Prologue

Long ago, Arielle and Kael were bound by an ancient blood oath. Their love became so powerful that it threatened the balance between two kingdoms. An ancient prophecy declared that if they remained together, one of them would eventually destroy the other.

So they made the impossible choice:

Break the bond.

The ritual works.

Mostly.

Their memories of each other disappear.

Their names vanish from their minds.

Their shared childhood disappears.

Their first kiss disappears.

Their promises disappear.

But the bond itself doesn't completely die.

Instead, it becomes something neither of them understands.

A phantom pain.

Chapter One — The Stranger Who Hurt

Arielle woke screaming.

Her hand was pressed against her chest.

Something was wrong.

Not physically.

Not exactly.

It felt as though someone had reached inside her and pulled something apart.

She gasped and sat upright.

"Again," she whispered.

It had been happening for three months.

Every night at exactly the same time.

The pain.

The inexplicable grief.

And the dream.

Always the same dream.

A man standing beneath a dead tree.

She could never see his face.

But somehow, every time she woke, she missed him.

She didn't know who he was.

She didn't know why she loved him.

Because she was certain of one thing.

She had loved him.

Or perhaps some broken part of her still did.

Thirty miles away, across the kingdom, Kael woke at precisely the same moment.

His eyes flew open.

His hand clutched his chest.

"Who are you?" he whispered into the darkness.

He didn't know why he'd said it.

He didn't know who he was talking to.

But somewhere inside him, something answered.

You promised you'd find me.

Kael froze.

He hadn't heard the voice aloud.

It had come from inside his own mind.

And then, for the first time in years, he began to cry.

He had no idea who he was mourning.

The First Encounter

Weeks later, Arielle entered the royal archives searching for an explanation.

Kael was there.

Neither recognized the other.

They passed each other without a word.

Then Arielle suddenly stopped.

Her heart slammed against her ribs.

Kael stopped too.

They turned simultaneously.

Their eyes met.

And both of them felt it.

Pain.

Not attraction.

Not recognition.

Pain.

Arielle staggered backward.

Kael grabbed the edge of a table to steady himself.

"What is happening?" she whispered.

"I don't know."

They stared at one another.

Then Kael noticed something around her neck.

A tiny silver pendant.

A symbol he had never seen before.

Except—

His fingers instinctively moved toward his own chest.

Under his shirt was an identical symbol.

Arielle touched hers.

Neither spoke.

And somewhere deep beneath the magic that had erased their memories, something ancient stirred.

Because the bond had recognized them.

Even if they hadn't recognized themselves.

And the cruelest part?

Eventually, they begin falling in love again.

Without knowing they already had.

Without knowing their first love ended in catastrophe.

Without knowing the mysterious pain they both carry is actually the scar left behind when fate tore them apart.

Until one of them discovers the truth:

They weren't destined to fall in love.

They had already done it.

And fate had already broken them once.

This time, it intends to finish the job.
