Chapter 2

"Grandson?"

I didn't understand what my mother-in-law was saying, so I looked up at Chen Feng.

Chen Feng avoided my gaze, whispering, "The child is not a girl, but a boy."

A boy…

Hearing this, I burst out laughing, tears streaming down my face.

They believed the doctor and meticulously planned to abort my child.

But unexpectedly, this child turned out to be a boy!

Retribution…

This is all retribution…

My mother-in-law cursed at me some more before she left. I lay on the bed, staring listlessly at the ceiling. Regardless of how much Chen Feng called out to me, I remained silent.

For seven straight days, I stayed in the hospital where Chen Feng came to deliver meals to me daily. However, I never gave him a pleasant look.

I had thought it through very clearly during this period. Once I was discharged, I would divorce Chen Feng.

One day after I finished my meal, Chen Feng didn't leave but instead pulled up a chair to sit by my bed.

"Wife, are you thirsty? I'll pour you a glass of water."

Without looking up, I kept my gaze fixed on my own hands.

"Go away, I don't want to see you anymore."

"Honey, I know I was wrong. I'm not justified, I'm heartless. But she is my mother, and for so many years, she has been through so much for me. Now that life has finally become sweet after the pain, she wants to see her grandson, how could I deprive her of this hope?"

After saying these words, Chen Feng buried his head in my bed, his shoulders shaking continuously.

During these many years with Chen Feng, this was the first time I had witnessed him so vulnerable.

Even in the past when he couldn't find a job for three consecutive months, and I was anxiously beside him, he always comforted me with a smile.

But now, his fragility moved me.

For a while, my mind was in a whirl of thoughts, not knowing what to do. The resolution I had made a few days earlier evaporated in this moment.

After a while, Chen Feng lifted his head to look at me.

Perhaps seeing my hesitation, Chen Feng perked up, gripping my hand in excitement.

"Honey, you've forgiven me, haven’t you?"

Looking at Chen Feng in this state, I didn’t say anything, which was essentially a tacit acknowledgement.

After spending a few more days, I was discharged from the hospital.

Because I had a miscarriage with a big fetus, and laying on the ground for a long time did damage to my body, so I had to continue my recuperation after going home.

To my surprise, my mother-in-law hadn't gone back and was still living at our home.

Seeing me return home, my mother-in-law snorted coldly before retreating to her room, and with a 'bang' closed the door.

My face instantly turned sour, and Chen Feng awkwardly looked at me.

"Honey, Mom is like this because she lost her grandson. Don't blame her," he said.

I laughed sardonically in my heart; It's her own making after all.

If it weren't for her, the child would still be in my belly, and her cherished grandson would be fine.

But I didn't say these words out loud, because I knew that if I did, Chen Feng would only defend his mother, not consider my feelings at all.

The next morning, Chen Feng went to work, and I went to the kitchen to find something to eat, only to find that there was nothing in the kitchen, just some flour and rice.

Out of no choice, I had some fruits to tide me over.

I bought some meat and a chicken from a shopping app, and I went back to my room to rest after putting the chicken in the pot.

Half an hour later, I smelled something good and rushed out to check.

But when I got to the kitchen, I discovered that while the pot was still there, the chicken was gone.

I looked at my mother-in-law, who was cooking next to me and asked in surprise, "Mom, where's the chicken I just stewed?"

Without even looking up, she said, "It's just the two of us for lunch. The chicken is too much, so I put it in the fridge. We'll eat it when Xiao Feng comes back in the evening. We'll just eat this for lunch."

Upon hearing this, I looked into her pot.

Stunned at the sight of a pot of boiled cabbage in clear water, I looked at my mother-in-law in disbelief.

"Mom, I just had a miscarriage and need to regain my strength. This is too bland for me," I said.

With a 'bang', Granny threw the spatula into the pot, scornfully saying, "Eat, eat, eat, all you know is to eat. You don't do any work, yet still eat so much. Why doesn't it choke you? This is what you have for today. Eat or not, it's your choice. Do you really think you're some kind of rich princess?"

Granny's words ignited my temper. It's the food I bought, and she's dictating whether I can eat it or not!

I went straight to the refrigerator and took out the chicken that I had stewed.

Seeing me doing this, Granny quickly rushed forward to snatch the chicken.

Just then, the sound of the door opening echoed, and I looked up to see that Chen Feng had returned.

I was about to speak when I saw Granny suddenly let go of the chicken, and to my surprise, she fell flat onto the floor.

"Oh dear, it hurts so bad."

Before I could react, Chen Feng had already run over.

"Mom, what happened?"

Granny abruptly pushed Chen Feng's hands away, dramatically rolling around on the floor.

"Feng, look at the wicked woman you've married. The moment you stepped out, she started hitting me. I can't live like this; I might as well die."

Seeing Granny's blatant reversal of the truth, my anger surged up, and my chest felt suffocated.

"Granny, when did I push you? It was obviously you who lied down yourself."

Granny was taken aback a moment, then pointed at me stutteringly, "Are you saying that I'm falsely accusing you?"

I sneered, counter-questioning, "Aren't you?"

"I can't bear to live anymore. I can endure my daughter-in-law hitting me, but now she falsely accuses me of lying. What point is there in living?"

The mother-in-law abruptly stood up, running towards the window, leaning out over the ledge.

Chen Feng gasped, rushing over to hold her back.

"Mom, don't be rash, Xiaoyao probably didn't do it on purpose..."

The mother-in-law dried her eyes, choking back tears, and managed to say, "Xiaofeng, let me go, let me die. I know I'm a burden, and my death would spare you any trouble."

"Mom, relax, I will settle this for you," Chen Feng comforted his mother, and then, scowling with anger, raised his head to face his wife.

"Li Ruoyao, I had faith in you. But when I was out, you had the audacity to abuse my mother! If I didn't come home early today because of unexpected business, I wouldn't have discovered your true colours!"

I abused your mother?

I was shocked, looking at Chen Feng, my body trembling with anger.

What upset me was not only his unfounded accusations but more importantly, that he had passed judgment without even asking me what happened.

I had always thought of myself as his most cherished person, but now I realize it was all just self-deception.

I gave a bitter smile and, trying to remain calm, took a deep breath and looked at Chen Feng.

"I did not abuse your mother, believe it or not."

Saying this, I picked up the chicken soup intending to return to my room. Just as I took two steps, my mother-in-law rushed over and blocked my path.

"Xiaofeng is back; where are you planning to take the chicken soup to?"

Turning to look at Chen Feng, I mocked, "See how much your mom loves you. I could only eat clear water boiled cabbage after my miscarriage, denying even a sip of chicken soup."

At that moment, Chen Feng also noticed the cabbage pot, led to a somewhat awkward expression. He quietly asked his mother, "Mom, is what Xiaoyao said true?"

His mother puffed up her chest, confidently replying, "She does nothing all day, why should she eat so well? You are the one who should be consumed better food, considering your hard work every day."

"Did you hear that?"

I looked intently at Chen Feng, not missing any changes in his facial expression.
