Staring at the ceiling with a thousand thoughts on his mind, sleep eluded Jeff as he mused on what his life would be like in college and what life has been like until now. It was the night before Jeff left for college, and the nervousness he felt was so intense that his mind pounded thunderously like a man in a death race.
Going off to college shouldn’t be a big deal, but for Jeff, who was basically homeschooled nearly all his life, it was definitely a big deal. Although he went to a regular school for three years just before graduating high school, Jeff thought it wasn’t really enough experience he needed to survive in college.
“Maybe I’ll become the best student in the school and win tons of awards...” Jeff thought to himself. “... or perhaps I’ll meet a girl and fall in love with her...” was another thought that crossed his mind. “... or maybe I could just invent something that would change the world and make me the most famous scientist on earth…” Jeff smiled as he entertained the millions of probable future outcomes that played in his head.
Jeff obviously had a super wild imagination. He would often veer off into ‘wonderland', creating varieties of simulations in his head.
In one of his fantasies, he had the ability to make himself invisible like a superhero, so he decided to use it to do something awesome. He snuck into a bank using his invisibility powers and stalked the manager while she was going into the bank and doing her usual morning routines. He walked behind her, noting the codes to all the doors in the bank, including the main vault. After his reconnaissance in the day, he left the bank and went home to set out his plan. Later in the night, he came back to the bank, jumped over the palisade fence without being spotted by security
thanks to his invisibility
, and made his way to the main entrance of the building. He simply put in the code he had gotten in the morning into the buttons by the side of the door, and voila, he was in. It was all piece of cake from here. Because no one was usually in the bank building at night, he just walked to any door, put in the password and walk right in until he got to the main vault.
When he got to the vault, he took out a few big plastic bags and began stuffing money in them. “Ha-ha… I’m rich”. he chuckled happily to himself. The mission was successful.
Exotic car, hot girls, expensive clothes... was the scene that followed. He was living every teenager’s dream. He drove into school in slow motion, like in the movies. The wind in his hair, people staring admiringly at him, hot girls all around him, the feeling of greatness and achievement in his mind... “Jeff, dinner’s ready!” his Mom called out, painfully zapping him out of dreamland and back to reality. His eyes opened, and the big grin on his face slowly transformed into a sigh of weariness as he realized he had only been daydreaming.
Jeff was an only child that came from an average income earning family. His Mom, Rose Smith, was an ER nurse. Tall, slender, beautiful brunette hair, with a smile that could light up an entire room. Jeff’s mom worked mostly night shifts, which gave the opportunity for Jeff to be homeschooled for such a long time. Jeff’s dad, Tony Smith, was also tall with an average build, and he worked at the bank. They were quite a happy family and spent time together whenever they had the chance.
When Jeff turned fifteen, he began having the desire to break free from his domestic prison and explore the world, which was evident by the frequency with which he left the house to visit his only friend at the time, Timothy Rodriguez otherwise known as Tim. They would talk all afternoon and Tim would tell Jeff all the interesting things that happened at school.
Being envious of having an active social life, he eventually told his parents that he wanted to go to a normal school. “Well, we had that in mind, darling,” Rose said as her son made his request. “The hospital is planning to make my shifts during the day permanent, and besides, I have run out of things to teach you. You’re a smart boy, and I’m sure you’ll do marvelous at school.” “Wow mom, I’m so excited.” Jeff said as he glued to his mom’s body in a tight hug. “You’ll start next semester since you’re moving to the ninth grade.” His dad added.
Highschool was a bit tough for him because he was too shy to make Friends. He desired to socialize more, but he wasn’t used to talking to people he did not know, so he just stuck with Tim all-through highschool. Jeff had no luck with girls either, because he rarely knew what to say to them. He wished he had the ability to somehow be able to boldly talk to them without freezing, especially Natalie, a girl in his class whom he had a crush on since he saw her walking into the classroom when he started the ninth grade. The only girls he talked with were the girls in his quiz team, and those were only academic related conversations or when they needed to communicate during quizzes.
“Okay, I’ll just walk up to her after today and ask her how her day was.” he would mutter to himself trying to build up courage, but when he got to where she was, he could only say “hi” and walk right past her.
Meanwhile, in his head, he had a different story. He walked to where she was sitting. “Hello beautiful,” he drawled in a soothing deep voice. “Hi Jeff,” she said, blushing. “I want you to go out with me for dinner this Friday night”. He said, trying to sound confident and domineering. “I... I.. well, I don’t know if I’ll be abl-.” She stammered. “I’ll pick you up by 6pm” He said interrupting her. He leaned in and kissed her passionately, stood up, and walked away. “Well, I wish that was how it happened…” Jeff muttered as he jolted back to reality, still walking away from her.
Jeff finally fell asleep, putting all his thoughts to a halt.
