Victor Vale stared at his phone for two full minutes, his mouth hanging open.

"Congratulations! Victor Vale, we are pleased to inform you that you have been selected for the position of Legal Counsel at Cole Global Enterprises."

He read the message again. His heart hammered against his ribs. He pinched his arm hard—a sharp sting shot through his skin. He wasn't dreaming.

"No more interviews," he whispered. A wide, breathless smile spread across his face, and he let out a sudden laugh, forgetting he was crammed into the back of a taxi on his way to another desperate interview.

The driver glanced at him through the rearview mirror. "Sir, are you okay?"

Victor ran a shaking hand through his hair. "I am more than okay. I just got selected for my dream job.”

The driver smiled in the mirror. "Congratulations, sir."

"Thank you." Victor leaned forward. "Please, turn around. Take me back home."

An hour later, Victor was pacing the cramped living room of his family's apartment, waiting impatiently for his wife, Sarah, and his sixteen-year-old sister, Britney, to return. Since their parents died, the three of them had survived on grit, sacrifice, and the occasional miracle. Sarah, heavily pregnant and working as a teacher, and Britney, still in school, were his entire world.

He spotted them walking down the street outside. Rushing to the door, he pulled it open before they even reached the landing.

"Sarah! Britney! Come inside, quickly."

They stepped into the tiny hallway, looking confused. Sarah set down her battered cloth bag.

"Victor? Why are you home so early? What's wrong?"

Victor took a deep breath, fighting the tremor in his voice. "I got the job."

Silence hung in the small room.

Sarah’s eyes widened. "What?"

"Cole Global Enterprises," he whispered, a tear finally breaking free. "They selected me."

Sarah gasped, throwing her arms around his neck. "You did it!"

They laughed and cried, holding each other tight. Britney stood frozen by the door, tears streaming down her pale cheeks. Victor pulled her into the embrace.

"Don't cry," he murmured, kissing the top of her head. "Our suffering is over."

"I always knew you would make it," Britney choked out. "You're the smartest person I know."

"Let's celebrate," Sarah said, wiping her eyes and pulling a packet of noodles from the kitchen shelf.

Victor and Britney exchanged a glance, and then all three burst into laughter. Victor looked at his small family and let out a deep, steadying breath. They had finally made it through the storm.

The first day arrived faster than he expected. Sleep had eluded him all night, and when his alarm rang at dawn, he was already awake.

"Don't panic," Sarah whispered, gently straightening his tie. "Just do your work diligently. I trust you."

"You look amazing," Britney added from the doorway. "They're going to love you."

After a tight embrace, Victor ordered a cab and headed downtown. As the car pulled up to Cole Global Enterprises, his breath caught. The building was an architectural monolith of dark glass and steel, stretching endlessly into the morning sky.

"Excuse me. Are you Victor Vale?"

He turned to see a young man in a crisp security uniform.

"Yes, I am."

"Please follow me. I'll take you up."

The lobby was breathtaking; gleaming white marble floors, soft crystal chandeliers, and a massive water fountain at the centre. Men and women in impeccably tailored suits moved with sharp purpose, their heels clicking against the stone.

Victor instinctively smoothed his modest suit, feeling entirely out of his depth.

The security guard led him to a private elevator.

The numbers ticked upward in silence. Tenth floor.

The CEO's office.

Victor knocked softly on the heavy oak door.

"Come in."

The office was vast, wrapped in floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city. Behind a massive oak desk sat Ethan Cole, younger than Victor had expected, with sharp features and cold, calculating eyes. Another man sat nearby in an armchair, clutching a thick file folder with a white-knuckled grip.

Ethan didn't look up from his computer screen. "Victor, right?"

"Yes, sir."

"I'm Ethan. Take a seat."

As Victor sat, Ethan finally lifted his gaze to the man beside him. "Maxwell, I need these financial reconciliations completed before the end of the day. No more excuses. I'm tired of your delays."

Maxwell’s jaw tightened. "I was trying to explain—"

"Enough, Maxwell. Just leave the room."

Maxwell stood slowly, his eyes raking over Victor from head to toe with thinly veiled contempt. As he turned toward the door, Ethan stopped him.

"Wait. He turned to Victor, and this is Maxwell, my half-brother. Maxwell, I want you to meet Victor. He's our new legal counsel, and he'll also be assisting with financial operations."

Maxwell froze, his eyes narrowing. "But I handle financial operations, Ethan."

"I know. No one is taking your title. But I need you to bring him up to speed. I want him working alongside you."

Maxwell forced a tight, brittle smile. "If you say so, Ethan." He turned to Victor, extending a cold hand.

"Welcome aboard, Victor."

"Thank you. I promise you won't regret it," Victor said, shaking his hand.

"That's what I like to hear," Ethan chimed in, leaning back in his chair. "Everyone here works hard. I value loyalty. Your resume was impressive, Victor, but your story stood out more."

Victor blinked. "My story, sir?"

"I know you raised your sister alone, working multiple jobs while putting yourself through law school," Ethan said quietly. "That takes a rare kind of grit. Those are the people I want in my corner."

A thick lump formed in Victor's throat. No one outside his small home had ever looked at him and seen his worth. "Thank you, sir. That means everything."

Moments later, Victor and Maxwell walked down the quiet hallway toward the elevators in silence.

As they neared the glass doors, Maxwell deliberately squared his shoulder and slammed it hard into Victor's.

Victor stumbled sideways, catching himself against the wall. "I'm—I'm so sorry," he muttered out of habit.

Maxwell turned back, his expression like chipped ice. "You really should watch your step around here, Victor."

He stepped into the elevator, and the doors slid shut, leaving Victor alone in the quiet corridor.

Victor stood in silence, staring at the closed doors.

He didn't know if it was friendly advice or a declaration of war. But as he rode the elevator back down to the ground floor and stepped out into the evening air, he looked up at the towering glass monolith one last time.

He had beaten the odds to get here. He wasn't about to back down now.
