“If you’re looking for my father, he’s already halfway to the border.”

Elena Vance didn’t flinch when the heavy mahogany doors slammed shut behind the man standing in the doorway.

She wanted to.

Every instinct in her body told her to step back, to put distance between herself and the stranger who had just walked into her family’s home as though he owned it.

But she had spent too many years learning how to hide fear.

So she kept her shoulders straight and her hands clasped behind her back.

The man in the doorway wasn’t the aging syndicate boss her family had promised her to.

He was younger.

Taller.

And far more dangerous.

Damian Mercer.

The name alone carried enough weight to make powerful men lower their voices.

For years, Damian had carved his way through the city’s underground, building an empire from weapons, information, and blood. Money eventually passed through his hands. So did secrets. Anyone who wanted something badly enough eventually found themselves negotiating with him.

Tonight, he had come for forty million dollars.

And her father had disappeared with every cent.

Damian stepped farther into the dim drawing room.

His black suit looked untouched by the storm raging outside. Rainwater glistened faintly across the shoulders of his coat, but otherwise there wasn’t a crease out of place.

His gaze settled on Elena.

Cold.

Precise.

Unhurried.

He didn’t look like a man who had just been cheated out of forty million dollars.

He looked bored.

“I know where your father is,” he said.

His voice was low and controlled.

Elena’s pulse jumped.

“He was intercepted at the airstrip twenty minutes ago.”

For the first time, something close to relief loosened the tightness in her chest.

Her father was alive.

At least for now.

She swallowed.

“Then why are you here?”

Damian took a slow step toward her.

“Because he left you behind as collateral.”

Elena’s jaw tightened.

“A fair exchange for forty million in stolen syndicate debt.”

“I’m not collateral.”

His expression barely changed.

“Then what are you?”

Elena held his gaze.

“The only person who can open the offshore accounts he locked before he ran.”

That stopped him.

His eyes sharpened.

Interest.

There it was.

Elena forced herself not to smile.

Good.

She had his attention.

“My father didn’t trust anyone with the codes,” she continued. “Not his men. Not the council. Not even Marcus.”

Damian stopped several feet away.

“And you expect me to believe he trusted you?”

“He didn’t have a choice.”

Elena took a breath.

“I was his daughter. I was always close enough to be useful and insignificant enough to be ignored.”

Something unreadable crossed Damian’s face.

Elena continued before he could interrupt.

“You don’t want my father’s debt.”

“No?”

“You want everything that comes with it.”

She stepped closer.

“The council seats. The shipping routes. The offshore accounts. The inner ledger.”

Damian’s eyes narrowed.

“My father doesn’t have the codes anymore.”

“You do?”

“I do.”

Silence settled between them.

Outside, thunder rolled across the estate.

Damian crossed the remaining distance.

Before Elena could react, his fingers closed around her chin and tilted her face upward.

“And what makes you think I won’t simply take them from you?”

Elena refused to look away.

“Because you’re smarter than that.”

His thumb moved slowly along her jaw.

“And if I’m not?”

“The moment my heart stops, the accounts wipe themselves.”

For the first time, Damian’s expression changed.

It was barely noticeable.

A slight tightening around his eyes.

A flicker of interest.

His gaze dropped briefly to her mouth before returning to her eyes.

“You’ve got nerve.”

“I’ve had to.”

His hand moved from her chin to the side of her neck.

His thumb settled over her pulse.

Elena hated that he could feel how quickly her heart was beating.

Damian noticed.

Of course he did.

“Fine,” he said.

His voice was quieter now.

“You want a deal?”

“Yes.”

“You give me the ledger.”

His grip tightened slightly.

“I keep you alive.”

Elena raised an eyebrow.

“That isn’t enough.”

A faint smile touched his mouth.

“You’re in no position to demand terms.”

“I disagree.”

She leaned slightly closer.

“You need me.”

The smile disappeared.

Damian studied her for several seconds.

“You’re asking me to protect you from your own family.”

“Yes.”

“And what do I get besides information?”

“The city.”

His expression hardened.

Elena didn’t blink.

“My father built half the network you’re trying to take over. The council controls most of what’s left. I know where their money moves, who they bribe, which officials belong to them, and which accounts they use to hide everything.”

She lowered her voice.

“I can give you the keys to all of it.”

For several seconds, Damian said nothing.

Then he pulled her closer.

His arm locked around her waist, drawing her against him.

Elena’s breath caught.

She could feel the steady rise and fall of his chest beneath his shirt.

“You don’t set the terms in my house,” he murmured beside her ear.

“Then change the terms.”

His grip tightened.

“You come with me tonight.”

“And?”

“You give me the first key before dawn.”

His voice dropped into something colder.

“If you betray me, I’ll make you regret surviving your father.”

Elena stared into his eyes.

She should have been terrified.

She was.

But fear had never stopped her before.

“Deal.”

The double doors suddenly burst open.

“Damian!”

Damian didn’t release her.

Cassian stormed into the room with a weapon in one hand and blood streaking the sleeve of his tactical jacket.

His breathing was hard.

“We have a problem.”

Damian’s expression hardened.

“What?”

“The council knows she’s here.”

Elena’s stomach dropped.

Cassian glanced toward her.

“They’ve put a hit out on her. Six men came through the main courtyard. They’re heavily armed.”

The blood drained from Elena’s face.

Six men.

Here.

Damian finally looked at her.

His thumb was still resting against the pulse in her neck.

“They’re moving fast,” he said.

Elena swallowed.

“They won’t get the ledger.”

Her voice shook.

But she didn’t step back.

“Not while I’m breathing.”

Something dark flickered in Damian’s eyes.

“Good.”

He released her and reached inside his jacket.

A black pistol appeared in his hand.

“Cassian. Clear the east corridor.”

“Blocked.”

“Then clear the west.”

“Damian”

“Do it.”

Cassian disappeared through the doorway.

The first burst of gunfire erupted seconds later.

The sound tore through the drawing room.

Glass shattered somewhere down the hall.

Elena instinctively ducked.

Damian caught her wrist.

“Stay behind me.”

“I can take care of myself.”

“Tonight, you don’t have to.”

He pulled her toward the wall beside the enormous bookshelf.

Another burst of gunfire cracked through the estate.

Elena flinched.

Damian glanced at her.

“Trust me.”

She stared at him.

For reasons she couldn’t explain, she did.

“What are you doing?”

Damian pressed his palm against a concealed panel.

A faint click sounded inside the wall.

Then the bookshelf shifted.

A narrow passage opened behind it, disappearing into darkness.

Elena stared.

“You have a secret tunnel?”

“I have several.”

Despite everything happening around them, disbelief briefly crossed her face.

“Of course you do.”

A bullet struck the wall nearby.

Damian’s expression hardened.

“Move.”

He pushed her gently but firmly toward the opening.

Elena stepped inside.

Then she stopped.

She turned back.

Damian was already turning toward the drawing room, weapon raised, preparing to face the men coming for them.

“Damian.”

He looked over his shoulder.

“What?”

“Don’t die.”

For the first time that night, his expression softened.

The faintest smile touched his mouth.

“You still owe me a ledger.”

Elena swallowed.

“You still owe me a contract.”

A low laugh escaped him.

“I don’t die that easily, little bird.”

He stepped back into the drawing room.

The secret door began to close.

Elena watched him until the narrowing gap finally swallowed his figure.

The door slammed shut.

Darkness surrounded her.

For a moment, she stood completely still.

Then another burst of gunfire erupted on the other side of the wall.

Elena pressed one trembling hand against the hidden door.

She could feel nothing.

Hear nothing clearly.

Only the distant thunder of gunfire.

Her eyes closed.

She had just made a deal with the most dangerous man in the city.

And somehow, the terrifying part wasn’t that she had placed her life in his hands.

It was that she already wanted to know whether he would come back for her.

Then the gunfire began again.

And Elena ran deeper into the darkness.
