Happy 24th birthday Maria!

This message rang throughout the room and in her mind as her best friend Eunice led others in cutting of the cake. On this specific day, she was not very happy. How could she be happy when the love of her life did not attend her birthday?

It was all merry and she pretended to be happy in front of her friends.

She however drifted from the current situation and started asking herself questions.

"Where are you Jimmy? Why didn't you come over to celebrate my birthday? "

Are you okay? Did something happen to you as you were coming?

She didn't know exactly what went wrong.

Jimmy was the love of her life. They had met seven months before and it was love on first sight. She had envisioned Jimmy to be everything she ever wanted in her prince charming. He was tall with an athletic body, good looking and with good tempers. Every woman would fall in love with Jimmy.

Her friend Eunice could sense exactly what Maria was thinking about. She however didn't want to ask her about it but decided to engage others in the truth or dare game to give Maria time to get back to herself.

Maria took out her phone and dialed Jimmy's number. It rang and was not picked up.

She dialed again, it still rang and nobody picked up. Her heart started racing with every kind of wild imaginations. Could it be that Jimmy got into an accident? Could it be that he found another lover?

At the third attempt, his phone was switched off!

She could only imagine the worst. She decided to let it be and enjoy her day.

"You only live once!" She said to herself.

She then joined her friends who were playing truth or dare and they played on peacefully.

She kept on glancing at her phone but nothing came through. After toasting to her, her friends decided to call it a day and they left.

"It's only a birthday", she told herself.

I'm sure he will attend many more birthdays in the future.

With that she started to clean after the mess that her friends had left behind. Time went very fast and by the time she finished cleaning, it was already dark outside. She gave up hope of seeing Jimmy and decided to take a bath and dress warmly for bed.

Just as she got out of the bathroom, still saw her phone blinking. She ran to answer the phone hoping it was Jimmy. However, the screen displayed the name Eunice! She was a bit disappointed but still answered.

Maria: Hello

Eunice: Maria are you okay?

Maria: I'm fine. About to sleep.

Eunice: it's your day girl. Enjoy it. Please give Jimmy time, I'm sure he has a good reason to not show up today. I'll let you rest and check on you tomorrow. Good night

Maria: good night girl. Thank you for being there.

They hang up the phone. Maria really valued Eunice. She had been her friend from childhood and she always confided in her. It was natural that Eunice knew exactly how Maria felt. She was the only friend she could count on for anything.

She finished putting her pyjamas and switched on security lights. She put off all lights and decided to sleep. Just as she got in bed, her phone started vibrating.

She reached out to her phone and paused as she saw the caller ID.
