正文内容

Emma Carter had one goal.

Graduate with honors.

Nothing else mattered.

Not the gossip spreading across campus. Not the endless assignments. Not even the fact that half the students in the literature department were terrified of Professor James Anderson.

Emma sat in the third row of the lecture hall, her notebook open and her pen moving quickly.

Professor James stood at the front of the room.

At thirty-five, he was one of the youngest professors in the department, yet his reputation was legendary.

Strict.

Intelligent.

Unforgiving.

His dark eyes moved across the classroom as he prepared to begin the lecture.

“Literature isn't about memorizing words,” he said. “It's about understanding why people make the choices they make.”

Emma paused.

Her pen hovered above the page.

For some reason, those words stayed with her.

Choices.

She had always believed that people were shaped by the decisions they made when life became difficult.

She just didn't know how much those words would soon apply to her own life.

“Miss Carter.”

Her head snapped up.

“Yes, Professor?”

“You've been staring at the same page for two minutes.”

A few students laughed.

Emma's cheeks warmed.

“I was thinking.”

“Thinking is useful. Daydreaming isn't.”

More laughter filled the room.

Emma lowered her eyes.

“Yes, Professor.”

Beside her, Mia leaned over.

“Don't worry. He terrifies everyone equally.”

Emma almost smiled.

Almost.

Professor James continued the lecture.

For the next hour, his voice filled the room as he discussed a famous novel and the choices made by its main character.

Emma listened carefully, writing down almost everything.

She admired his knowledge, even if she didn't particularly enjoy his teaching style.

James had a way of making every mistake feel enormous.

One wrong answer could earn a long stare.

One late assignment could earn a sharp warning.

And anyone who challenged him had better be prepared with facts.

When the lecture finally ended, students rushed toward the exit.

Mia immediately packed her books.

“Café?”

“In a few minutes.”

“Why?”

“I need to ask Professor James about the final research project.”

Mia stared at her.

“You're voluntarily going back to him?”

Emma laughed.

“He isn't that bad.”

“He once made a student redo an entire paper because of one missing citation.”

“One missing citation can be important.”

Mia shook her head.

“You're becoming one of his victims.”

Emma smiled.

“I'll meet you at the café.”

“Fine. But if you don't come back, I'm reporting him.”

Mia left.

Emma turned toward Professor James, who was collecting the papers from his desk.

“Professor?”

He looked up.

“Yes?”

“I wanted to ask about the final research project.”

“Come here.”

Emma approached.

James explained the requirements carefully. The project needed original research, proper citations, and a clear argument.

Emma listened closely.

“So we can choose our own topic?”

“As long as it relates to the course.”

She nodded.

“I already have an idea.”

James looked at her notebook.

“You're ahead of the others.”

“I don't like waiting until the last minute.”

“That's obvious.”

There was almost a hint of amusement in his voice.

Emma smiled.

Then James's expression became serious.

“You're capable of producing excellent work, Miss Carter.”

Emma blinked.

It was the closest thing to praise she had ever received from him.

“Thank you.”

She turned toward the door.

Then she heard voices in the hallway.

Emma stopped.

Two men were arguing outside the office.

“You promised me this would stay buried.”

Emma recognized Professor James's voice.

But something was different about it.

He sounded tense.

“You should lower your voice,” James said.

“I don't care anymore.”

Emma glanced toward the hallway.

The building was becoming quieter as students left.

“You don't understand what will happen if this gets out,” James said.

“I understand perfectly.”

Emma frowned.

What were they talking about?

She should have walked away.

She knew that.

Instead, curiosity made her take one step toward the door.

Then another.

Through the narrow opening, she saw Professor James standing across from a middle-aged man she didn't recognize.

The man looked furious.

James looked worried.

“You've had five years to fix this,” the stranger said.

“I can't fix something that isn't mine to fix.”

“You were involved.”

“I was involved in the investigation.”

“That isn't what I heard.”

James's expression hardened.

“Leave.”

The stranger shook his head.

“You think you can keep this hidden forever?”

“I said leave.”

The man suddenly knocked a folder from James's hand.

It hit the floor.

Several documents scattered across the hallway.

Emma instinctively stepped backward.

One page slid across the floor and stopped directly beside her shoes.

She looked down.

There was Professor James's name on it.

Beneath it was the university seal.

She picked it up before thinking.

Her eyes moved over the page.

Several words immediately caught her attention.

CONFIDENTIAL.

ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT.

INVESTIGATION.

Emma's heart began beating faster.

What was this?

She looked up.

James was staring directly at her.

His face had changed.

The strict, controlled professor she knew was gone.

For the first time, he looked genuinely frightened.

The stranger turned around.

His eyes landed on Emma.

He gave a faint, knowing smile.

“Well,” he said quietly.

James stepped forward.

“Leave.”

The stranger looked between them.

Then he walked away without another word.

Emma watched him disappear down the corridor.

She slowly lowered the document.

“I—I was just leaving.”

James didn't answer.

He walked toward her.

“You shouldn't have seen that.”

Emma swallowed.

“What is it?”

“Give me the paper.”

“Professor—”

“Please.”

The word surprised her.

James Anderson didn't say please.

Emma looked at the document.

“Is the university investigating you?”

He remained silent.

“That doesn't answer my question.”

“Emma.”

His voice was unusually serious.

“You don't need to know about this.”

“But I already saw it.”

“You saw one page.”

“And it says academic misconduct.”

James's jaw tightened.

“You don't know the circumstances.”

“Then explain them.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

He looked at her for a long moment.

“Because sometimes knowing the truth puts people in danger.”

Emma felt a chill.

“What does that mean?”

“It means you should stay away from this.”

She glanced toward the corridor where the stranger had disappeared.

“Who was that man?”

James didn't answer.

“Professor?”

“Someone from my past.”

“That doesn't tell me anything.”

“It tells you enough.”

Emma stared at him.

For the first time, she realized there was far more to Professor James than his reputation suggested.

He wasn't simply hiding a university investigation.

He was afraid of something.

Maybe someone.

James held out his hand.

“Give me the document.”

Emma hesitated.

Part of her wanted to know what was inside the folder.

Another part of her wanted nothing to do with it.

Finally, she handed it over.

James took the page and quickly gathered the remaining documents.

Emma watched him carefully.

“Have you done something wrong?”

His hands stopped.

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

But his expression made her doubt it.

“Then why are you afraid?”

James looked at her.

“Because the truth isn't always enough to protect you.”

Emma didn't understand.

Before she could ask another question, James opened the office door.

“Go.”

She stepped into the hallway.

“Emma.”

She turned.

“Forget what you saw today.”

She frowned.

“I don't think I can.”

“You have to.”

His voice was firm.

“Whatever happens, don't investigate this.”

“Why?”

James's expression darkened.

“Because you don't know who you're dealing with.”

Emma stared at him.

Then she walked away.

Her mind raced.

Five years.

Academic misconduct.

A confidential investigation.

A stranger who clearly knew James.

And a professor who seemed terrified of his own past.

By the time Emma reached the end of the hallway, she had almost convinced herself to forget everything.

Then her phone vibrated.

She pulled it from her pocket.

Unknown Number.

Her eyebrows knitted together.

She opened the message.

You should not have picked up that document.

Emma froze.

She looked around.

The hallway was empty.

Another message appeared.

Now you're involved.

Her heart pounded.

Someone had been watching her.

But who?

Emma quickly locked her phone.

She turned around.

Professor James's office door was still open.

He was standing inside, watching her.

Their eyes met.

For a moment, neither moved.

Emma suddenly understood something.

Whatever secret was hidden inside that folder, it wasn't just about Professor James anymore.

Someone knew she had seen it.

Someone had noticed her.

And whoever was behind those messages had just made one thing clear.

Emma Carter was no longer an innocent bystander.

She was part of the secret.

And she had no idea what would happen next.

To be continued…
