Mia woke up from what felt like a deep slumber. Her mind was fuzzy. She didn’t remember what happened before but she found herself inside a familiar black SUV. It was the car her fiancee, Grayson had gifted her a year ago.
She gathered her strength, trying to sit up. Her whole body was aching and she felt weak. Her stomach was also in pain. She caressed it gently before observing her surroundings.
The car was riding through a mountain area. There were only trees on her right side and the sight of the sky on her left. It was an unfamiliar area. She lived in the city, so how did she end up there?
Her gaze went from the window to the front seat and she saw a stranger driving her car. It was a middle aged man she didn’t recognize.
“Who are you? Why are you driving this car instead of my driver? Where are we heading?” Mia asked in panic.
“Hah! You’re finally awake, I was going to make things less painful by letting you sleep, but I guess it can’t be helped.”
Mia didn’t know what he meant by making things less painful. All she knew was she wanted to head back home.
“Take me back home!” She ordered.
“Sorry miss, I can’t do that!” The man replied. He might be apologizing but there was no remorse in his face. Instead, he seemed to thrive on her fear.
She tried to recall what happened before. She remembered she was at the hospital, doing her pregnancy checkup. When she was done, she headed back to the car and someone suddenly came from behind her.
The man covered her nose and mouth with tranquilizing solution and she lost her consciousness. She had been kidnapped.
Mia quickly grabbed her phone to call Grayson Croft, her fiancee when the car suddenly took a sharp turn. She stumbled and her phone slipped through her finger, falling to the ground on the front seat. She lifted her face and saw the driver smirking.
“You’re really enjoying this, aren’t you?” Mia was starting to get more and more agitated. She was scared and annoyed at the same time. She just wanted to go home.
“Listen, I don’t know who you are. Why are you doing this? Who sent you?” She asked.
“Hah! I’m doing this for the money, of course. As to why, I was going to keep it a secret for you, but since you ask, I’ll tell you.” He paused before replying.
“It’s your fiancee, Mr. Croft who sent me to get rid of you and those unborn babies.” Mia couldn’t believe it. There was no way the fiancee she loved so much would do something so cruel to her. Besides, she was pregnant with his children. He wouldn’t have the heart to kill his own children, would he?
“I don’t believe you! Grayson would never do that to me!” She denied.
Yes, Mia thought there was no way he would do something like that.
Their engagement might be sudden, but in her eyes, Grayson was a good man. He was willing to take responsibilities once he found out about her pregnancy by proposing to her. They even moved in together eight months ago and had planned for their wedding after the children were born. Why would he suddenly do something like that?
“Doesn’t matter if you don’t believe me. I’m just doing my job. Once this is all over, you’ll be dead and I’ll get fifty thousand dollars. It’s a win-win!” He said before laughing like a madman.
“No, that’s impossible! I still don’t believe you, tell me the truth!” Mia was starting to lose her temper and the man grabbed his phone.
“Okay, so you still don’t believe me? Fine! I’ll prove it to you.” He showed Grayson’s number on his contact list to me.
“See, I even have his number.” He dialed the number and put the phone on speaker mode.
“Hello, Mr. Croft? It’s me, I’ve kidnapped Mia and on my way to the cliff now.”
“Grayson is not here right now, but good job, you’ll receive the payment once this is all over.” To Mia’s surprise, it was not his voice, it was a woman’s voice.
“Oh, it’s Miss Morgan. I am also looking forward to the bonus you mentioned before.” The man smiled, his tone suddenly became polite.
Miss Morgan? There was only one woman with that surname she knew of. It was Cassandra Morgan. She was Grayson’s first love and ex. They had met in university and dated for a bit, but they eventually breakup. Mia didn’t know the reason why. She never bothered to ask either. The only thing she knew was after their breakup, Cassandra went to get her master degree in the US and got married to the son of a business magnate there.
The last news she heard about Cassandra was about her failed business in the US and divorce case with her current husband.
“Cassandra? Why is Grayson’s phone with you?” Mia asked her.
“Ah, Mia, you’re listening? Well, that makes everything easier. I am with him, obviously. He is taking a shower right now that’s why I’m holding his phone.” Mia couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Why would Grayson stay with this woman? How could she access his phone?
“Give it to Grayson, I want to speak with him.” Mia demanded but Cassandra just laughed.
“That’s not possible. He doesn’t want to have anything to do with you anymore. Don’t you understand? That’s why he’s planning to kill you and those bastard children of yours!” Mia’s world shattered when she heard those words but she was also upset.
“Don’t you dare call my children bastards! They are mine and Grayson’s!”
“Ah, who cares? You and those kids will be dead soon.” She laughed before continuing.
“You know, Grayson told me that he really hated you. In his eyes, you’re just a pest who used your pregnancy to blackmail him into marrying you. Don’t you know that?” I shook my head in disbelief.
“No, there’s no way! We love each other and Grayson loves these children.” I refuted.
“You’re delusional! After you die, I will take your place as Grayson’s fiancee and eventually his wife. We are going to get married and have a lot of children together.” Those words pierced Mia’s heart. Drop of tears began to fall from her eyes.
“Okay, enough chit-chats. Listen here, there’s a suicide note prepared in advance for you, just sign it and die.” With that, Cassandra hung up the call and the driver handed over a piece of paper to her.
“Sign this and I will let you have an easy death.” He threatened. Mia took a look at the paper and she was shocked with what was written in there.
Apparently, the suicide note declared that the children she had weren’t his and she had been cheating on him the entire time. Because he was so kind to her, she couldn’t bear the guilt of lying to him and decided to end her own life.
Mia had never seen anything more ridiculous in her life. At that moment, a lot of mixed emotions began to overwhelm her.
One of them was regret. She regretted ever trusting and loving that man. Grayson Croft. She thought he was a gentleman. But he turned out to be crueler than she could ever imagine.
Mia looked at the driver in the eyes, shook her head and refused.
“Even if I have to die, I won’t sign this paper! I am not committing suicide and these children are Grayson’s!” The driver was losing his patience. He pulled out a knife and slashed her fingers. Then, he forcefully grabbed her hand and pressed the bloody finger on the paper. Mia was unable to fight him. She was heavily pregnant and he was stronger.
Once her fingerprint was on the paper, the driver quickly pulled the paper and hid it out of sight.
“My job here is done. If you die and become a ghost, don’t come for me. Come for those people who sent me.” The car finally reached the cliff and the driver roughly adjusted the position that half of the car’s back were facing the abyss.
Mia was horrified.
“So, he wants to make it seem like a car accident?” Mia thought to herself. The driver quickly opened the door and jumped out of there, leaving Mia alone. Then, he went to the front side and pushed the car with all his might so it would fall down.
“No, stop! Get me out of here!” Mia pleaded for her life but it was useless. She could feel the car was getting pushed further and further into the cliff until it finally lost its balance and fell down.
As she fell down along with the car, the memory of the time she spent together with Grayson surfaced. The man she loved and trusted with her whole life betrayed her. Nothing could compare with the pain she felt in her heart.
“Bastard! You bastard! How could you do this to me!?” She thought.
“Grayson Croft. If I could start all over again. I would not want to know you or fell in love with you! You’re inhumane!”
The car finally smashed to the ground, rolled over and caught on fire. Everything was consumed by the flame. In the mid of it, Cassandra made a promise.
“Grayson, I won’t forgive you!”
