简介
"You're mine now." He said it was a victory. Like I was the final trophy in a war he'd been waging my whole life. Elliot Vance didn't marry me for love. He married me for revenge. My family's empire was destroyed by his hand. To save them, I signed a contract that made me his wife. Now I live in his cold, steel-and-glass world, surrounded by his hatred and the echoes of a past I don't understand. He wants me to break. To be a symbol of his triumph. But I am not my family's sins. And as his icy control begins to crack, I'm starting to see the man behind the monster. But the closer I get to the truth, the more dangerous my life becomes. A conspiracy that began decades ago is far from over... and someone wants to make sure I never uncover it.

"No. That's not possible."

Bianca Sterling paused halfway down the staircase.

Her father's voice drifted from the study below, low and strained. Richard Sterling rarely brought work home, especially this late.

"Give me one more week."

Silence.

"I don't care what the banks are saying."

Bianca glanced at the grandfather clock.

11:42 p.m.

She tightened her grip on the hospital folder tucked beneath her arm. Inside were the approval forms for her mother's next treatment at St. Catherine's Medical Center.

She had just returned from the hospital. Her mother had already fallen asleep.

"You think I don't know what's happening?"

Her father's voice dropped.

"No. Don't say that name over the phone."

A knot formed in Bianca's stomach.

Richard Sterling had built Sterling Holdings into one of New York's most respected companies. Through every challenge, he had always remained calm.

Tonight, he sounded like a man with nowhere left to turn.

She took another step.

The old floor creaked.

The conversation stopped.

A chair scraped across the floor.

Before the study door opened, Bianca continued toward the kitchen as though she hadn't heard a thing.

"Bianca?"

She turned.

"Dad."

Richard stood in the doorway, his tie loosened and his sleeves rolled to his elbows. Dark circles framed his eyes.

"What are you doing awake?"

"I was about to ask you the same thing."

"Just finishing some work."

"You promised Mom you wouldn't bring work home."

His jaw tightened.

"I know."

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

"How's your mother?" he asked.

"She slept through most of the evening."

"And the doctors?"

"They're hopeful."

The lie slipped out before she could stop it.

The doctor hadn't said hope.

He had said stable.

Even that depended on how much longer they could afford the treatments.

Bianca had stopped asking how much each treatment cost.

She didn't want to see the numbers anymore.

All that mattered was keeping her mother alive long enough for the next appointment, the next scan, the next piece of good news they kept hoping would come.

"You should get some sleep," Richard said.

Bianca searched his face.

"You look like you need it more."

"I'm fine."

He'd been saying that for weeks.

Each time, it sounded less convincing.

"I was making tea. Want a cup?"

"I'll get it myself."

"I don't mind."

"No."

The answer came too sharply.

He drew a slow breath.

"I mean... I'll take care of it."

Bianca nodded, but the uneasiness remained.

"Is everything okay at Sterling Holdings?"

Richard held her gaze.

"We'll be fine."

"You've been saying that for days."

"Because it's true."

His phone buzzed.

He glanced at the screen.

The color drained from his face.

Without a word, he locked the phone and slipped it into his pocket.

Even then, Bianca noticed the slight tremor in his hand.

"I still think you should rest."

"I have a few things to finish."

He forced a smile.

"Good night."

"Good night, Dad."

She headed toward the kitchen.

Behind her

Click.

She stopped.

The study door was locked.

Her father had never locked that room before.

The kettle whistled as Bianca filled two mugs with hot water.

She stared at the second cup before pouring it back into the kettle.

Her father wasn't coming out.

Cradling the remaining mug in both hands, she leaned against the kitchen island.

The mansion felt different tonight.

Most of the lights were off, and the silence no longer felt comforting.

Over the past few months, members of the staff had quietly left one after another. Everyone said they had retired.

She wasn't sure she believed it anymore.

She opened the refrigerator.

Cold air brushed her face.

The shelves were nearly empty.

Yesterday they had been stocked with fresh food.

Tonight, only leftovers and a few bottles of water remained.

The kitchen had always reflected her father's success. He believed no one under his roof should ever worry about the basics.

For the first time, Bianca wondered if the changes around the house weren't accidents at all.

"When did this happen?"

"Miss Bianca?"

She turned to find the housekeeper standing near the pantry with folded towels in her arms.

"I'm sorry," Bianca said. "I didn't hear you."

"You should be asleep."

Bianca managed a faint smile.

"So should everyone else."

The housekeeper glanced toward the hallway before lowering her voice.

"Your father has been meeting with lawyers."

Bianca frowned.

"That's not unusual."

"They don't come during the day."

She stepped closer.

"They arrive after midnight... and leave through the back entrance."

"Why?"

The housekeeper hesitated.

"I'm afraid I've already said too much."

Before Bianca could ask another question, she hurried out of the kitchen.

Bianca looked down at the untouched tea.

The late-night phone call.

The locked study.

The nearly empty refrigerator.

Now secret meetings with lawyers.

None of it added up.

She set the mug aside and walked upstairs.

Outside her bedroom, Bianca stopped.

A thin strip of light still shone beneath the study door below.

Her father was still awake.

She rested her hand on the doorknob.

Maybe she was letting her imagination run wild.

Maybe the company was handling a difficult negotiation.

Maybe tomorrow morning everything would make sense.

She turned the handle.

The bedroom door opened.

She looked into the dark room.

Sleep was the sensible choice.

Instead, she quietly closed the door again.

The questions she had been pushing aside refused to leave her alone.

She slipped back toward the staircase, careful not to make a sound.

From the landing, she could see part of the hallway below.

The study door remained shut.

She waited.

A few seconds later, another voice reached her.

A man's voice.

Bianca frowned.

She hadn't heard anyone arrive.

No car.

No footsteps.

No knock at the front door.

"...there's still time to protect the assets."

"No."

Her father's reply came without hesitation.

"They're already freezing everything."

"There are other options."

"I said no."

Silence stretched between them.

Then the stranger spoke again.

"If Vance finds out..."

Bianca searched her memory.

Vance.

The name meant nothing to her.

The rest of the sentence was too quiet to hear.

She leaned forward, trying to catch another word.

Nothing.

Several moments passed before Richard spoke again.

His voice was calm, but edged with determination.

"I won't let Elliot Vance tear this family apart."

Elliot Vance.

The name settled heavily in Bianca's mind.

She had never heard it before tonight.

Yet her father spoke it as though one man held the future of the Sterling family in his hands.

Who was Elliot Vance?

A rival?

A creditor?

Someone waiting for Sterling Holdings to collapse?

Her thoughts broke apart as her foot shifted.

The old staircase answered with a faint creak.

The conversation inside stopped.

A chair scraped across the floor.

Someone stood.

Slow, measured footsteps crossed the room.

One after another.

Toward the door.

Bianca's fingers tightened around the banister.

Every instinct told her to run.

She couldn't move.

The brass doorknob turned.

The latch clicked.

The study door began to open.
