Chapter 1
The Girl Nobody Could Sense
The first thing Celestine Rivers learned at Ravencrest Academy was that being invisible was worse than being weak.
Weak students could still be seen.
They could still be challenged, hated, admired, or feared.
Celestine was none of those things.
She was simply… nothing.
At least, that was what everyone believed.
She stood alone at the edge of the academy courtyard, clutching the strap of her worn black bag as hundreds of supernatural students passed around her.
Vampires moved through the crowd with unnatural grace.
Werewolves laughed loudly, their enhanced hearing allowing them to catch conversations from across the courtyard.
Witches carried glowing books beneath their arms, occasionally producing sparks from their fingertips.
And then there were the Shadowborn.
Students belonging to the most feared supernatural race in existence.
They wore black uniforms with silver emblems and rarely spoke to anyone outside their kind.
Celestine lowered her eyes when a group of vampires walked past.
One of them stopped.
He looked directly at her.
Then he frowned.
"Did you feel something?"
His friend shook his head.
"No."
The vampire looked at Celestine again.
"There's someone standing there."
His friend stared at her.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then he shrugged.
"There's no scent."
They walked away.
Celestine released the breath she had been holding.
It happened every day.
Nobody could smell her.
Nobody could sense her magic.
Nobody could hear her heartbeat unless they were completely human.
Even the enchanted security gates at Ravencrest rarely reacted when she passed through them.
The teachers called it an anomaly.
The students called it a curse.
Celestine called it normal.
She had stopped expecting anything else.
"Move."
The voice behind her was cold.
Celestine stepped aside immediately.
A group of Shadowborn students walked past.
At the center was a tall girl with silver hair.
Seraphina Vale.
One of the most powerful students at Ravencrest.
She stopped when she reached Celestine.
Her crimson eyes narrowed.
"You are blocking the path."
"I'm sorry."
Celestine moved farther away.
Seraphina looked her up and down.
"You know, I still don't understand why the academy allows you to stay here."
Celestine said nothing.
Seraphina smiled.
"You can't use magic. You don't have a supernatural scent. You can't even defend yourself."
A few students nearby laughed.
"Maybe she is human."
"Then why is she here?"
"Perhaps the academy made a mistake."
Celestine tightened her grip on her bag.
She had heard those words countless times.
Human.
Weak.
Useless.
Mistake.
She had learned not to respond.
Because every time she did, things became worse.
Seraphina leaned closer.
"Do you know what happens tomorrow?"
Celestine looked at her.
"The Moonbond Ceremony."
"Exactly."
Seraphina's smile widened.
"Every student will discover their destined bond."
Her eyes briefly flashed with pride.
"And everyone already knows who the Shadow King is expected to choose."
Celestine knew.
Everyone knew.
Caleb Nelson.
The Shadow King.
The youngest ruler in the history of the Shadowborn.
He was twenty-one, but stories about him had circulated throughout the supernatural world for years.
They said he could command thousands of shadows.
They said he could walk through darkness and appear anywhere.
They said he had defeated an army without lifting a weapon.
Most importantly, they said he trusted no one.
Celestine had never seen him.
And she had no desire to.
Seraphina stepped closer.
"Tomorrow, Caleb will stand before the moonstone."
She smiled.
"And when it chooses me, you'll finally understand the difference between someone who belongs here and someone who doesn't."
Celestine looked away.
"Good luck."
Seraphina's smile disappeared.
She clearly hadn't expected such a calm response.
She turned and walked away.
Celestine waited until she was gone before entering the academy.
She didn't know why, but something felt wrong.
The air seemed heavier than usual.
The shadows along the walls appeared darker.
And when she walked past the old clock tower, every candle inside its windows suddenly went out.
Celestine stopped.
She stared at the tower.
One second.
Two.
Three.
Nothing happened.
She shook her head.
"You're imagining things."
She continued walking.
But she didn't notice the black shadow moving behind her.
It followed her silently.
Watching.
Waiting.
---
That night, Celestine couldn't sleep.
Rain tapped against her dormitory window.
She sat on her bed, staring at the moon outside.
Tomorrow was the Moonbond Ceremony.
She wasn't nervous about finding a mate.
She already knew what would happen.
Nothing.
The moonstone wouldn't choose her.
Nothing supernatural ever did.
She had never even seen her own aura.
Her roommate had once joked that Celestine was probably invisible to the moon itself.
Celestine had laughed at the time.
Tonight, the memory wasn't funny.
She walked toward the window.
The moon suddenly disappeared behind a cloud.
Then she heard something.
A whisper.
"Celestine."
She froze.
Her heart began beating faster.
She looked around the room.
Nobody.
"Who's there?"
Silence.
Then the whisper came again.
"Celestine Rivers."
She stepped away from the window.
Her skin prickled.
The voice wasn't coming from outside.
It was coming from the shadows beneath her bed.
Celestine stared at them.
The darkness moved.
Slowly.
Like something was breathing inside it.
She stumbled backward.
The room suddenly became freezing cold.
Then two violet eyes appeared within the darkness.
Celestine screamed.
The lights exploded.
The darkness vanished.
She stood frozen, breathing heavily.
Nothing remained.
Just an ordinary bedroom.
She swallowed.
"What was that?"
Outside, thunder shook the academy.
And somewhere far away, in a room she had never seen, a man opened his eyes.
Caleb Nelson sat upright.
His shadows were moving wildly around him.
For the first time in years, they were afraid.
Caleb's expression hardened.
"What is it?"
The shadows gathered at his feet.
Then one of them formed a single word.
Mate.
Caleb stared at it.
His jaw tightened.
"No."
The shadows trembled.
The word appeared again.
Mate.
Caleb stood.
His eyes turned completely black.
"Find her."
The shadows spread across the floor.
But before they could move, another message appeared.
She cannot be sensed.
Caleb's expression changed.
For the first time in centuries, his shadows had encountered something they could not identify.
Something they could not control.
Something they feared.
Caleb whispered,
"Who is she?"
Back in her dormitory, Celestine stood before her shattered mirror.
She slowly looked at her reflection.
For a moment, everything seemed normal.
Then her reflection smiled.
Celestine didn't.
Her blood turned cold.
The reflection raised one finger and touched the glass.
Three words appeared in the misty surface:
HE HAS FOUND YOU.
Celestine stepped backward.
The words disappeared.
And beneath Ravencrest Academy, something ancient opened its eyes.
Tomorrow was the Moonbond Ceremony.
And for the first time in eighteen years...
