Imperial One, the most exclusive club in all of Linhai.
At this hour, the place was in full swing. The giant hall was packed, every booth taken. On the private stage, men and women crowded together, twisting their bodies like there was no tomorrow, going all out, partying hard under the flashing lights.
Evelyn Hartwell sat in the innermost booth, eyes fixed on the swaying crowd at center stage. Her brows drew together slightly. She lifted a hand and nudged the person beside her. "You sure he’s coming here?"
"This is Xavier Blackwell’s turf. He shows up here all the time, seriously, every few days." The woman speaking passed her a slim ladies’ cigarette. "Evelyn, relax. I already checked. Tonight, Ninth Master Blackwell is coming to meet his fiancée."
Evelyn reached out and took it, but only held it between her long fingers instead of lighting it. She glanced over, suspicion clear in her eyes. "He’s coming here for a date?"
"Evelyn, come on. This place has rooms too. Upstairs. Big beds, total privacy, whatever you want, they’ve got it."
The second she heard that, Evelyn got the picture.
Not that she cared about any of that. She was here tonight for one reason only—to find out where he had hidden her brother’s child.
A major accident had shaken Linhai. The Blackwell family’s daughter died in it.
Her brother had died in that same accident too.
And weirdly enough, out of something that brutal, one three-year-old child had survived.
What no one else knew was that the boy was the son of Sebastian Hartwell and Xavier Blackwell’s sister.
Everyone in the Hartwell family knew Sebastian had a child. They just didn’t know who the mother was.
But she did.
By the time she rushed over, the police had already told her the child had been taken away by the Blackwells.
Sebastian’s death had hit their parents hard. The second they heard the child was still alive, they practically broke down, insisting she bring him back no matter what.
So she had no choice but to come find Xavier Blackwell herself and take the child home.
Thinking of that, Evelyn raised her wrist to check the time. Her patience was running thin. "You sure he’ll come?"
"Absolutely. I heard our manager say it myself. Ninth Master Blackwell booked a room on the twentieth floor tonight."
Evelyn gave a quiet hum. "Then we wait."
Just as Evelyn was about to get up and leave, the man she had spent the whole night waiting for finally appeared at the entrance.
Her eyes narrowed.
She rose to her feet and headed straight for him.
She had barely taken a few steps when someone suddenly grabbed her arm and yanked her to the side. "An’an, what are you trying to do?"
The voice was way too familiar. Evelyn Hartwell stopped herself just before her hand swung out, then turned to look at the person holding her. "Melody? What are you doing here?"
"Why else? I was worried about you." Melody Harrington still had a tight grip on her, her brows twisted together. "Don’t tell me you seriously came here planning to kidnap him? Do you even realize whose turf this is?"
Evelyn lifted her eyes and looked toward the tall figure in the distance. Her jaw tightened. "So what if it is?" she said quietly. "I just want to find Jasper. You know my parents have been thinking about him this whole time. And I already promised them—I will bring Jasper back."
Melody pressed a hand to her forehead, looking like her head was about to explode. "I know you can fight, okay? I know you’re good. But do you even know who that man is?" She lowered her voice, but the warning in it only got heavier. "That’s Xavier Blackwell. In Linhai City, he’s basically the king. People call him Ninth Master Fu. He’s ruthless, crazy hard to read, and nobody can ever figure out what he’s really thinking. If you go head-on against him, you’re not walking away with anything good."
Evelyn looked at her. "You don’t believe I can do it?"
"It’s not about whether I believe in you or not." Melody’s voice turned urgent. "The point is, his methods are not something you can casually go up against. Linhai City is his world. I’ve heard he’s brutal—like, the kind of man who doesn’t even blink when he kills..."
