Chapter 1 — The Day of the Result

The morning began differently from every other morning.

Areesha woke before her alarm.

For a few seconds, she simply stared at the ceiling, trying to remember why her heart was beating so fast.

Then she remembered.

Today was her tenth grade result day.

She sat up slowly.

For months, she had imagined this morning. Sometimes she had imagined herself smiling. Sometimes she had imagined crying. And sometimes she had simply imagined coming home, putting the result aside, and returning to the ordinary routine of life.

But now that the day had finally arrived, everything felt strangely quiet.

Areesha got ready and looked at herself in the mirror.

She was sixteen years old, with dark black hair, brown eyes, and a simple appearance. She had never considered herself exceptionally beautiful, and she had never spent much time worrying about it either.

There were other things on her mind.

Her future.

Her family.

And the question that had been growing inside her for months:

What would she do after school?

She left home with her family.

The journey to her girls school was short, but to Areesha it felt much longer than usual.

When she reached the school, the atmosphere was completely different.

Girls stood everywhere.

Some were laughing nervously.

Some were checking their phones again and again.

Some were already crying.

Areesha stood quietly among them.

She didn't know what to expect.

After a while, the result sheets were distributed.

Her hands trembled slightly as she received hers.

She looked down.

For a moment, she couldn't understand the numbers.

Then she read them again.

And again.

Her marks were around the seven hundred range.

Not the highest in the school.

Not the lowest either.

But good enough to make her family proud.

Areesha smiled.

It wasn't a huge smile.

It was the quiet smile of someone who had worked hard and finally received something in return.

One of her classmates hugged her.

“Your marks are good!”

Areesha laughed softly.

“Yours are good too.”

They talked for a few minutes about colleges, subjects, dreams, and what they would do next.

Some wanted to become doctors.

Some wanted to become teachers.

Others wanted to leave their town and build completely different lives.

Areesha listened carefully.

When someone asked her what she wanted to become, she paused.

“I don't know yet.”

The truth was that she did have dreams.

She simply hadn't learned how to turn them into plans.

She wanted to continue studying.

She wanted to earn her own money one day.

She wanted to become independent.

She wanted her family to look at her and feel proud.

But she didn't know what path would take her there.

---

When Areesha returned home, everyone was waiting.

Her mother immediately asked,

“How was it?”

Areesha handed over the result.

Her mother looked at the marks.

A smile appeared on her face.

“Alhamdulillah.”

Her father looked at the result too.

He nodded with satisfaction.

“Good.”

That single word meant a lot to Areesha.

Her younger siblings gathered around her, asking how many marks she had received.

Areesha laughed and pushed them away playfully.

“First let me sit down.”

The house became cheerful for a while.

Tea was made.

Everyone discussed her future.

Someone suggested college.

Someone else suggested a particular subject.

Areesha listened quietly.

She didn't have an answer yet.

That evening, when everyone became busy with their own work, Areesha went to her room.

She placed the result carefully inside a drawer.

Then she sat beside the window.

Outside, the evening sky was slowly turning orange.

She thought about the past ten years.

The school uniforms.

The examinations.

The homework.

The teachers.

The friendships.

The arguments.

The days when she had wanted to give up.

Everything suddenly felt like it had passed too quickly.

She looked at her result again.

Seven hundred and something marks.

A simple number.

But behind that number were years of effort.

She smiled.

Then her smile slowly disappeared.

Because one question remained.

What now?

She didn't want to spend the rest of her life doing nothing.

She wanted to earn.

She wanted to help her family.

She wanted to become someone who could stand on her own feet.

But she was only sixteen.

There was still so much she didn't know.

Areesha opened a notebook and wrote one sentence:

I will build my own future.

She stared at it for a while.

Then she closed the notebook.

She didn't know how long it would take.

She didn't know what difficulties would come.

And she certainly didn't know that a few months from that day, one ordinary decision would take her into a completely different environment.

A school.

A classroom.

A new responsibility.

And people she had never met before.

Including a boy whose name meant nothing to her yet.

Qasim.

But that name wasn't part of her life.

Not yet.

For now, Areesha's world was simply her home, her family, her dreams, and the uncertain road ahead.

That night, before sleeping, she looked at her result one last time.

She whispered,

“Allah… bas mujhe apne pairon par khara hone ka mauqa dena.”

Then she turned off the light.

She had no idea that her prayer would slowly begin to take her somewhere she had never expected.

And this was only the beginning.
