It was a sunny afternoon. The breeze blew so gently and slowly. The atmosphere of the park was calm and quiet. You could hear the soft tweeting of the birds.
They sat down there for what seems like an eternity. The man was looking intently at her while the young lady was just nervously tapping her fingers on the table.
Is this lady for real?
For the past week, she had been stalking him asking for a moment of his time. At first, he thought it was another crazy girl just trying to get his attention but, hell no! This woman is a stalker. And now he’d decided to give her a listening ear, she just sat down there and went mute.
"Excuse me, Miss, but..."
"I’m pregnant," she cut him off.
It sounded like a whisper. If the atmosphere wasn't calm and quiet, maybe he wouldn't have heard what she said.
"Am sorry you are what?" he asked, this time leaning a little closer.
"Pregnant," she repeated, this time a little louder.
All this while she wasn't looking up.
Is this lady okay? Why was she telling him this?
"And so what if you are pregnant? What does that have anything to do..."
"It’s yours," she cut him off again.
He looked at her and burst out laughing.
This time she raised her head. Guess she was wondering what was funny.
"I’m sorry, but I don't think I understand what you are saying."
"I said I am pregnant with your baby."
He wasn't laughing anymore. Is this some kind of joke or what?!
"You are saying I got you pregnant?"
"Yes and am two weeks gone"
Somebody wake me up. This is a dream. No, in fact, this is a nightmare.
"Woman, how much do you want?"
"I’m sorry, what?"
"Look, I have seen these things before. Maybe someone paid you to come here and tarnish my image or maybe you are just one of those girls that are gold diggers looking for who to extract money from. So tell me how much you want. Let's not waste our time here. I am a busy man, in case you didn’t know."
****
Is this jerk for real?
"How dare you call me a gold digger! You think I am happy with this pregnancy? Hell no! I would have opted for an abortion but no my conscience won't let me. If only you know what this pregnancy will do to my life. You think it's a good thing for a lady to get pregnant out of wedlock, especially to a stranger?"
"Exactly my point," the man cut her off.
"A stranger. I don't even know you. I haven't seen you before so how do you expect me to believe I am responsible for that pregnancy?"
"Well, if you didn't have a weak memory you would have remembered the one night stand you had with a lady a month ago at the Get Down Club.”
****
He looked at her while trying to remember. But all to no avail. He had many girls at his beck and call so there was no way he was going to remember a one night stand with a random girl.
"Okay, let's just say I did have sex with you. I make sure I use a condom whenever I have sex."
"Well, I don't know. Maybe it tore," she said, trying to look for an explanation.
He looked at her and sighed.
"So what do you want from me?"
"I was waiting for that question. I just need you to take responsibility for this pregnancy in the next nine months. I don't have a job now and I don't have money to take care of myself and the baby. After the nine months, I promise to take my baby and disappear from your life."
He looked at her, trying to think.
"I want a DNA test," he said suddenly.
"What! Why?"
"What do you mean by why? I’m still not convinced that pregnancy is mine. So I want a DNA test. Only then can I decide what to do next."
"Alright," she said. "If that will make you believe me, am ready"
He brought out his phone.
"Here, put your number in here. I will text you when I’m ready"
She collected the phone and dialled her number.
"So what should I do before that time?"
"I don't know. You aren't a kid anymore. Sort yourself out. Am not helping you until I am sure that pregnancy is mine."
He stood up. "Good day, Miss. Till we meet again"
He entered his car and drove off.
****
Wow.
Is this guy for real? How the heck did I get pregnant for a jerk like him?
"He's handsome, though," she admitted.
She heaved a sigh of relief. She decided to ask for his help because she didn't want to burden her mother. She was thankful that she didn't even throw her out of the house.
She looked at her stomach, touched it and smiled.
"Your father may be a jerk but don't worry, I will do anything for you. I will give birth to you and take care of you."
It was getting late already. She stood up, picked her purse and trudged back home.
Two days later
Ken POV
I dropped onto my bed with a tired sigh. Gosh, today was so hectic at the office. I had too many clients to attend to, coupled with the 100 billion dollar contract I am pursuing.
"I need a break. Yeah, something like a vacation."
I picked up my phone to check my emails and then I remembered the pregnant lady.
I was supposed to text her.
Gosh, I wish this was all a dream. I don't want to be a father now. I mean I still have my life ahead of me.
Still have a lot to achieve and being a father to a child isn't on the list.
What if she's lying. In fact, I know she's lying. That pregnancy can't be mine. I am always careful when it comes to this kind of stuff.
"Then take a DNA test," my inner mind said to me.
While a part of me was saying she's lying, another part of me was saying she may be saying the truth.
I sighed.
"Let's get this over and done with," I said as I picked up my phone.
Lisa POV
Gosh, it's two weeks already and no calls or texts from Mr. Ken. I thought he said he wants to have a DNA test, so why the heck is he delaying?
I picked up my phone one more time but I didn't see anything.
I was getting angry and impatient already. I hope this man hasn't run away because I promise I am going to find him.
I was engrossed in my thoughts that I didn't hear my mom come into my room.
"Lis, are you okay?" she asked as she sat near me.
She calls me Lis for short.
"Yeah, mom. Just waiting for him to text."
"You know I don't mind taking care of you till you put to bed. After all, I am your mother"
"I know, Mom. But it's already hard for you and I don't want to burden you with my mistake."
"Don't call your child a mistake. I know you made a reckless mistake but that doesn't mean your child is a mistake. Instead, see it as a gift from God."
"Okay, mom I have heard. Anyways he needs to take responsibility, too. He's the father, after all."
Just then I heard a peep from my phone.
I checked and it was from an unknown number. I opened it and there it was, the message I was waiting for.
"Meet me at the park tomorrow at 8am, I will take you to the hospital where we will get the DNA test done," it read.
I scoffed. Not even a, "How are you? How is the baby doing?" I wonder the kind of father he is going to be to my child.
"Is that him?" my mother asked.
"Yes. I’m meeting him tomorrow at 8am."
"Okay. Don't worry everything will be fine, dear."
"It better be," I said softly as I wondered what the future holds for me and my unborn child.
