Genevieve's POV
"And I think you're all set Mrs Jones." I smiled, placing back the syringe on the medical tray beside me.
"Thank you Genevieve." She smiled warmly, crinkles forming around her doe eyes by the corners.
"You're welcomel" I replied with a smile while picking up the blood pressure monitor.
"I'll just check your blood pressure now." I said in a soft voice. She nodded trying to get up as I helped her into a sitting position.
"There you go." I said after she was seated.
I picked up the blood pressure cuff and put it around her right arm. After a while I removed the blood pressure cuff from around her arm, putting the blood pressure monitor away.
"Your blood pressure is stable. It's much better today Mrs Jones." I smiled at her.
Mrs Jones is a kind older lady in her sixties with graying blonde hair that's a patient at the hospital, she likes me attending to her or if I'm not around she asks for my friend and fellow nurse Barbara. She's diabetic and hypertensive, we get along quite well and I like her.
"Oh, that's quite a relief." she said, heaving a sigh of relief.
"It is and if you keep going at this rate you'll be back home soon." I reassured her.
"I'd like that, I'm tired of eating sugar free Jell-O." she pouts.
I laugh a little " But you know it's necessary right?"
"I know dear child, but I miss my sweeties," she replied.
"Mother can you please just forget about your sweeties for a single minute."
Maddie groans entering the room and closing the door before sitting beside her mother on the bed. Maddie is Mrs Jones daughter, she visits her daily.
"Good morning Genevieve." Maddie greets.
"Good Morning Ms Jones." I replied smiling.
"Just focus on becoming a better mother, don't you want to go back home?" Maddie asked in her British accent.
"Oh Alright." Mrs Jones huffs.
"That's much better." Maddie smiles.
"How is she today?" She looks up at me.
"She's doing much better these days. Her blood pressure is normal and she's been taking her medicine regularly." I replied.
"Oh Thank God." she closes her eyes in relief.
"So that means she can be discharged soon?"
"Yes," I replied.
"Okay, thank you Genevieve." Maddie smiles gratefully.
"You're welcome, I'll go ahead. I have other patients to attend." I smile, gathering the tray and blood pressure monitor, heading for the door.
"Okay." she replied.
"Thank you Genevieve." Mrs Jones said.
"You're welcome Mrs Jones, see you later!" I replied with a smile leaving the room.
I put away the blood pressure monitor just as Barbara walks up to me, she has bags under her blue eyes, her blonde hair sticking out in a haphazard bun top her head.
"I did it again right?" She asked chewing on her lower lip in anxiety, a habit of hers when she's nervous or anxious.
"Yes, you did." I replied, moving to the pharmacy with Barbara trailing closely behind me.
"Oh crap." she mutters under her breath.
"What happened Barb?" I asked entering the pharmacy heading to the medicine cabinet.
"Ugh! Don't ask." she groans leaning against the cabinet.
"Cara was extra fussy last night, Keith and I barely had enough sleep." she replied.
Cara is Barbara's eight months old baby girl, and my god daughter. Keith is Barbara's husband.
"I'm sorry to hear that, I know how Cara gets." I said, locating the drug I was looking for.
"Did doctor Ryan say anything?" She asked me fixing her blonde hair into a proper bun.
"Don't worry I will covered for you." I smiled at her.
Her face breaks into a smile as she lunges at me engulfing me in a hug.
"Oh, thank you so much Genevieve." she pulls back looking at my face.
"You're welcome!"
"What would I do without you?"
"Hmm, let me think," I said, placing a hand on my chin like I was thinking. " Nothing." I replied as Barbara started laughing.
I picked up the medicine bottle, placing it on a tray before walking out of the pharmacy with Barbara walking beside me as we passed the many hospital rooms in the pediatric ward.
"Did you attend to Mrs Jones?"
"Yes," I replied.
She throws her arm around my shoulder. "You're really a life saver, thank you!" she smiles widely, her blue eyes sparkling like sapphires.
"You're welcome Barb." I replied with a smile.
"How's Keith?"
"Oh he's fine. Just stressed out like I am, but he's still hanging on." she replied.
"Alright, this is my stop. I'll talk to you later." I stop in front of a door.
"Okay, I better get going..see you later." she said leaving as I opened the door heading inside.
"And where's my favorite patient?" I smile looking inside the room.
"Genevieve!" Jason squealed quickly, getting down from his bed and running into my arms, use his small body embracing me.
"How are you doing Jason?" I asked in a soft voice, crouching down to his level.
He pulls away from me smiling up at me. "I'm doing okay." he replied happily.
"No more headaches, coughs or shivers?" I check his temperature with the back of my hand.
"No, I'm fine," the adorable seven year old said.
"That's good." I smile before picking him up and placing him back on his bed.
"Where's your mommy?" I asked my eyes darting around the room.
"Bathroom." he replied pointing at the bathroom.
"Okay, time for your medicine Jason," I picked up the tray.
"Are you going to use the needle?" He asked, looking scared.
"Oh no, no needles. See." I show him the tray which held the oral solution, he peeks cautiously before relaxing in his bed.
"You'll like this one, trust me." I opened the bottle and poured one of the pink solutions in a small cup handing it to Jason.
"It tastes like berries." Jason drank the solution before I took back the cup.
"Do you like it?"
"Mhmm..." he nods, licking the residue of the medicine off his lips beaming widely.
"Thank you Genevieve." Jason smiles.
"You're welcome little buddy." I replied with a smile of my own.
"Nurse Miller." Mrs Hall emerges from the bathroom.
"Good morning Mrs Hall!"
"Morning, how's Jason?"
"He's fine, he told me he doesn't get the chills or coughs anymore."
"So he can be discharged?"
"Yes, he seems much better than yesterday."
"Okay."
"I'm going to leaving." I pick up the tray heading to the door.
"Thank you nurse Miller." Mrs Hall replied.
"You're welcome."
"Bye Genevieve." Jason waves smiling at me.
"Bye Jason." I smile waving back at him before I leave the room and closing the door.
It's afternoon and I'm seated at the cafeteria eating when my phone vibrates in my scrubs pocket. I dug out my phone from my scrubs pocket, a smile pulling at my lips when I saw the name of the person calling flash across my screen.
"Hello love." Cole's smooth voice sounds through the receiver.
"You know you're not supposed to call me at work right?" I said my lips turned upwards in a smile.
"I know but I wanted to hear your lovely voice, besides you're on your lunch break."
"But you hear my voice all day." I replied, playing with my food.
"Don't blame me, you have a soothing voice, it always makes my day."
"I'll never get tired of listening to your voice Genevieve." He said, his voice dripping with affection.
"You always say the sweetest things Cole." I said blushing.
"Only for you love!" I can tell he's smiling right now.
"How's your day so far?" I asked.
"It just got better now that I'm talking to you." He replied.
"Cole stop.. you're making me blush like a schoolgirl." I slap a hand over my mouth in a bid to stop myself from giggling sheepishly.
"I plan to do that forever love." His words bring yet another smile to my face.
"Aww... I love you." I said.
"I love you more." I hear a voice in the background.
"I have to go, Johnny's calling for me."
"Alright, bye honey. Love you." I said smiling.
"Bye love, love you more." he hangs up.
I stare at my phone still smiling sheepishly when Barbara strode to the table I'm, putting her tray down on the table before plopping down on the seat in front of me.
"Hmm, I know that face," Barbara said giving me a knowing look a smile tugging at her full pink lips.
"What?" I couldn't stop myself from smiling, tucking a stray strand of hair that managed to escape my ponytail behind my ear.
"That was Cole right?"
"Hmm..." I nod, shoving my phone back into my scrubs pocket before eating.
"If a man makes me smile like that? I'll marry him in a heartbeat. Do you know why?"
"No." I replied, drinking my orange juice.
"Because he really loves and adores me, and he's the perfect match for me."
"Take Keith and I for example, I always knew that we were meant for each other and will get married while we were in highschool."
"That's why I married him right after college, and I don't regret it, I made the right choice." She replied smiling.
"No matter how many times, I hear your love story. It always captivates me."
"Keith is lucky to have you," I said.
"I know right?" She replied laughing, I joined her in her laughter.
"Good night Barb." I said, hugging her.
"Good night Genevieve." She said, hugging me back before pulling away.
"I'll see you tomorrow." Barb said.
"See you bye." I smile waving at her before she enters her car driving away from me.
I walked away from the hospital walking down the street, the night air was cool and clean. My house wasn't that far from the hospital, so I decided to walk back home instead of driving home.
I could hear the distant blare of sirens and cars driving in the distance. I was really enjoying the cool air as I made my way back home.
I'm about to adjust my scarf that's wrapped around my neck when I heard a car speeding towards me from behind. I slowly turned around and saw a shiny black car advancing in my direction.
I got scared when the car drove past me and came to a stop in front of me with a resounding loud screech, I watched in fear as the car swung open and four men came out all dressed in black coming towards me, I panicked and started running but one of the men caught up to me by grabbing me around my waist my back to his front, I tried screaming but he clamped a hand over my mouth successfully silencing me.
Fear gripped me when they bound my hands, before blindfolding me and forced me into the car and sped away.
"Please sir, let me go." I cried. But nobody spoke to me.
"Please just let me go, I'm begging you." I cried harder.
"You can take my purse, there's some money in it, just don't kill me, I beg of you." I implored.
"We don't want your money." I heard one of them say. Goosebumps pricked my skin at the man's words.
Oh God, are they…are they going to kill me?
"Then what do you want from me?" I asked but got no response.
"Please don't kill me, please just let me go." I cried struggling to free my hands.
"Cazzo!
Fuck
Stop struggling!" One of them growled.
My tears soaked through the blindfold, sobs escaped my throat, I was quivering in fear but I managed to sit still.
After a while the car came to a stop, I heard the car door open. I could hear the men climb out of the car before one of them grabbed me and slung me over his shoulder. I was kicking and screaming, hitting his back but he didn't budge.
I heard them open a door and close it, before I was thrown down on the floor roughly, I hissed in pain at the harsh impact. I felt one of them untie my hands before they removed my blindfold.
I opened my eyes blinking to get acquainted with the bright light in the room, I looked down, my eyes widening at the sight before me.
I gasped, placing a hand over my mouth in horror. " Oh God!"
