I remember the day I have died.

They thundered to our settlement with torches, lighting up tents, massacring women and children in the dead of the night surrounded us, which was only broken by the screams of the innocent. My sister was supposed to be with the women, while I was with the old man. He taught me the secrets of the desert and its meanings.

We were in his humble tent. I still can remember the fusion of Salvia Officinalis and the tobacco scents in the air. He was sitting down in front of me with a book in his hands, conversing, showing me what I would have to do. Nonetheless, I did not hear them coming like thunder in the sky.

The old man looked up, his wolven face was shocked. But he knew I did not notice anything, yet. He quickly came over me, protecting me from the danger ahead. Suddenly, a horseman springing in the tent tried to hit the old man. Like the wind, the old man took his sword from his waist, hitting the intruder in the heart. We ran outside, the intruders set fire to the others’ tents, massacring the ones who could no protect themselves, while others – who could – fought with their lives.

He commanded me to go to my sister and protected her. I did what I was told. But it was too late. They had got her. I recollect clearly what happened, remembering her sweet voice to me: “They have come to rescue us! Delightful, isn’t it? Father had sent them to rescue us! We ought to stay together, brother.” I looked at her. She smelled of primroses. She had primroses in her hair. It suited her. I said “I love you sister, with all my heart”, giving her the locket which I bought from a Jordanian merchant, but which I intended to give on her birthday. I held her hands, glimpsed at her one last time, and ran away, as far as I could, to the old man. I still could hear her screaming my name.

While I hurried to the old man, he was being corralled by the horsemen. I glimpsed around trying to find someone to help him, however, all of the men were held prisoners. He was outnumbered. The five horsemen apprehended him with ropes pulling him to be on his knees. Two of the horsemen captured his hands while the other captured his waist and the last his legs. Soon I realized they intended to kill him in front of his men. I ran toward him, albeit I was caught by a horseman saying: “Here you are, lad! We were by our royal majesty retrieve you and your sister with safety to your father, orders from the crown, lad”. I glimpsed at his gun on his waist, I stared up at him and I saw in his eyes he knew what I thought, but I was faster. I took his gun, knocked him down, and rushed to the old man. I could hear my sister and the horseman shouting my name, but I only stared forward. I still remember the smoke, the fire, the smell of blood and bullet in my heart. I closed my eyes seeing the blackness surrounding my heart.
