Chapter 1: The Unexpected Happens

Kira’s POV

“Kevin Chester!” I shout angrily.

Everywhere falls silent. I did not think that would cause such a reaction. The billionaire everyone here seems to be afraid of is already turning towards me.

As he walks further, I hold on to my mopping stick like it will save me from this mess I am getting into.

“No, Kira this is not a mess” I reassure myself. Someone would have to show this man he is not really what he thinks he is.

This is my first day working as a cleaner in Chester Incorporated and I am already confronting my employer. I had hoped I would make enough money for my mother’s treatment. With the look of things now, I do not think that would be possible.

I just cannot stand arrogance and wickedness. Same thing that led my father to the state he is in now. So, clearly it is in my genes and I do not think I am at fault for that.

He is just an inch away from me now. He is staring directly into my eyes. I could not back down now no matter the consequences.

“Why would you throw your mother out thereby disgracing her publicly?” I manage to say with the best look of irritation combined with disgust and other bad feelings you can think of written on my face.

The silence is still there. I am irritated the more by how everyone is pretending to be doing one thing or the other.

“What is special about you? There are many billionaires on the face of the earth. You are not the first and would definitely not be the last” I thought to myself while maintaining the most fearless stance I could pull off.

“No matter what she did. You should not have humiliated her. It is very unkind and ungrateful of you” I continue.

“I know this might be the last time I will ever work here but that will not stop me from telling you the plain truth”.

I can already hear Ava coming near us. She must have heard that her dear best friend is about to lose her job by confronting her employer.

“Sir, I am really sorry this is happening”, Ava pleads.

“It is just her mother’s ill health that is getting to her nowadays. It has taken a toll on her mental health Please disregard whatever she is saying” Ava concludes.

While I am happy that she stood up for me, I definitely do not like how she went about doing it.

First of, she should not have used my mother’s situation to make up a lie for this man who I do not think can relate to such a problem. He certainly does not value the worth of a mother. She is free to use any other situation except my mother.

I was going to sort that with her later.

After this.

I also do not like how she is depicting me to be mentally unstable and weak. Now, I am looking like one of the terrible jokes my father always says just to annoy the hell out of me. My reason for speaking out is not as a result of my mother’s state.

Or is it?

“I do not like this, you know that right.” I quietly whisper to her ear.

‘’You do not have to like it. Just say sorry.’’ Ava replies.

I knew she was just trying out her luck in getting me to apologize. She obviously knew I was not one to back down in any situation when I am clearly not wrong.

She does not bother to persuade me again.

Kevin Chester is still looking at me.

At us.

He is probably scheming on how best he could punish us for this confrontation.

This is my first time seeing him. But I usually heard some female employees drooling over his physical appearance.

“He is very tall, thick and muscular. His blue dreamy eyes make me feel like I am about to drown in them’’ I had heard one female employee say one time while smiling like someone who had won the grand lottery prize. Others around her seemed to also agree with what she said.

One of them even added ‘’I had heard he does not like being in a relationship. All his body and money being wasted’’

Now that I think about it, it is most certainly his pride and negative attitudes that is making it impossible for him to have a woman in his life. It is people like him that use and dump women to inflate their ego.

In a bid to ease the tension between us, I start to do a quick assessment of him.

I look from his head down to his toe. Those ladies did not lie one bit. He is everything they said he was. This is probably one of his sources of his pride apart from his money.

I do not know what is keeping me glued on this spot. I had planned to leave almost immediately after saying my mind.

No, the truth as it is.

I guess it is because Ava had come and I possibly could not leave her after she tried to plead on my behalf.

I would not make my best friend look like a fool before this man. Never.

I could no longer bear to stay here any longer. I have said what I had intended to say and it was time to leave for good.

‘’It is okay. I will leave now” I say with a grateful tone to Ava.

The one thing I am worried about is whether my action would cost Ava her job.

I immediately start walking towards the entrance when I heard a voice.

“Wait”, the voice says.

It has an authoritative air to it.

Like the person is used to giving orders without expecting to be questioned.

It sounded like Kevin Chester’s voice. I have never heard him speak but I am sure he is the only one who would speak amidst everything that had just happened.

For sure it is him. Ava has a surprised look when I turned around.

“Ryan”, he calls.

Ryan Clark managing director of Chester Incorporated. He was more like the second-in-command after Kevin from what I had heard from other employees.

“Yes, Kevin?” Ryan responds with a look of uncertainty on his face.

He starts staring at me like he is searching for something.

Then I notice he starts staring at the birthmark I had at my jaw. I do not know if it is fascinating to him or not.

My mother usually tells me that people were fascinated by it when I was a baby. She says that it has gotten a little smaller now that I’m grown up.

“Make her my P.A” he orders.

I could not believe my ears. So, I turn to Ava to see if she had just heard what I heard from him.

From Kevin Chester.

From the very man I just confronted and was expecting to be sacked or even tormented.

I am too stunned to speak as he immediately starts to head towards the elevator.

“Why did you not sack me?” I manage to mutter.

He just keeps on walking like he did not just do the unexpected.
