Qinghe Commune, Zhangzhuang Brigade, Lijia Village.
By the little creek, a tiny, skinny figure was lying there.
Her eyes were shut, her face so pale it was almost scary, and her breathing was so faint you could barely catch it.
The ragged little shirt on her body hardly covered her arms and legs. Her two braids were neatly tied, though her hair had a yellowish, underfed look to it.
A tiny bug flew over from who knew where and landed right on the girl’s nose, hopping around like it owned the place.
Not bad here at all, it seemed to think. Soft, warm too. Maybe this could be another good spot to settle down later.
Before it could finish that thought, the motionless girl suddenly lifted a hand and smacked down fast and dead-on.
The poor little bug, still not even aware of what was happening, was flattened just like that.
"My face hurts so bad!"
The girl frowned and slowly opened her eyes. Her head was still swimming, but her hand had already gone into her space to pull out a mirror, wanting to check how badly her face had been slapped.
But the second the mirror caught her face, her hand jerked in fright, and the mirror dropped straight to the ground.
Who the hell was this?!
Brandy Rivers picked up the mirror from the ground and held it close, staring hard at the face in it. She looked left, looked right, fussed over it for a long while, and little by little, the corners of her mouth started to rise.
At first she was just holding back a laugh, sneaking a grin to herself. Then she gave up and burst out laughing at the top of her voice.
"I crossed over! I really damn crossed over!"
Brandy Rivers, an ability user who had clawed her way through the apocalypse, had gone out with her teammate Vivienne Ashford to look for supplies, only to be ambushed out of nowhere and blasted by enemy fire, a shell fragment punching straight through her chest.
She had thought she was done for, thought death was certain. But instead, she had crossed into another world.
Brandy Rivers tried to push herself up and jump around a little, just to let the excitement out, but after struggling for ages, she still couldn’t get up.
That was when she realized this body was weak to an absurd degree, and a fierce wave of hunger came surging up.
She figured the original girl had probably starved to death.
This was just too miserable.
Brandy Rivers hurriedly dug a loaf of bread out of her space and stuffed big mouthfuls into herself. She nearly choked so hard her vision went black.
She quickly pulled out some water too and gulped down several swallows in a row.
"Man..." she let out a shaky breath. "Don’t tell me I just got here only to die again. And even if I wanted to go back, I probably couldn’t. That body of mine was likely blown to bits already."
She ate and muttered at the same time, "See? I told you this transmigration thing was real. I said from the start I could bring my space and my supplies with me into a parallel world. Vivienne Ashford just wouldn’t believe me. Kept saying I was daydreaming."
The second she thought of Vivienne Ashford, her eyes turned red again.
"I brought everything with me... then what are Sister Qingqing and the others supposed to do? Are they going to go hungry? If only they could’ve come over with me..."
She couldn’t help cursing again, this time cursing the bastard who had shelled her. Now that she thought about it, she could guess most of the truth. There were only a few people with that kind of power.
Most likely it was that leader surnamed Wang from the base, the one who had been trying to force their stance and pull them to his side. Since they refused to fall in line, he had probably decided to wipe them out outright, afraid they’d end up working for some other faction.
The reason was simple. Their little team was too capable. The apocalypse had only been going on three years, and they had already grown that strong.
If he couldn’t use them, then he’d destroy them.
After Brandy Rivers had eaten and drunk her fill, she let out a long sigh. "Ugh..."
She lay back down where she was, staring blankly at the newly risen sun, then went on talking to herself.
"You poor thing... looks like you really didn’t want to stay in this world anymore. You didn’t even leave me a scrap of memory."
Just as she was about to drift off, she sensed someone coming this way. Her eyes flew open, but her body stayed still.
"Xingwan! Xingwan, why’re you still lying here? Did you finish washing the clothes or not? If you don’t get back and work soon, you’ll get yelled at again."
Brandy Rivers turned her head and saw a girl of fifteen or sixteen standing there.
The girl looked like someone who was well looked-after at home, plump and round all over, completely different from the original owner’s skin-and-bones frame.
"Were... were you calling me?"
Brandy Rivers spoke weakly, with hardly any strength in her voice.
"Who else would I be calling? Brandy Rivers, are you so hungry your brain’s stopped working?"
As she spoke, the chubby girl fished out half a coarse corn bun from her pocket and held it out to Brandy Rivers.
Brandy Rivers shot upright.
The original owner was called Brandy Rivers too?
A book flashed through her mind, the one she had read before dying, an era novel about switched identities and a true-and-fake heiress.
Don’t tell me... she had transmigrated into that book?
