Nighttime, a hotel.
A shirtless man suddenly sat up from his bed, cursing.
He came to the provincial city for some business today, running around all day till he was utterly exhausted. When he finally got back to the hotel at night and was looking forward to a good sleep, the noises next door started as soon as he laid down.
At first, he did not pay it much attention, as this thing was understandably common. But the person next door was acting as if nobody else existed.
Feeling irritable, Charles ran his hand through his short hair and went to the door of the adjacent room. He slapped it forcefully, "Keep it down! You are disturbing my sleep!"
The people in that room probably heard him, as things quieted down considerably.
However, as soon as he laid back down, his mind was once again turned into a confused mess due to the noise.
Charles gritted his teeth and muttered a curse.
But within just a few minutes, the world was silent once again.
He glanced at his mobile phone. It had only been about six minutes or so.
Leaning lazily against his bed, Charles lit a cigarette, snickered, and said, "Just like that?"
Damn, that was short.
Really a waste of a few hundred bucks for a hotel room.
—
Susan was in the hotel hallway, holding her cell phone and stepping on the soft carpet.
Her heart was racing wildly, as she was about to catch her partner cheating. This scene was something she had only witnessed on TV shows and short video clips - she never thought she would be the one walking this path.
During her university days, Taylor was her senior at the neighboring university. He was academically excellent, fair-skinned, and very gentle, exactly her type. Therefore, when he confessed his feelings to her, she accepted instantly.
Last year, he graduated and immediately secured an offer from a big corporation. His future seemed bright.
She has been with him for three years, completely heartfelt. He was truly outstanding that she even felt she did not match up to him.
In his life plans, she had always been a part. He said, once he joined the big company, he would have the ability to buy her a car, so she would not have to squeeze herself onto the subway each morning for work.
He even claimed he would save money diligently, and in a few years, they would be able to buy a house in the city.
Looking back, he was merely painting her rosy pictures.
She used to work part-time as a cleaner at this hotel and maintained a good relationship with her two sisters. So, when they recognized Taylor, they immediately contacted her, informing her that her boyfriend had brought another woman to the hotel.
Truthfully, she was not very shocked when she heard the news. She was not naive, so she sensed his perfunctory attitude long ago.
What terrified her more was the close call she had almost handing him over the relocation compensation of over a million RMB from the sale of her house back home.
She initially thought this would alleviate his pressure of buying a house.
This was truly a blessing in disguise, for she almost lost both her man and her money.
With all these thoughts racing through her mind, Susan finally plucked up the courage and knocked on the door.
"Who is it?"
Susan clenched her purse. The voice inside was one she could never forget.
She remained silent for a few seconds before the door swung open from the inside.
A heavily made-up woman gave her a brief glance, raising her seductive eyebrows in a provocative manner, "Honey, a woman is here for you."
Susan slowly walked in.
The man was shocked upon recognizing her.
"Susan... Susan Susan!"
He quickly slipped on his slippers and tightened his loose bathrobe.
"Susan Susan, why are you here? It's a misunderstanding, all a misunderstanding!" He gripped her wrist tightly, "Susan Susan, it is not what you think!"
Susan's eyes were red, and she took a deep breath, "Is everything I have seen not real?"
Their clothes felt fresh, as if just put on.
"Did you not say that you were in a meeting at your company? So, was the meeting on your bed?"
Her tone remained calm, and gentle. From outside the room, a man leaning against the wall helplessly chuckled.
Such biting words were rarely spoken by Susan, let alone words of insult.
She was always seen as a gentle soul through and through.
Thrown into a fit of rage, his facade was finally torn apart.
"Fine, let us clear everything up today. I stayed with you because you are beautiful and soft, easy to manipulate. I do not like you at all!"
The man's face was somewhat distorted, and he stretched out his finger, "Three years, we have been together for three years and you would not let me lay a finger on you. I am really fed up! You understand that I am a man, right? I have had enough of you!"
The man's voice was ear-deafening, Susan's fingernails were tightly clenching her palm, "Finding excuses for your infidelity, I also need to make things clear to you, I want to break up with you, a complete breakup."
Taylor's features contorted unpleasantly, "Fine! Do as you please!"
The woman sitting on the bed, was holding a stack of banknotes, flaunting them in front of Susan, "Honey gave all his company bonus to me."
For the first time, Susan felt that the term 'husband' was so disgusting, "Well, congratulations to you then, all this money will be yours from now on."
Outside the room, Charles took out his phone and dialed a number.
Susan looked at the man, "And another thing, you promptly move out of the house I am renting, I contributed the full rent alone. Did you not say before that the rent will be split equally between us? You have not paid me yet."
"So, kindly evacuate."
He snorted in anger, his nostrils flaring slightly, "Of course I will move out. No need for your reminders."
"I hope you have moved out by tomorrow noon."
The man abruptly stood, "Tomorrow noon? Are you messing with me? I have work, no time!"
"Honey, your ex-girlfriend has such a nice figure, and she did not let you touch her...are you sure there is not..."
Susan frowned, they were really pushing it too far.
Taylor chuckled coldly in agreement with the woman, "Who knows, it is not impossible that someone else might have had their way with her."
A clear, crisp slap echoed in the room, Susan's hand was trembling.
"Taylor, I cannot believe you are this kind of person, why did I not see this sooner."
The man covered his face, "You wench, how dare you hit me?"
He raised his hand, ready to strike back.
Just as Susan thought she was about to get slapped, a tall man suddenly appeared by her side.
Charles held the man’s hand, flinging it to one side, “You worthless thug, how dare you lay your hand on a woman?"
He winced in pain and shook his wrist off, “Who are you to interfere?”
“Merely a spectator who cannot stand the sight, got a problem with that?"
Charles stood tall, with a strong built and an imposing air about him.
Susan looked up at the guy, grateful despite his intimidating appearance.
"I see, you are her lover boy, Susan, you really are despicable!”
Charles gritted his teeth, delivering a punch that sent the man sprawling to the ground.
“Does your filthy mouth know how to say anything decent?!”
Taylor's glasses slid down his nose, "You...you...it is illegal to hit someone!"
“Stop your nonsense! She has told you to move out of the house tomorrow, did you hear that?!”
Charles exerted a bit more strength into his grip.
The man wailed, "I heard, I heard."
Charles looked up at the woman standing by, "Anything else you want to settle with him?"
Susan hurriedly shook her head, "No, no more."
He had not spent much on her, her demolition compensation was still intact, there was nothing to entangle.
"Alright." Charles got to his feet, shaking off his hands.
"And you."
The woman sitting on the bed who was scared out of her wits suddenly heard her name, and ducked off to the side.
"You and this kind of scum are a perfect match, staying together is just right, so as not to go out and cause trouble to others."
Susan swallowed nervously, it felt so good to have someone backing her up.
"Let's go." Charles turned around, taking Susan's hand and walking out.
No sooner had they left than the police arrived.
Linda, holding his broken glasses, looked anxiously at the police.
"We received a report of suspected solicitation in this room. You will have to come with us."
"Officer, you misunderstand, she is my girlfriend."
He gave a sign to the woman, who plaintively said, "Yes, we are in a romantic relationship."
Unfortunately, the moment she got up from the bed, a wad of cash scattered all over the floor.
"......"
One of the officers said sternly, "Let us start by following us."
