The glass-and-steel monolith of Vance Architectural overlooked the city like a silent titan, but inside its top-floor executive suite, Nova Vance was preparing for war.
She stood over the drafting table in her office, a pair of sharp, silver calipers gripped in her right hand. Around her, trace paper was strewn across mahogany wood, covered in intricate black-ink schematics for the Meridian Tower project. Nova didn’t just design buildings; she dictated how light, space, and human life interacted within them. As Principal Design Officer, her word was law. Her standards were absurdly high, her work ethic relentless, and her precision absolute.
"You're running out of time, Nova," Arthur Pendelton said, his tone dripping with patronizing concern as he stepped into her sanctuary without knocking. The senior board member leaned heavily on his cane, his eyes scanning the blueprints with veiled contempt. "The creditors aren't going to wait another week. The debt from your father's... miscalculations... is due."
Nova didn't look up from her draft. Her eyes remained locked on the structural load parameters. "If you ever enter my office without a summons again, Arthur, I'll have security escort you to the lobby. And your position on the board won't save you."
Arthur’s mouth tightened into a thin line. "Arrogant as always. You think your talent can bridge a fifty-million-dollar deficit? The firm is drowning. We need a bailout, not another brilliant facade."
"It isn't arrogance when you're the only one keeping the lights on," Nova said coolly, finally lifting her gaze. Her dark eyes locked onto his with freezing intensity. "I know about the leaks to the press regarding our financial instability, Arthur. I know who's trying to tank our stock price before the quarterly review. You want us to look desperate."
Before Arthur could formulate a defense, the heavy double doors of the executive floor swung open.
The sudden shift in atmospheric pressure was almost palpable. The chatter of junior architects outside died instantly. Nova turned her head slowly toward the doorway.
A tall, commanding figure stepped into the light of the atrium. Julian Vance.
He wore a bespoke charcoal suit that screamed effortless wealth, his dark hair combed back, his sharp jawline set in a expression of absolute apathy. He hadn't set foot in this building since he walked away from the family name eight years ago to build his own venture capital empire.
"Julian," Arthur gasped, a sly, triumphant smile breaking across his weathered face. "You're early."
Julian ignored the older man entirely. His piercing gaze swept over the state-of-the-art studio before settling directly on Nova. The room felt suddenly too small, suffocated by the heavy, electric tension stretching between them.
"Nova," Julian’s deep voice cut through the silence, smooth as velvet and cold as steel. "Still playing with pencils while the house burns down around you?"
Nova straightened to her full height, resting her hands on the edge of the drafting table. "This isn't your house anymore, Julian. You abandoned it. What are you doing here?"
Julian casually unbuttoned his suit jacket and pulled a thick leather-bound folder from his leather briefcase, tossing it onto the table directly over her schematics.
"I'm here as the primary lien holder," Julian said, stepping closer until he was standing just inches from her side of the table. The subtle scent of cedarwood and rain filled the space between them. "I just bought out sixty percent of Vance Architectural’s debt. As of nine o'clock this morning, I am the majority shareholder."
Nova's breath hitched, though her expression remained an impenetrable mask. "You bought our debt."
"I bought the company," Julian corrected, leaning in slightly, his eyes holding hers in a vice grip. "And my first order of business as CEO is to prepare Vance Architectural for full asset liquidation."
Nova let out a sharp, breathless laugh, her eyes flashing with dangerous defiance. "Over my dead body."
"That can be arranged," Julian replied softly, his lips curving into a ruthless, faint smile. "Welcome to the takeover, little sister."
