister Yumou's contact. I feared I could not resist reaching out to her.

Yet, Sister Yumou's shadow was ingrained in my mind, unerasable, causing me to yearn for her even more deeply.

"Then why didn't you contact me in these four years? Why did you become someone else's son-in-law?" Sister Yumou interrogated me ruthlessly.

I didn't know why she was pressing me this hard. My mind was in chaos and due to my bluntness, I stammered, unable to utter a coherent sentence.

Sister Yumou got angry, and said with a girlishly harsh voice, "Zhang Fan, you're always like this, introverted and silent. If you don't speak up, how will others know what you're thinking? What have you been doing outside these four years? Are you unmarried? Is your brother lying to me? Say something!"

I remained speechless that day. I knew Sister Yumou now belonged to my brother, so even if I revealed the truth, what difference would it make?

Finally, Sister Yumou looked at me disappointedly before climbing up the stairs to her room.

After who knows how long, I was in a hazy state of sleep. I felt uneasy, opened my eyes, and found myself in a sea of flames.

Our house was on fire!

I rushed frantically into my brother's room and woke him up.

My brother was scared out of his wits too, and his initial reaction was to bolt.

I grabbed him and said, "Our sister Yumo is still upstairs!"

My brother looked terrified at that moment. As the fire grew fiercer, he rushed out of the yard without a word, breaking free from my grasp.

The fire was getting more and more intense, and the house wouldn't be able to hold up for long. If I fled immediately, I had a good chance of making it out, but what about Yumo?

My brother had already run for his life. Was I supposed to abandon Yumo?!

I don't know where the courage came from at that moment. I rushed into the kitchen first to drench my clothes, then went to Yumo's room.

The entire room was engulfed in flames, and I could faintly hear the cries for help from Yumo in the room. When I kicked open the door and rushed in, Yumo had already passed out, luckily, the fire hadn't reached her.

I had been doing physical work all these years, so I was quite strong, but facing the raging fire, my consciousness began to blur. All I remember is that just as I was carrying Yumo out of the house, a piece of wood suddenly hit my back, and then I blacked out.

When I came to, Yumo was huddled against my brother, sobbing.

People from neighboring houses had come over to help by then. Though the fire had been doused, the house was destroyed.

I asked Yumo if she was hurt. She just glanced at me indifferently and said, "Now you remember me. Where were you when the fire broke out? Lucky for me, Yong

my brother's name

saved me or else I would've been dead."

Upon hearing that, I couldn't help but look at my brother in disbelief.

While holding Yumo, my brother spoke, "Yumo, I've told you that I will take care of you for a lifetime, even if it costs me my life, I will protect you."

"Yong, I'm very touched, thank you."

Even though I might have been slow in figuring out things, I caught Yumo's mistake—the one who saved her wasn't my brother, it was me!

What was even more outrageous was that my brother shamelessly admitted that he was the one who saved sister Yumo!

That moment, I completely exploded!

If it weren't for paying his school tuition, I would never have worked in the coal mine.

I struggled for the last four years, if not for my strong will to survive, I would have been buried alive by now.

But he doesn't care about any of the sacrifices I made for him!

I roared, "I am the one who saved you!"

Sister Yumo looked at me in surprise, but her eyes quickly returned to calmness.

My brother immediately responded, "Xiao Fan, you saw the fire and escaped. I clearly risked my life to save Yumo, how does it become your merit? What are you trying to say? Anyway, Yumo is my girlfriend, I should save her. Why did you save her? And why should Yumo believe you?"

Sister Yumo coldly glanced at me and said, "Zhang Fan, your brother is right. Do you know how much courage it takes to go in and save people under those circumstances? Would you risk your life to save me? If I was that important to you, you wouldn't have lost contact with me for four years, right? Let's just end this matter here, who owes me what, I am clear about it."

Facing sister Yumo's questioning, I fell silent again.

She was right, how could someone who hasn't contacted her for four years save her life during a crisis?

Who would believe it if told?

That incident also showed me clearly what kind of person my brother was.

The so-called fraternal feelings are worthless in his eyes!

He only uses the name of brotherhood to bind me, take advantage of me, and squeeze every single penny of my hard-earned money.
