Chapter 1: Divorce at Dawn

The day I found out I was pregnant… was the same day my husband threw me away.

“Sign it.”

Ethan Cole’s voice was calm. Cold. Final.

The divorce papers slid across the table and stopped right in front of me.

For a moment, I didn’t move.

Didn’t breathe.

Didn’t think.

My fingers tightened slowly around the small white envelope hidden in my palm—the hospital report.

Six weeks pregnant.

I had rehearsed this moment all morning.

How I would tell him.

How his expression might finally soften.

How maybe—just maybe—he would look at me like I mattered.

But instead…

“Amara, don’t waste my time.”

His voice cut through my thoughts like a blade.

I looked up at him.

Three years of marriage… and I still couldn’t read his eyes.

They were as distant as ever.

Like I was nothing more than a stranger sitting across from him.

“What… is this?” My voice came out quieter than I expected.

“You know what it is.”

“I want to hear you say it.”

A flicker of impatience crossed his face.

Then—

“Divorce.”

One word.

That was all it took to shatter everything.

My chest tightened painfully.

“Why?”

Silence.

Ethan leaned back in his chair, his expression unreadable.

“This marriage was a mistake from the start.”

A mistake.

The words echoed in my head.

Three years.

Three years of loving him. Waiting for him. Hoping he would one day love me back.

A mistake?

My grip on the envelope tightened.

“Was I ever anything to you?” I asked softly.

His gaze didn’t waver.

“No.”

The answer came too quickly.

Too easily.

Like he had never even needed to think about it.

Something inside me broke completely.

Still…

I forced a small smile.

“I see.”

If I cried now, I would lose whatever little dignity I had left.

I wouldn’t give him that.

Not anymore.

My eyes dropped to the papers.

The bold words blurred for a second before I blinked them clear.

Divorce Agreement.

It felt unreal.

Like I was watching someone else’s life fall apart.

Then—

The office door opened.

I didn’t need to turn to know who it was.

The soft click of heels.

The familiar perfume.

Vanessa.

My best friend.

“Ethan,” she said gently, walking in like she belonged there. “Are you done?”

I looked up sharply.

Her hand slipped naturally into his arm.

And this time…

He didn’t pull away.

The world went completely silent.

My heart… stopped.

“Vanessa…” My voice trembled despite my effort to stay calm. “What are you doing?”

She looked at me, her eyes soft—too soft.

“I didn’t want you to find out like this.”

Every word felt like a slap.

I turned slowly to Ethan.

“Tell me she’s lying.”

Silence.

That silence was louder than any answer.

My stomach twisted violently.

Not from heartbreak.

From realization.

This wasn’t sudden.

This wasn’t a decision made today.

This had been happening… behind my back.

For how long?

Weeks?

Months?

Years?

A bitter laugh escaped my lips.

“So this is why.”

Ethan didn’t deny it.

Of course he didn’t.

Why would he?

To him, I was already… irrelevant.

Vanessa squeezed his arm slightly.

“You deserve someone better, Ethan,” she said softly.

Better.

My nails dug into my palm.

I wanted to scream.

To slap her.

To ask her how she could betray me like this.

But instead…

I picked up the pen.

If I stayed any longer, I would break.

And I refused to fall apart in front of them.

“Where do I sign?”

Vanessa blinked, clearly surprised.

Ethan simply pushed the document closer.

Cold. Detached. Unmoved.

I signed my name.

Each stroke felt like cutting away a piece of my past.

Amara Blake.

Wife.

No…

Ex-wife.

I placed the pen down gently and stood up.

My legs felt weak, but I forced myself to stand straight.

To look composed.

Untouchable.

Even if I was shattering inside.

“Take the compensation,” Ethan said behind me. “Don’t act stubborn.”

I paused.

For a second… just a second…

I almost laughed.

Three years of marriage.

And he thought I cared about money?

Without turning back, I replied quietly—

“Keep it.”

Then I walked away.

Out of his office.

Out of our marriage.

Out of the life I had built around a man who never loved me.

The elevator doors closed in front of me.

And the moment they did—

My hand trembled.

The envelope slipped from my fingers.

I caught it just in time.

Slowly…

I opened it again.

My eyes fell on the words that had changed everything.

Pregnant.

A tear slid down my cheek before I could stop it.

I let out a shaky breath.

“Don’t worry…” I whispered softly, placing a hand over my stomach.

“I still have you.”

The elevator reached the ground floor.

The doors opened.

And I stepped out—

Not as Ethan Cole’s wife.

But as a woman he would one day regret losing.
