The harsh, synthetic voice of the PA system echoed through the bustling arrival terminal of JFK Airport, but to Amelia Vance, it was nothing but static. She took a deep, shaky breath, letting the chaotic energy of New York City wash over her.

Five years.

It had been exactly five years since she had fled this city, leaving behind a shattered heart and a man who had broken it without a second thought.

"Mommy, are we at our new home yet?" a sweet, sleep-heavy voice tugged at her thoughts.

Amelia looked down, her lips curving into a soft, genuine smile. Her four-year-old daughter, Mia, was bundled up in a bright pink coat, clutching a worn-out stuffed bunny in one hand and Amelia’s trench coat in the other. Her large hazel eyes—a perfect mirror of Amelia's own—blinked heavily against the harsh fluorescent lights.

Amelia knelt, brushing a stray curl from Mia’s forehead. "Yes, sweetheart. We're here. Just a little further and we can finally rest."

"I don't like it. It's too loud," another small, distinctly flat voice chimed in.

Amelia turned to her son, Leo. Mia’s twin brother stood perfectly still, his tiny hand gripping the handle of his rolling suitcase with white-knuckled intensity. He wore a miniature black leather jacket, his brows furrowed in a deep, serious scowl that made him look far older than his four years.

Every time Amelia looked at Leo, a sharp, familiar ache pierced her chest. The sharp jawline, the rigid posture, and most terrifyingly... those piercing, intelligent, storm-grey eyes. He was a carbon copy of the man she had spent the last half-decade running from.

Alexander Blackwood.

Just the thought of his name sent a violent shiver down her spine. CEO of the Blackwood Empire. A billionaire who possessed the world at his fingertips, yet lacked a beating heart. Five years ago, Amelia had been foolish enough to believe she could melt the ice in his veins. Their contract marriage was supposed to be a temporary arrangement, a business deal. But she had broken the cardinal rule: she had fallen in love with her fake husband.

When she discovered she was pregnant, she thought it was a miracle. That was until she stood outside his study one rainy evening and heard him speaking to his lawyer on the phone.

"Amelia is a transaction, nothing more. I will never allow an heir, a liability, to tie me down. If she ever harbors illusions of a real family, I will personally ensure she leaves with absolutely nothing."

The memory still tasted like ash on her tongue. She had packed a single bag that night, signed the divorce papers he had left on his desk, and vanished without a trace, taking nothing of his money. Her dignity was the only thing she had left to salvage.

"Mommy? Why are you sad?" Leo’s small, warm hand touched her cheek, pulling her violently out of the past.

Amelia blinked away the sudden sting of tears and forced a bright, confident smile. She wasn't that weak, terrified girl anymore. She was a successful marketing director, a fierce single mother who had rebuilt her life from scratch in Europe. She had accepted this new executive position at Vertex Innovations in Manhattan because it was the opportunity of a lifetime for her children's future. New York was a city of eight million people. The chances of running into Alexander Blackwood were mathematically impossible.

"I'm perfectly fine, Leo," Amelia said, standing up and taking both of their small hands in hers. "Come on. Our taxi is waiting outside. This is our fresh start."

As the sliding glass doors parted, the biting November wind whipped across her face. The pavement was slick with recent rain, and the taxi line was overwhelmingly long. Amelia stepped toward the curb, instinctively pulling Leo and Mia behind her legs to shield them from the aggressive flow of passing cars. She raised her hand to flag down an empty yellow cab.

But fate had a cruel, twisted sense of humor.

A deafening roar of a V12 engine ripped through the air. A sleek, midnight-black Lamborghini Aventador swerved out of the VIP lane, moving at a reckless speed. It cut sharply toward the curb, tires screeching as it slammed on the brakes, stopping mere inches from Amelia’s knees.

"Ah!" Amelia gasped, stumbling backward. She instantly dropped to her knees, throwing her arms around Leo and Mia, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs as a protective fury ignited inside her.

"Are you insane?!" she screamed, surging to her feet. The fear instantly evaporated, replaced by the fierce wrath of a mother. She marched right up to the tinted passenger window. "You could have killed my children! Learn how to drive before you—"

The heavily tinted window began to roll down with a soft, mechanical hum.

The words died in Amelia’s throat. The air was forcefully punched out of her lungs.

Sitting in the back seat, dressed in an immaculate, custom-tailored charcoal suit, was a man who looked like he had stepped out of a dark, beautiful nightmare. His broad shoulders filled the space, his dark hair flawlessly styled, his chiseled jaw tightly clenched. He radiated power, dominance, and a cold, terrifying authority.

But it was his eyes that froze Amelia to the pavement.

Storm-grey. Cold. Calculating.

Alexander Blackwood.

He looked older, sharper, and far more dangerous than she remembered. Initially, his gaze held a look of sheer irritation at the woman yelling at his car. But as his eyes focused on Amelia’s face... the annoyance vanished, replaced by a shock so profound it seemed to physically jolt him.

Time stopped. The cacophony of the airport, the honking cars, the biting wind—it all faded into dead silence.

Alexander’s entire body went rigid. The knuckles of the hand gripping his phone turned stark white.

"Amelia..." His voice was barely a rasp, a deep, guttural sound that carried years of suppressed rage, disbelief, and something dangerously close to obsession.

Amelia’s legs threatened to give out. Her absolute worst nightmare had just materialized in the flesh. She hadn't been in the city for ten minutes, and she was staring into the eyes of the devil himself.

"Mommy, who is that scary man?" Leo’s clear, innocent voice cut through the heavy silence.

Leo stepped out from behind Amelia’s legs, moving directly into Alexander’s line of sight. He glared back at the billionaire in the car, his little arms crossed over his chest, mimicking the exact same dominant posture the man in the car possessed.

Amelia’s heart leaped into her throat. No. God, no.

Panic, raw and blinding, took over. She grabbed Leo and Mia by their collars, practically dragging them behind her as she lunged toward a yellow cab that had just pulled up behind the Lamborghini.

"Amelia! Stop right there!" Alexander roared from inside the car. The sound of his seatbelt unclicking echoed loudly.

She didn't look back. She shoved the kids into the backseat of the taxi, threw herself in after them, and slammed the door shut.

"Drive!" she screamed at the bewildered taxi driver. "Go! Now! Double the fare, just step on the gas!"

The taxi lurched forward, merging aggressively into the heavy airport traffic.

Trembling uncontrollably, Amelia turned to look out the rear window. Alexander had stepped out of his Lamborghini. He stood in the middle of the drop-off lane, uncaring of the blaring horns around him. His dark overcoat billowed in the wind, but he was completely still, his eyes locked onto her receding taxi with the terrifying intensity of an apex predator that had just located its prey.

She was back.

And the ruthless billionaire had just discovered she hadn't left alone.
