简介
【Hidden Identities + Substitute + Revenge and Punishing Scumbags + Groveling Ex-Husband】 For five years of marriage, Serena Caldwell let the upper-class circles call her a country bumpkin, a gold digger, and a pathetic simp. She thought that by giving him everything she had, she could make Ethan Mercer fall in love with her. That was until he brought his beloved first love before her and made her kneel and beg for forgiveness—or else he would divorce her. She finally came to her senses and gave the two shameless lovers a resounding slap. She divorced him without hesitation! Ethan Mercer thought she loved him deeply, that she would beg him, cling to him, stop at nothing, and never be able to leave him! But after the divorce, Serena Caldwell became dazzling and enjoyed boundless glory, while her hidden identities shocked the entire world. A top fashion designer, a miracle doctor, an agricultural genius… After the divorce, Serena Caldwell found herself with countless admirers. A younger, puppyish man went crazy for her. “Sis, please give me a chance to love you.” A powerful military figure was forceful and domineering. “I’ve set my sights on you, so you’re my wife.” A top celebrity publicly declared his love. “She is my light, illuminating the path ahead. If you love me, you have to love her too.” Meanwhile, her ex-husband had fallen in love with Serena Caldwell without even realizing it. He pursued her relentlessly, using every means at his disposal. “Serena Caldwell I love you. I’m willing to give you everything.” When Serena Caldwell returned to his side, he thought she had forgiven him and fallen in love with him again… Later, the corners of his eyes bloodshot, he placed the knife in Serena Caldwell’s hand and pressed it against his own chest. “Tell me, do you love this heart, or do you love me?”

Red wine was poured straight over Serena Caldwell’s head. Her long black hair clung messily to her pale cheeks as she knelt on a floor littered with shattered glass. Blood mixed with the wine, the bright red on the ground harsh enough to sting the eyes.

Around her, the insults just kept coming, ugly and nonstop.

"Look at this country bumpkin. She marries Mr. Mercer and really thinks she’s the lady of the house now? Has she even looked in a mirror? Does she seriously think she’s worthy?"

"That spot should’ve belonged to Miss Caldwell from the start. If you’re gonna be a bootlicker, at least stay in your lane. This punishment is already going easy on her. She totally asked for it."

"She actually thought Ethan Mercer would fall for someone like her? And she even dared hurt and provoke Miss Caldwell? She’s got a death wish or what..."

"What kind of tricks did she use to make Mr. Mercer force Mr. Mercer to marry her? Gotta admit, her methods were next level..."

"Mr. Mercer told her to kneel and she dropped right down. The way she acts so cheap is honestly disgusting."

The crowd’s mockery came sharp and mean, but beneath it, some of the women clearly couldn’t hide their jealousy either. Why should a nobody like Serena get to become Mrs. Mercer?

The broken glass dug into her knees, and the pain made Serena’s body tremble ever so slightly.

But none of that hurt as much as the man’s cold words.

"You disgust me more than a lapdog."

That one sentence cut straight through her heart.

She kept staring at the man holding another woman in his arms, not blinking once.

Ethan Mercer stood there in black slacks and a white shirt, the top buttons undone just enough to show the clean line of his collarbone. His features were sharp, his gaze deep and severe, and his whole presence carried that dangerous, grown-man edge that made people instinctively back off.

Too bad the way he looked at her held nothing but disgust and indifference.

"Drink all of these, and I’ll let this go. Otherwise, I won’t forget that you hurt Vanessa," Ethan said, his voice icy.

On the table sat more than a dozen glasses, some filled with liquor, some with red wine.

"Ethan, no matter what, she’s still your wife. This is a bit much. The glass only left me with a tiny cut. It’s really nothing serious..."

Vanessa Caldwell spoke in a soft, aggrieved tone from his arms, like she was trying to defend Serena. But when her eyes met Serena’s, the challenge in them was completely undisguised.

To her, Serena was just some dirt-poor nobody. So what if she had become Ethan Mercer’s wife? Vanessa never took her seriously.

No matter when, as long as she made the slightest move toward him, Ethan would come right back.

If she hadn’t gone abroad for five years, how could this shameless woman have stolen her place?

"I’m standing up for you." Ethan Mercer’s voice was cool and flat, almost empty of emotion.

Just one hard sentence, leaving no room to argue, and making it crystal clear he was backing Vanessa Caldwell.

Did he really think he couldn’t see through Serena Caldwell? He’d warned her on their wedding day already: don’t play games with him. If she wanted to stay, then be Mrs. Mercer properly. If not, get out.

Maybe he’d been too lenient with her lately. So lenient that she’d started pushing her luck, even daring to hurt Vanessa.

"Heh..." Serena let out a soft laugh. The curve of her lips was full of mockery, but the light in her eyes faded bit by bit until there was nothing left except bottomless sorrow.

In the end, she was the one who’d been wrong. Wrong in the most ridiculous way.

Five whole years. Everything she had given, all of it, still meant less than the woman who had thrown him away and left.

So the so-called white moonlight really was every man’s soft spot.

It was obviously Vanessa who had deliberately loosened her grip on the cup Serena passed over. It smashed onto the floor, and the flying glass just happened to cut her leg. Yet somehow, that turned Serena into the scheming villain who wanted to hurt his precious white moonlight.

The one who is loved will always be favored. The one who isn’t loved is just tragic, plain and simple.

She had given with all her heart, and in the end, she still lost. She could not make him fall for her.

He was Ethan Mercer.

Not her Ayan.

Just a stranger carrying Ayan’s heart. No matter how much she gave, that heart was no longer Ayan’s. It would never beat for her again.

Her Ayan would never have made her hurt like this, let alone wound her with his own hands.

He would always, always have protected her first.

But Ayan had been dead for a long time.

She had been living like a walking corpse, and she should have snapped out of this fantasy ages ago.

At last, she understood.

What she wanted was to protect Ayan’s heart, not keep treating Ethan like Ayan and trampling herself into the dirt.

"I’m not drinking."

Serena Caldwell braced one hand on the table and slowly pushed herself up from the floor. When she spoke, her voice was rough and hoarse, but every word landed in the room like a stone dropped into still water.

The fantasy was over.

She was finally awake.

She was still running a fever. She had taken cephalosporin earlier, and her head was still foggy, heavy, like it was stuffed with cotton. She knew exactly what it meant to drink all that alcohol in this state. If she did, she might just die on the spot and go straight underground to see Yan.

But she had promised Yan she would live well.

Everyone stared at Serena in shock. No one had expected her to refuse Ethan Mercer's order.

Who in Jiangcheng didn't know Serena was a gold-digging simp?

Whatever Ethan told her to do, she would do it. Honestly, if he told her to eat dirt, people figured she'd probably do that too. A woman everyone looked down on, someone they thought had no bottom line, was suddenly pushing back. How could that not leave people stunned?

This was the first time Serena had ever said no to him.

A flicker of surprise crossed Ethan's face, gone in a second, replaced by naked mockery.

Couldn't take it anymore?

She kept saying she loved him, said she'd do anything for him. And now it was just a few bottles of liquor, and she already dared to embarrass him in public?

So this was still about money in the end. She just couldn't bear to leave him.

Ethan let out a cold laugh. "Fine. Don't drink, then. Divorce me. Leave with nothing."

He set the woman in his arms down, then strode toward Serena on those long legs of his, stopping right in front of her and looking down at her from above.

Serena was five foot six, which wasn't short at all, but in front of Ethan, who stood over six foot two, she looked almost fragile.

Today, if she didn't drink, she'd still have to drink.

Unless she actually dared to divorce him.

But Ethan was sure she wouldn't. She couldn't leave him, and even more than that, she couldn't walk away from the insane wealth that came with being Mrs. Mercer.

The others immediately piled on, laughing like they'd just heard the best joke of the night.

"Leave with nothing? You think a gold digger like her would agree to that?"

"She finally clawed her way into money, and now she's supposed to crawl back to the slums? Can she even handle that? Hahaha..."

Sprawled on the leather sofa, Spencer Dalton gave a mocking snort. "She finally managed to latch onto a golden husband, and not just any guy, but Jiangcheng's walking god of wealth. If Serena really agrees to divorce and leave with nothing, I'll livestream myself eating crap."

He had seen too many poor girls claw their way upward by any means necessary, and he had always hated the fact that Serena had married Ethan.

Serena lowered her eyes. His brown eyes were dark, unfathomable, like a bottomless pit, and she didn't dare meet them head-on. Still, she forced herself to speak, each word clear and steady.

"Okay. Divorce."

Ethan's pupils shrank sharply.

"What game are you playing?" he snapped, shock flashing across his face at how easily she agreed. "Playing hard to get?"

Everyone else in the room was stunned too.

She actually agreed?

Serena Caldwell was really willing to divorce Ethan Mercer—and leave with absolutely nothing?

Everyone knew Ethan Mercer was absurdly rich, the kind of tycoon in Jiangcheng worth hundreds of billions. Who wouldn’t try to get on his good side?

Forget becoming his lover—even a one-night stand with him was enough to make countless women lose their minds and line up.

Because the second someone got tied to him, even if he didn’t hand over a single cent, the connections around him alone were enough to bring deals, resources, and benefits most people couldn’t even dream of.

So was Serena Caldwell out of her mind for agreeing to a divorce?

Or was she playing some deeper game?

Almost everyone there believed it had to be the second one. Serena had to be plotting something.

“Divorce. Tomorrow, nine a.m., Civil Affairs Bureau,” Serena said cleanly, every word crisp and final.

She didn’t want to keep dragging this out for one more second. After saying it, she turned and walked away.

But Vanessa Caldwell had no intention of letting her leave that easily.

No way.

She wanted Serena to become a complete joke, the kind people laughed about long after tonight was over.

Vanessa hurried after her, reached out, and grabbed Serena’s wrist. Her face instantly switched to a guilty, pitiful look, like she’d been wronged too.

“Serena, you’re Ethan’s wife. Ethan and I are impossible now. You two are already married, and I would never interfere in your marriage.”

Her voice trembled just enough to sound sincere.

“Today was my fault. I shouldn’t have asked Ethan to come to Shengshi for my birthday. I’m the one who made things worse and pushed you two into talking about divorce…”

But the next second, she leaned in and lowered her voice so only Serena could hear.

The softness in her eyes vanished on the spot, replaced by naked mockery and venom.

“You little bastard with a dead mom, crawl back to wherever you came from. You really thought you could steal my man? Please. You’re not even worthy of one of my fingers.”

Then, with a vicious curl of her lips, she hissed,

“Stay the hell away from me. Otherwise, I’ll make you a level-ten cripple.”
