The night over the silver-lit skyline of Veridia was unforgiving, thick with a torrential downpour that blurred the flickering neon lights of the city below. High above the chaos, on the eighty-fifth floor of the Obsidian Tower, Lyra stood pressed against the cold glass of the outer corridor. Her chest rose and fell in rapid, shallow breaths, the pulse in her throat hammering like a trapped bird.

She wasn't a professional thief. She was a woman pushed to the absolute edge of a cliff, with no choice left but to jump into the dark.

Her younger brother, Toby, was currently locked in a basement by the city’s most brutal underground loan sharks. They had given her forty-eight hours to deliver the one thing that could clear his debt: the Aethelgard Seal. It was an ancient, highly classified obsidian relic that held the secrets to the city’s most powerful shifter territories.

And it belonged to him.

Dominic Thorne.

The name alone sent a chill straight down her spine. He was the undisputed Alpha of the Crimson Fang Pack and the shadowy CEO of Thorne Enterprises. But rumors in the underbelly of the city whispered something far more terrifying—he wasn't just a werewolf or an ordinary shifter. The blood of the ancient, extinct Dragon Alphas flowed through his veins, making him a creature of pure, unadulterated dominance, cold calculation, and lethal power. No one who had ever crossed him lived to tell the tale.

Lyra pulled her black leather gloves tight over her knuckles, forcing her icy hands to stay steady. She pulled out a small, high-frequency bypass device—a contraband tool she had bought on the black market—and pressed it against the electronic lock of the private vault door. The device hummed violently, blue sparks flying from the junction box.

Ten seconds. Please, just ten seconds, she prayed silently, her eyes darting toward the empty hallway.

A sharp click echoed through the quiet corridor, followed by the soft hiss of pressurized air. The heavy metal vault door swung open, revealing a dimly lit room bathed in the soft, eerie glow of a single display pedestal.

Lyra slipped inside, her boots making no sound against the thick velvet carpet. There, resting on a pillow of black silk beneath a glass casing, was the Aethelgard Seal. It was a smooth, dark stone carved with glowing runes that seemed to pulse like a slow, sleeping heartbeat.

She didn't hesitate. Pulling a micro-laser cutter from her belt, she sliced through the glass, her heart leaping into her throat as the protective dome gave way. She reached out, her fingers wrapping tightly around the cold, heavy stone.

"Got you," she whispered, a sudden wave of relief crashing over her.

"Did you really think it would be that simple, little mouse?"

The voice didn't come from behind her—it felt as if it vibrated directly through the floorboards, sinking deep into her bones. It was a deep, velvet baritone, dripping with dangerous calm and an intoxicating authority that instantly paralyzed her muscles.

Lyra’s breath hitched. She turned around slowly, her hand tightening around the stolen seal, pressing it hard against her chest.

Standing at the threshold of the vault, blocking the only exit, was Dominic Thorne.

He was towering, well over six feet three, broad-shouldered, and built like an immovable wall of raw power. Dressed in a tailored charcoal-grey suit without a tie, the top buttons of his black shirt were undone, revealing the faint edge of dark tribal tattoos rising up his neck. But it was his face that made her blood run cold—sculpted like marble, dangerously handsome, with razor-sharp cheekbones and full, stern lips.

And his eyes.

They weren't human. They weren't even the gold of a normal wolf. They were molten, glowing pools of liquid fire, swirling with the lethal aura of a dragon ready to burn the world to ash.

"You..." Lyra breathed, her voice trembling despite her desperate attempts to sound brave.

Dominic didn't rush. He stepped into the vault with the slow, predatory grace of a beast that knew his prey had nowhere to run. The heavy vault door behind him swung shut with a deafening thud, the locks engaging automatically.

"I must admit, I am impressed," Dominic said, his voice a low purr as he took another step toward her. The sheer pressure of his aura filled the room, making the air so thick Lyra could barely pull oxygen into her lungs. "My security system cost forty million dollars. Yet a fragile, human girl managed to bypass it in less than ten minutes."

"Stay back," Lyra warned, lifting her chin, stepping backward until her spine hit the edge of the heavy mahogany desk in the center of the room. "I'm warning you, Dominic."

A faint, wicked smirk curved the corner of Dominic’s lips. "You call me by my first name, enter my private domain, steal my most prized possession, and then have the audacity to warn me?"

In the blink of an eye—so fast her human vision couldn't even track the movement—he closed the distance between them.

Lyra gasped as his massive frame shadowed her completely, trapping her against the hard wood of the desk. The heat radiating off his body was overwhelming, burning through the cool air of the room like an inferno. He smelled tantalizingly dangerous—a dark mix of woodsmoke, rain, crushed spices, and raw, masculine ozone.

"Let me go," she choked out, staring directly into his molten eyes. The proximity was terrifying, yet an unexpected, electrifying pulse shot straight down her spine, making her skin tingle everywhere his shadow touched her.

"And why would I do that?" Dominic murmured, leaning down until his lips were mere millimeters from the shell of her ear. His warm breath brushed against her sensitive skin, sending an involuntary shiver rushing through her entire body. "You broke into my lair, little thief. By the laws of my pack, and by the ancient rights of my blood... everything that enters this room belongs to me."

"I don't belong to anyone!" she spat back, her fiery spirit flaring up despite the sheer terror clutching her chest. She raised her hand to push his chest away, but the moment her palm made contact with the rock-hard muscles beneath his shirt, a jolt of pure heat zapped between them.

Dominic’s breath hitched slightly. His molten eyes narrowed, darkening from gold to a deep, dangerous crimson.

Before she could process what was happening, his large, warm hand shot out, his long fingers gently but firmly wrapping around her chin, tilting her face upward. His touch sent a shockwave of intense, unwanted pleasure rushing straight to her core. Her lips parted in a silent gasp.

"What a fiery little thing you are," Dominic growled softly, his thumb tracing the curve of her lower lip with deliberate slowness. The gesture was possessive, almost intimate, contrasting violently with the lethal threat hanging in the air. "No trembling tears? No begging for mercy?"

"You'll have to kill me before I beg you for anything," Lyra hissed, her heart hammering against her ribs like a war drum.

Dominic chuckled, a low, rumbling sound that vibrated directly from his chest into hers. He leaned closer, his chest pressing lightly against hers, trapping her completely between his muscular body and the desk. She could feel the hard contours of his muscles, the terrifying strength concealed beneath his fine suit, and the rapid, heavy beat of his own heart.

"Oh, I'm not going to kill you, Lyra," he whispered, his voice dropping to a hypnotic, dark cadence that made her knees feel weak.

Her eyes widened in shock. "How... how do you know my name?"

Dominic’s eyes flashed with an unnatural, predatory light. "I knew who you were the second you stepped onto my territory. I know about your brother. I know about the debt. And I know that the fools who sent you here thought they were using you as a pawn to test me."

Lyra’s breath caught in her throat. He knew. He had known the entire time. She hadn't broken into his vault by cleverness—he had let her walk right into his trap.

"You... you let me in," she whispered, realization crashing over her like a tidal wave of ice water.

"I did," Dominic confessed softly, bending his head lower. His lips lightly brushed against the sensitive pulse point on her neck, sending a violent wave of heat rushing through her veins. Lyra bit her lip hard to suppress a gasp, her body betraying her by arching slightly into his touch. "Because I wanted to see what kind of woman had the courage to march into the dragon's jaw."

His hand slid down from her chin, wrapping tightly around her waist, pulling her flush against his hard body. There was no space left between them. She could feel every inch of him, the intoxicating heat of his skin, and the wild, unbridled power waiting to be unleashed.

"And now that I have you in my arms..." Dominic growled against her skin, his teeth lightly grazing the curve of her collarbone, causing her to arch her back as a wave of intense, dizzying sensation swept over her. "...I find that I have no intention of ever letting you go."

"Dominic... please," she breathed out, her hands instinctively gripping his broad shoulders. She meant to shove him away, but her fingers traitorously clutched the fabric of his shirt, pulling him closer instead.

The emotional turmoil inside her was deafening. She hated him for trapping her, hated him for his arrogant power, yet every nerve ending in her body was screaming with an electric, overwhelming attraction she couldn't control or understand.

Dominic lifted his head, his crimson-gold eyes locking onto hers with a dark, possessive hunger that took her breath away. "Say my name again."

"No," she whispered, her defiance fighting against the hypnotic spell he was weaving around her.

His grip on her waist tightened, bringing her body so close she could feel the heavy, dangerous rhythm of his heart. "Say it, Lyra. Acknowledge who owns you now."

Before she could answer, a loud, piercing alarm suddenly shattered the silence of the room. Red emergency lights began to flash wildly against the dark glass windows, bathing the vault in a blood-red glow.

WARNING: PERIMETER BREACH. SYSTEM OVERRIDE INITIATED.

The automated security voice echoed from the ceiling, accompanied by the heavy sound of gunfire echoing from the lower floors of the tower.

Lyra’s eyes went wide with panic. "What is that?!"

Dominic didn't even flinch. He didn't look at the flashing red lights, nor did he loosen his grip on her waist. His gaze remained locked onto her face, completely indifferent to the chaos exploding outside the room.

"It seems your loan shark friends decided not to wait for you to bring the seal," Dominic said calmly, though a terrifying, murderous aura suddenly flared around him, his shadows stretching across the room like giant, wings of darkness. "They came to take it themselves."

"They'll kill us both!" Lyra cried, pushing against his chest in panic.

A dark, lethal smile spread across Dominic’s face, exposing sharp, elongated fangs that glinted under the red light.

"They can try," Dominic purred, his hand moving up to cup the back of her neck, tilting her head back as he leaned down until his lips were a mere hair's breadth from hers. "But first, they will have to account for taking what belongs to me."

Before Lyra could process his words, the heavy steel vault doors were suddenly blown off their hinges with a deafening EXPLOSION. Smoke, metal shrapnel, and fire filled the air as armed men clad in tactical gear burst into the room, their weapons raised.

Dominic didn't let go of her. Instead, he pulled her behind his massive body, shielding her entirely from the blast.

"Take the girl! Kill the Alpha!" the lead gunman yelled, raising his rifle.

Dominic let out a roar that wasn't human—a terrifying, primal sound that rattled the thick glass of the penthouse and vibrated in Lyra’s very soul. His eyes flared into blinding gold, and black dragon scales began to ripple across his jaw and hands.

Lyra clutched the Aethelgard Seal to her chest, her heart stopping in her throat as she realized two horrifying truths at once:

First, the men who came to save her brother were actually here to slaughter everyone in the building.

And second—as Dominic turned his lethal, glowing gaze back toward her for a split second amidst the gunfire—the ancient stone in her hand wasn't just a key to a vault. It was currently glowing bright blue, burning through her gloves, binding her soul directly to the monster standing right in front of her.
