# Chapter One — A Name in the Dark

Amara Williams had promised herself she would never look back.

Not at the house she had left behind.

Not at the people who had watched her leave.

And definitely not at the secrets her family had spent years refusing to explain.

As the bus rolled into the city just after sunset, Amara rested her forehead against the window and watched unfamiliar streets pass by.

Bright signs flashed above crowded shops. Cars moved through the evening traffic, their headlights cutting through the growing darkness. People hurried along the sidewalks, carrying bags, talking on phones, laughing with friends.

Nobody knew her here.

That was exactly what she wanted.

She tightened her grip around the handle of her suitcase.

A new city.

A new university.

A new life.

For the first time in months, she allowed herself to smile.

Her phone vibrated.

Amara glanced at the screen.

**Unknown Number**

She frowned.

The message contained only four words.

**You shouldn't have come.**

Her smile disappeared.

She stared at the screen for several seconds.

Then she typed:

**Who is this?**

No reply came.

The bus continued moving.

Amara tried to convince herself it was a wrong number. Someone playing a stupid joke. Perhaps even a coincidence.

She locked her phone and slipped it into her bag.

A minute later, it vibrated again.

This time, her hands went cold.

Another message.

**Welcome back, Amara.**

She stopped breathing for a moment.

Nobody in this city knew her.

Nobody was supposed to know she had arrived.

She looked around the bus.

Most passengers were busy with their own conversations. A woman near the front was asleep. Two students were laughing quietly over something on a phone. An elderly man stared out of the window.

Nobody appeared to be watching her.

Amara slowly looked back at her screen.

Her name was written there.

Not a nickname.

Not a username.

Her full first name.

She deleted the message.

Then she blocked the number.

"Forget it," she whispered.

She had spent too much time allowing fear to control her.

That life was over.

At least, that was what she wanted to believe.

---

Two hours later, Amara stood outside her new apartment building.

It wasn't luxurious, but it was clean and located close enough to the university that she could walk there.

She took a deep breath before entering.

"New beginning," she whispered.

Her apartment was on the third floor.

After struggling with her suitcase up the stairs, she finally unlocked the door.

The room was small.

A bed.

A desk.

A wardrobe.

A tiny kitchen.

One window overlooking the street.

It wasn't much.

But it was hers.

Amara dropped her suitcase beside the bed and walked toward the window.

The city looked beautiful at night.

For several minutes, she simply stood there.

Then she noticed something.

A man was standing across the street.

He wasn't walking.

He wasn't talking to anyone.

He was simply standing beneath a streetlight, looking directly at her building.

Amara's stomach tightened.

She stepped away from the window.

When she looked again, the man was gone.

She frowned.

Maybe she had imagined him.

Her phone vibrated.

Amara froze.

She slowly reached into her bag.

Another message.

**Don't trust the man you meet tomorrow.**

Her heart began beating faster.

She stared at the message.

Tomorrow was her first day at the university.

Tomorrow, she would meet dozens of new people.

So who exactly was she supposed to avoid?

Before she could think about it, another message appeared.

**Especially Daniel.**

Amara's eyes widened.

She had never heard that name before.

At least, she thought she hadn't.

She sat on the edge of the bed.

"Who are you?" she whispered.

The phone remained silent.

Then, suddenly, there was a knock at her door.

Amara jumped.

She looked toward the entrance.

Another knock.

This one was louder.

She stood slowly.

"Who is it?"

No answer.

She approached the door and looked through the peephole.

The hallway was empty.

Amara frowned.

She opened the door slightly.

Nothing.

Only an envelope lying on the floor.

Her name was written across it.

**AMARA WILLIAMS**

She picked it up.

For several seconds, she simply stared at it.

Then she opened the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

Amara pulled it out.

Her hands began trembling.

The photograph showed two children standing in front of a house.

A little girl.

And a little boy.

She recognized the girl immediately.

It was her.

But she didn't recognize the boy.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written:

**You promised you would remember him.**

Amara's breath caught.

She turned the photograph over again.

The boy's face looked strangely familiar.

Too familiar.

And then, somewhere deep inside her memory, something moved.

A distant image.

A child's voice.

A promise.

A name she hadn't heard in years.

Amara whispered the only word that came to her.

"Daniel."

Her phone vibrated again.

She looked down.

One final message appeared.

**Now you remember.**

Amara looked toward the dark hallway.

For the first time since arriving in the city, she understood something terrifying.

She hadn't come here to start a new life.

Someone had brought her here.

And whoever it was knew exactly what she had forgotten.
