The glittering lights of Victoria Harbour stretched out like a sea of diamonds below the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Grand Hyatt ballroom. Crystal chandeliers cast fractured rainbows across marble floors, and the air hummed with the low laughter of Hong Kong’s elite—old money, new money, and the dangerous kind that could ruin empires with a single signature.

Damien Blackwood stood at the edge of the crowd, a glass of aged whiskey untouched in his hand. At thirty-four, he was the youngest self-made billionaire in the room, and everyone knew it. Tall, broad-shouldered, and dressed in a bespoke black Tom Ford suit that cost more than most people’s annual salary, he radiated the kind of controlled power that made lesser men step aside without being told.

His dark eyes scanned the room with clinical precision.

Sophia had arrived twenty minutes ago on the arm of Victor Voss.

His ex-wife looked radiant in a backless silver gown, her laughter ringing out a little too brightly as Victor’s hand rested possessively on the small of her back. The same hand that had been on her for the past two years while Damien had still been married to her. The private investigator’s report had been brutally detailed—dates, hotels, even the specific brand of champagne they preferred after fucking.

Damien’s jaw tightened, but his expression remained ice-cold. No one in this room would see him bleed.

He had built Blackwood Capital from nothing. He had turned a single risky investment into an empire that now controlled half the shipping lanes in Southeast Asia. And yet the one thing he had failed to control was the woman who once wore his ring.

A betrayal like that demanded payment.

His gaze shifted slightly, landing on the woman standing a few feet from Sophia and Victor.

Elena Voss.

She was everything her husband wasn’t. Graceful. Poised. Quietly elegant in a floor-length emerald gown that clung to her curves with subtle sophistication. Her dark hair was swept up in a classic chignon, exposing the elegant line of her neck. At twenty-nine, she carried herself like a woman who had perfected the art of appearing untouched by the ugliness of her world.

But Damien noticed the small details others missed—the way her fingers tightened around the stem of her champagne flute, the faint shadows beneath her eyes that even expertly applied makeup couldn’t fully hide. Victor Voss treated his wife like an expensive accessory. Beautiful to display, easy to ignore.

Damien’s lips curved into the ghost of a smile.

Perfect.

He set his untouched whiskey on a passing waiter’s tray and began moving through the crowd with predatory grace. People parted for him instinctively. Conversations hushed. Women glanced at him with open hunger. Men nodded with wary respect.

Elena was laughing softly at something an older socialite was saying when she felt it—a shift in the air, heavy and electric. She turned her head slowly.

Their eyes met.

For the first time, Damien Blackwood looked directly at the woman he had decided would become his instrument of revenge.

And for the first time in years, Elena Voss felt something dangerously close to alive.

He didn’t approach immediately. Instead, he circled like a shark, letting the tension build. When he finally stopped beside her, close enough that the heat of his body brushed against her bare arm, his voice was low, smooth, and laced with dark promise.

“Elena Voss,” he said, as if tasting her name. “I’ve been waiting to meet you.”

She blinked, clearly surprised he knew her. Up close, his presence was overwhelming—broad chest, sharp jawline shadowed with the faintest stubble, and eyes so dark they seemed to swallow light.

“And you are?” she asked, her voice steady despite the sudden racing of her pulse.

Damien’s smile was slow and devastating.

“The man who’s about to change your life.”
