Elena Voss just wanted to save her father's crumbling business. Instead, she signed her life away to Damian Cross — the coldest Don in the city, and the man whose family her father once betrayed. Married in a week. Hated on sight. But every night in his house peels back another layer of the monster she thought she married... and the man underneath is far more dangerous to her heart. Elena Voss stared at the papers spread across her father's desk, her hands trembling as she read the numbers for the third time. They hadn't changed. The business her grandfather built from nothing was three months from collapse, and the only man willing to save it wanted something no contract should ever ask for.

Her hand.

"You can't be serious," she said, looking up at her father. Marcus Voss looked ten years older than he had a month ago, his face gray with something that wasn't just exhaustion. It was fear.

"Damian Cross doesn't make offers twice, Elena." His voice cracked on the name, like it cost him something to say it. "And after what I did to his family, we're lucky he's offering anything at all."

She didn't ask what he meant. She'd learned a long time ago that some of her father's silences were kinder than his answers.

"So I'm the payment," she said flatly. "For whatever this debt is."

"You're the only thing I have left that he wants."

The words should have hurt more than they did. Instead, Elena felt something colder settle into her chest — the quiet, clear-eyed calm of someone who had already decided there was no other way out.

"Fine," she said. "Set up the meeting."

Her father's relief was immediate and pathetic, and it made her sick.

She didn't know yet what marrying into the Cross family would cost her. She didn't know that the man waiting for her — cold-eyed, unreadable, and rumored to have buried more enemies than she could count — wasn't marrying her out of mercy.

He was marrying her for revenge.

She'd always imagined her wedding differently — not like this, not as a transaction scrawled across legal paper by men who barely looked at her while deciding her fate. But three months ago, she hadn't imagined burying her mother either, or watching her father's hands shake every time the phone rang. Life had a way of rewriting every plan you'd ever made.

Two days later, a car arrived to take her to the Cross estate. The driver didn't speak. He didn't need to — the silence in the car said enough, heavy and deliberate, like even the air itself understood what she was walking into.

The estate rose out of the hills like something built to be feared rather than admired. Iron gates. Security she could feel even without seeing it. And at the top of the stone steps, waiting with his hands in his pockets and an expression that gave away absolutely nothing, stood Damian Cross.

He was younger than she'd expected. That was the first thing she noticed — the second was the way he looked at her, not like a man meeting his future wife, but like a man inspecting something he'd already decided he owned.

"Miss Voss," he said, his voice low and even. "You're punctual. I appreciate that in people I do business with."

"This isn't business," Elena said before she could stop herself. "It's my life."

Something flickered behind his eyes — not quite amusement, not quite respect. Maybe both. "In my world," he said, "those are rarely different things."

He extended a hand toward the open door behind him, an invitation that wasn't really an invitation at all.

"Welcome to your new home, Mrs. Cross."

The name hit her like a slap. She hadn't even signed anything yet, and already he'd erased who she used to be.

Elena lifted her chin, refusing to let him see how much that unsettled her, and walked past him into the house that would either save her family — or destroy what was left of her.
