Part I: The Alpha’s Shadow
Chapter 1: The Night the Pack
The forest was too quiet.
Jakob Sterling stood barefoot on damp earth, the cold biting into his skin, grounding him in a reality he still couldn’t accept. The air smelled of pine, blood, and something hollow—something final.
They had laid his father on the pyre at the center of the clearing.
No chants. No howls.
Just silence.
“Light it.”
The words came from him, but they didn’t feel like his.
A torch was placed into his hand. It trembled—just slightly. Not enough for anyone to call it a weakness. But enough for him to know.
I’m not ready.
Across the clearing, his mother stood rigid, her chin lifted, her expression carved from stone. Not a tear. Not a flicker. Just expectation.
Jakob stepped forward.
Every step felt heavier than the last.
His father had always seemed… immovable. Larger than life. The kind of Alpha who didn’t die suddenly in the woods under mysterious circumstances.
The kind of Alpha who didn’t leave his son unprepared.
Jakob lowered the torch.
Flames caught quickly, devouring dry wood, licking upward like hungry tongues. Heat surged against his face.
And just like that—his father was gone.
A murmur rippled through the pack behind him.
Not grief.
Uncertainty.
Fear.
Jakob turned.
Dozens of eyes locked onto him. Waiting. Measuring.
Judging.
He felt it settle on his shoulders like a physical weight.
Alpha.
The word no longer felt like a future.
It was a sentence.
Chapter 2: A Crown You Don’t Refuse
“You will name a Luna within the month.”
Jakob didn’t look up from the glass in his hand.
Amber liquid swirled as he tilted it lazily, watching it catch the dim light of his father’s study—his study now.
“That’s fast,” he muttered.
“It’s necessary.”
His mother didn’t sit. She never did when she wanted control of a room.
“A pack without a Luna is unstable. Vulnerable. You know this.”
“I also know my father hasn’t been dead for a week.”
Her gaze sharpened.
“And yet the world does not pause for your grief.”
That hit.
Harder than it should have been.
Jakob set the glass down with a quiet clink. “What exactly are you suggesting?”
A pause.
Then—
“Ciara Billings has returned.”
That name.
It landed like a memory he hadn’t opened in years.
Jakob finally looked at her.
“She came back?”
“She never truly left,” his mother said smoothly. “She simply waited.”
“For what?”
“For you.”
Something twisted in his chest—unexpected, unwelcome.
Ciara.
Golden laughter. Soft hands. The girl who had known him before responsibility hardened him into something else.
“She would make an ideal Luna,” his mother continued. “She knows the pack. She understands our traditions. She understands you.”
Jakob leaned back in his chair, studying her.
“This isn’t about compatibility,” he said quietly. “It’s about control.”
A flicker of irritation crossed her face.
“It’s about survival.”
