The heavy iron gates of Montgomery Manor shrieked against the wind as the ancient taxi rattled to a halt. Rain beat relentlessly against the glass, blurring the dark silhouettes of towering pine trees that guarded the estate like silent sentinels.

Clarissa Vance pulled her woolen coat tighter around her shoulders. She peered through the fogged window, taking in the ominous sight before her. Rising out of the gloom was a massive Victorian estate built from dark gray stone. Blackened spires pierced the stormy sky, and high arched windows looked down like hollow eyes.

"This is as far as I go, miss," the driver said, his voice laced with unease. He didn't even turn around to look at her. "I don't go past the gates. Not for this place."

Clarissa frowned slightly, grabbing her worn leather suitcase. "Is there a problem with the manor?"

"If you value your peace, you won't stay long," the driver muttered, unlatching the trunk. "That place... it ain't right. People say the North Wing has been locked for over twenty years for a reason."

Before Clarissa could ask anything further, the driver dropped her luggage onto the gravel path, hurriedly got back into his car, and sped away, leaving her alone in the pouring rain.

Taking a deep breath to steady her nerves, Clarissa picked up her heavy bag and walked toward the towering oak doors of the mansion. She had spent months applying for archivist positions across the country, and when Montgomery Manor offered her double the standard salary to catalogue their centuries-old library, she couldn't afford to say no. Strange rumors weren't going to turn her away from a fresh start.

She lifted the heavy brass knocker and let it fall. The sound echoed loudly through the quiet courtyard.

A few moments later, the door creaked open.

Standing in the entryway was an elderly woman dressed in a crisp, dark housekeeper’s uniform. Her grey hair was pulled back into a tight, severe bun, and her pale blue eyes assessed Clarissa with sharp scrutiny.

"You must be Miss Vance," the woman said, her voice dry and cold. "I am Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper. Come inside before you catch a chill."

"Thank you, Mrs. Gable," Clarissa said, stepping into the massive foyer.

The interior was grand yet suffocating. A massive marble staircase curved upward into darkness, lit only by dim wall sconces. Rich velvet tapestries hung from the walls, faded with age, and a thick layer of silence seemed to settle over everything.

"Mr. Montgomery expects absolute order," Mrs. Gable said as she led Clarissa through a long corridor lined with dark wooden doors. "You will be working in the main library on the east side of the ground floor. Your living quarters are on the second floor."

As they reached the base of the central staircase, Clarissa noticed a long, dimly lit hallway branching off toward the northern side of the building. Heavy wrought-iron doors blocked the entrance to that section, secured with a thick steel chain and a heavy padlock.

An odd chill swept over Clarissa's skin as she stared at the chained doors. For a fleeting second, beneath the sound of the rain outside, she thought she heard something—a soft, metallic scraping noise, followed by a faint, trembling sigh.

She stopped in her tracks. "What's down that hallway?"

Mrs. Gable stopped instantly. She turned around slowly, her face hardening into a stern mask.

"That is the North Wing, Miss Vance," Mrs. Gable said, her tone leaving no room for argument. "It is strictly off-limits. You are not to go near those doors, you are not to ask about them, and you are never, under any circumstances, to cross into that corridor."

"Why?" Clarissa asked softly, unable to pull her gaze away from the dark iron bars. "Is it unsafe?"

"It does not concern you," Mrs. Gable replied sharply. "Your business here is with the books in the library. Keep to your work, and you will do just fine."

Before Clarissa could press further, a deep, resonant voice echoed down from the top of the grand staircase.

"Is that the new archivist, Mrs. Gable?"

Clarissa looked up.

Standing on the landing above was a tall man bathed in shadow. He wore a tailored charcoal suit, his broad shoulders and commanding presence instantly filling the space. As he stepped forward into the dim light of the chandelier, Clarissa took in his features—sharp, striking jawline, dark hair brushed back, and eyes as cold and piercing as storm clouds.

Julian Montgomery.

"Yes, sir," Mrs. Gable answered, her voice dropping into a tone of deep respect. "Miss Clarissa Vance has just arrived."

Julian’s gaze shifted to Clarissa. His eyes swept over her with a calm, calculating intensity that made her breath catch in her throat. There was an aura of deep, brooding mystery around him, an invisible weight that seemed to press down on the entire room.

"Welcome to Montgomery Manor, Miss Vance," Julian said quietly, his voice smooth yet laced with an undeniable edge. "I hope you find our collection... adequate for your skills."

"Thank you, Mr. Montgomery," Clarissa replied, holding his gaze despite the tremor of anxiety in her chest. "I’m looking forward to getting started."

"Good," Julian said, his eyes lingering on her for a moment longer before drifting toward the chained doors of the North Wing. His expression darkened slightly. "Remember Mrs. Gable's warning. This house has very strict boundaries. Respect them, and your time here will be peaceful."

With that, Julian turned and disappeared down the dark upper corridor, his footsteps fading into the silence.

Mrs. Gable picked up Clarissa's lantern. "This way to your room, Miss Vance."

As Clarissa followed the housekeeper up the stairs, she couldn't help but glance back one last time at the locked iron doors of the North Wing.

Deep down, a strange intuition whispered to her that whatever was hidden behind those chains was not just a forgotten past—it was something alive, waiting for someone to listen.
