  Happy Birthday

Fourteen year old Minte sat alone in the dark at the kitchen table in the small two room apartment she shared with her mom. Guess mom forgot to pay the light bill again. A single candle burned in a mason jar she had found. Peeling the plastic film back from the still half frozen TV dinner Minthe sighed. Running hot water over them didn't really cook it. She looked at the single slice of cake she had stolen from the school cafeteria. It was german chocolate, not her favorite but still cake. To bad mom was "working" she loved german chocolate. She finished off the Salisbury steak and tried without success to eat the still frozen potatoes. Finally she pushed it aside and grabbed the cake.

Minthe opened the plastic container and looked around the dark apt. She watched as a roach walked across the counter and into a crack in the wall. Minthe started to sing " Happy Birthday to me, happy birthday to me, happy birthday dear Minthe and now your fifteen." Minthe finished off the cake and threw away her containers. After cleaning up her mess Minthe took a folded paper from her pocket and left it on the table. The letter to her mom congratulating her on Minthe once again getting AB honor roll and inviting her to a parent teacher conference to discuss options for internships and colleges. Minthe had skipped 8th grade by passing the mandatory exams and forging her mom signature on the forms. She sighed and though to herself one day i will get out of this hell whole. Then she laughed at her own joke. Maybe there would be enough hot water for a quick shower. Taking her candle she started the water and quickly jumped in soaping her hair and body. Damn, the water turned cold to fast and left Minthe shivering as she rinsed the soap off. Minthe took her candle and went to her room. She pushed the two large bricks against her bedroom door and sat the candle on the over turned milk crate she used as a table. She had started pushing the bricks against her door when her moms clients started getting to touchie feelie with her a few years back. How she hated those men. Minthe sat on her mattress on the floor and opened her back pack.

Inside her bag she pulled out a package wrapped in a piece of lined notebook paper. Her one and only friend, Thetis, had given her a gift. Minthe opened the present and laughed as she pulled out a pair of red thongs. What a bitch Minthe though and laughed again putting the thongs in a box she kept her clothes in.Minthe took out her chemistry book and started reading next weeks chapter. She was half way through when the candle burned out and Minthe was alone in the dark. A small beam of moon light came in through the window and her eyes adjusted but she was tired of reading and it was so cold. Minthe though to herself, Maybe mom will come home soon, maybe she will come home alone, maybe she will remember its my birthday and bring me a big warm blanket or coat. Yeah right. Minthe pulled the thin blanket up to her chin and shivered in the dark.

When she finally slept she dreamed about the last birthday her mom had been there. It was Minthe's 6 birthday and her mom and her had spent all night making invitations. Mom would cut the paper, draw balloons and put the info on them then Minthe would color the balloons. They had laughed and sang silly songs as they worked. Minthe had given an invitation to everyone in her class. The day of the party she was so excited she could barly sit still. Is it time yet mom, how about now? After the third time she asked her mom gave in and they went early to the park. They had put up dollar store decorations and mom had made a pretty pink cake. Minthe wore her prettiest second hand dress and sat at the table smiling, waiting. At first her mom had told her that maybe traffic was bad and people were just running late but when two hours had past it was clear to them both no one was coming. Tears streamed down the young nymphs face as her mom took down the decorations and threw them into the bins.
